To question the jail sentence for the mum who stabbed her 4 year old?

There's such a sad story of a mum who stabbed her 4 year old daughter in the news at the moment.www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/crime/9510938/Nurse-who-stabbed-her-four-year-old-to-death-gets-12-years.html.
She looks like such a broken woman. She not only killed her daughter but also tried to kill herself leaving herself with some brain damage and confined to a wheel chair with other physical disabilities. At the time of the attack she was depressed and facing charges for malpractice and had been left by her partner that day.
She has just been sentenced to 12 years in jail. Do you think she should be jailed? I can't help help but feel she's suffered so much already. Am I unreasonable?

YANBU. Even the prosecution recognised that she was mentally disturbed. Some people appear to think that she did it in a cold and calculating way, but after killing her daughter she drank antifreeze and is now confined to a wheelchair. Difficult to see how that is the act of a rational mind.

I'm not sure what purpose people think is being served by the jail sentence.

Anyone who can callously stab a four year old child to death deserves everything they get. Depression is no excuse. I bet if she was a man you would have little sympathy for her.

BlackberryIce · 31/08/2012 14:23

Well she isn't 'mentally ill'

2rebecca · 31/08/2012 14:24

If a father had stabbed his daughter and used the excuse of his partner leaving him people wouldn't be questioning the sentence and would be feeling sorry for the poor mother.
I feel sorry for the father and grandparents here.
Fine kill yourself but leave your kids alone.

Callisto · 31/08/2012 14:24

The purpose of the sentence is to punish this woman for the crime she committed and to show to others that it is wrong to do such things.

Nancy66 · 31/08/2012 14:25

I have no problem with the sentence.

BlackberryIce · 31/08/2012 14:25

Hogan did similar. Jumping off the balcony

Mrbojangles1 · 31/08/2012 14:26

Why is it when any women commits a crime we should feel bad and sorry

I think this sudden bout of depessio was dremt by by her legal team very convinet to be suffering with depression when your facing life in jail

I wonder if she was depressed when she was passing on files from the gos to her them bf or when she left her daughter to die a slow painful death

I hope this women nothing but misery

When women commit crimes their go to defence seems to be either the man made me or depression

missymoomoomee · 31/08/2012 14:26

It wasn't harsh enough imo. It makes me feel physically sick to think of that poor wee tootie being murdered in such a horrific way by the person who is supposed to love her more than anything else in the world. My sympathies lie with her daughter, the father, and everyone else who loved that little girl, not this murderer.

solidgoldbrass · 31/08/2012 14:27

I think 12 years is a fair sentence for manslaughter.

CrispyCod · 31/08/2012 14:27

I wasn't in that women's head when she did it therefore am in no place to comment on her reasons or thinking.

I'm sure those that gave her the sentence were in a better position and armed with more relevant information in order to pass the judgement they did.

StaceymReadyForNumber3 · 31/08/2012 14:28

If she was that disturbed would she have been allowed to stand trial

Even if disturbed she should be held accountable for her actions. A very sad story.

And I agree I think many peoria would have a different stance if it was the father who had commuted thus heinous crime.

How bloody sad Sad

Don't even know what to think to be honest.

Mrbojangles1 · 31/08/2012 14:29

hackmum did she drink the anti freeze because she was depressed or because she couldnt face the punsihment ?

expatinscotland · 31/08/2012 14:30

this man was convicted of manslaughter rather than murder in the stabbing deaths of his wife, his FIL, his two children, a family friend and her 5-year-old daughter. Do you think he should be jailed or that he's suffered enough, OP?

squoosh · 31/08/2012 14:30

There was an incident a couple of months ago in Wales (I think) where a father stabbed his three children to death and then jumped off a cliff.

Are these acts of filicide becoming more common as it seems to happen with regularity these days? There was a case in Edinburgh last year where a mother also stabbed her three children to death and then tried but failed to commit suicide.

The absolute horror of seeing your siblings being murdered by your loved and trusted parent and knowing you were next.

Dahlen · 31/08/2012 14:30

I have quite a lot of sympathy with the poor woman and agree that probably her harshest punishment will be living with the knowledge of what she's done, but I still feel she should serve the sentence she has received.

To allow a child to suffer for hours after being attacked by the one person supposed to protect her from harm simply has to be paid for. It's not just about punishment for the offender, it's about justice being done for the victim and for justice being seen to be done by the wider public.

Mrbojangles1 · 31/08/2012 14:32

And no doubt the poor girl was calling out for help until she was to weak

squoosh · 31/08/2012 14:32

I don't know anyone who would see any difference in a mother killing her children versus a father killing his children.

BlackberryIce · 31/08/2012 14:33

My ex got zero contact with our children when we split. He had threatened suicide and threatened to take the dc with him too. He had depression also.

Luckily, the judge and cafcass took it on board

Dawndonna · 31/08/2012 14:33

It states quite clearly that at the time she was suffering from a serious mental illness.
I'm so glad you haven't looked after my dh shesariver.

expatinscotland · 31/08/2012 14:33

Oh, you'd be surprised, squoosh. I've seen loads of threads over the years on here calling for the heads of men who murdered their children, but when it's the mother it's, 'Oh, she was depressed.'

expatinscotland · 31/08/2012 14:34

Her mental state was taken into account, she was found guilty of manslaughter on the grounds of her diminished responsibility, rather than murder.

thebeesnees79 · 31/08/2012 14:36

seriously I had moderate/severe post natal depression when my son was 12 months old (having suffered un mediated for the first year of his life) I would never have harmed him in any way. She deserves prison, I can't imagine how horrified her 4 year old must have been while being stabbed to death! This has really upset me. She deserves to live with the pain and mental torment knowing she killed her child and she deserves prison.
It takes no effort to ask for help and support and there is no excuse in the word that can justify what she done.
