And the newspapers still don't seem to have investigated any possible links that Savile had with Haut de la Garenne or have discovered why Savile was given keys at Broadmoor and why he was appointed to such important roles, when his experience as a yodelling DJ in a shiny tracksuit is not the normal qualification for such jobs.

The News of the World did expose the picture of Savile at Haut de la Garenne many years ago. But the News of the World is now gone. Will any other investigative journalists follow these things up?

babyboomersrock · 23/11/2012 16:57

Worse, the Guardian writer isn't a journalist. Here she is - former social worker, now a professor at Edinburgh.

comparing the actual sexual abuse of children to fogies being disturbed by mods? nice. anything to get your name in the paper i guess.

babyboomersrock · 23/11/2012 17:13

I see her department was awarded nearly £18k earlier in the year to "revisit moral panics in the 21st century" (to paraphrase). You'll find her award mentioned half way down the page.

telling

babyboomersrock · 23/11/2012 18:04

I find this sort of thing patronising - Professor Cree writes:

"By focusing on Jimmy Savile, we lose sight of the millions of children across the world who die each year for lack of clean water and the tens of thousands of children in the UK who grow up suffering from hardship and neglect. The explosive incident will always get more attention than the duller, more complex bigger picture. And when we let that happen, everyone loses."

Er, no I don't lose sight of all that, actually. I'm quite capable of keeping several issues in my head at the same time.

I'm concerned that there is no cover-up of a potential paedophile ring here in the UK, where powerful people are given protection and their victims, as always, are left defenceless and unbelieved - while also being concerned about children dying of thirst and starvation, and children being beaten and neglected.

LineRunner · 23/11/2012 18:09

Yes, it's the same old bollocks about how we normal human beings, unlike the superior ones, can only care about one scandal at a time.

hackmum · 23/11/2012 18:18

It's as inevitable as night follows day - something terrible happens, a lot of people say "ooh, that's terrible", and a sociologist pops up to say it's a "moral panic".

You know what? I haven't seen anyone panicking about the Savile case. I've heard a lot of people express shock that he was allowed by so many people, for so long, to get away with such terrible things. If that's moral panic, then my name's Clive Dunn.

swallowedAfly · 23/11/2012 18:50

in any case who says being outraged and shocked and horrified by outrageous, shocking and horrifying events is a problem anyway? Confused

do f off ms academic, paid per word, twat.

Mrcrumpswife · 23/11/2012 19:13

Having read this, i now feel defeated. I saw it on DI and wouldnt recommend reading if you are faint hearted because it will infuriate you when you recognise how they covered it all up. So much of it could be referring to whats happening here, its scary.

These are all very recent cases (20 years) in the 6 parts. The establishment appears to use the same tried and tested methods in each part of the world. The Belgium case is unbelievable yet all documented with facts from mainstream media even though they admit to only knowing a fraction of what happened.

Hope the link works.

This is the reason we have to keep asking questionsSad

AnyaKnowIt · 23/11/2012 20:17

Mrcrump - Just started reading that link Sad

AnyaKnowIt · 23/11/2012 20:28

Oh look Paul McCartney jumping on the bandwagon

NigellasGuest · 23/11/2012 20:54

started reading link but really couldn't go there.
Feeling defeated too.
What now? Sad

Mrcrumpswife · 23/11/2012 21:21

I have absolutely no idea where to go from here eitherSad

Its all so totally fucked up.

As for Paul McCartneyEnvy=me being sick not envious...shudders.....

Lockedout434 · 23/11/2012 21:26

Just read the link it's a sorry thing to say but I couldn't see 300,000 English people going on a general strike due to child abuse in government .
Most of the fuckers would say tut tut it's moral panic .
I was thinking we need a comedian to start a routine about it. Something of a mark thomas or a mark steel a campaigning one who could get over the horror and keep it in people's minds.
Saying that jerry sadovitch did a huge sketch on saville and it didn't make much of a ripple till after the fact.

God what happened to the 17 year old rapist to do something like that.

claig · 23/11/2012 23:14

The BBC made a very good documentary about the Dutroux case. It was by Olenka Frenkiel and was called Belgium's X Files. I think it is on youtube.

Lockedout434 · 24/11/2012 00:25

I remember the Dutroux case. I read about it noted the uk mep connection felt some consternation and then turned the page.

I don't want this to happen here. I want something done.
MP maybe but it's so apathetic.

This is written with to much detail salacious even.

Hummingbirds · 24/11/2012 00:48

Mrcrumpswife -- thank you for that link. It certainly makes for grim reading, but truly enlightening for anyone hoping to understand what's been going on.

One thing revealed is the truly shocking collusion/incompetence of large sections of the press. As usual, it is the local papers who are the honourable exception.

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2237170/Why-Amsterdams-legal-brothels-lesson-Britain-telling-truth-sex-gangs-race.html

Weird headline as its hardly a feminist stance to go into prostitution but as per daily mail they have to blame the women somehow.
The article is the opposite though

Mrcrumpswife · 24/11/2012 08:34

Unbelieveable. I thought he would have been struck off by now. The secret family courts have to stop, the only people who it protects are the dodgy SW and those making huge amounts of money by fitting in with whatever agenda is required by local authorities. Nobody should have the incentive of financial gain by removing children and placing them in a system that frequently fails.

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2237637/Why-doctor-George-Hibbert-GMC-probe-STILL-allowed-break-families.html

At least the DM are gently asking questions about Cyril Smith. I would much rather they did some proper journalism and attacked this subject like a rabid dog.

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2237627/Cyril-Smith-child-abuse-Chilling-claims-Smith-child-abuse-scandal-concealed-avoid-crisis-Westminster.html

I'm going to try and find the Belgium X files on you tube.

Lockedout434 · 24/11/2012 08:47

Hi my illusions have been shattered about basil hulme it appears to cardinal newman was the one buried with his bessie mate.

Hume was accused in 'hushing up' a suspected sexual abuse scandal at Ampleforth College by not calling in the police when he received a complaint from parents in 1975 about Father Piers Grant-Ferris, the son of a Tory peer at Gilling Castle, formerly a prep school for Ampleforth. In 2005, Grant-Ferris admitted 20 incidents of child abuse. This was not an isolated incident and involved other monks and lay members. The Yorkshire Post reported in 2005; "Pupils at a leading Roman Catholic school suffered decades of abuse from at least six paedophiles following a decision by former Abbot Basil Hume not to call in police at the beginning of the scandal." [16]

One of my bosses went to ampleforth and was shocked about thoses revelations. He mentioned the case as he said nothing ever went on that he knew about. I never took much notice.

The more I look into my past the more I realise how blind and accepting I was about horrible things that past before my eyes, either in newspapers, tv reports and conversations. I am quite political aswell .

Forgot to paste the link.

In reading about cardinal Newman he actually had a trial as he libelled a priest for child abuse and adulatory. He lost of course as no one believed the witnesses.
