isnt that racist? And you addressed your post to CC that is why she has took offence!

roscoe · 15/12/2003 10:26

dl - you just said yourself that if CC agreed with France then it was personal!

dl - the point was that (intentionally or otherwise) you made CC feel very uncomfortable here. She hadn't even posted on this thread but you still brought her into it. That wasn't fair. I like a lot of your posts, even though I don't always agree with you. I just think CC deserves more respect than you gave her.

You'll have to start an apology thread now because otherwise CC won't see it.

The last time I read the Quran (which addmittedly was a while ago) the only reference to covering up was addressed to the prophet's wives. As I remember it they were told to cover their breast. But of course there are always problems when you translate any text. My Arabic isn't good enough to read it in the original.

It always struck me as absurd to make women cover themselves to avoid men's lustful gaze, is getting it completly the wrong way round. The subtext here is that men can't control themselves, and are being let off the hook. It reminds me of Golda Meir's comment when it was mooted that there should be a curfew for women as so many were being attacked and raped. She asked 'Why the women?' given that it is the men that are committing the crimes, surely it should be the men whose movements should be restricted.

Religious issues aside (and I'm sure by now you all know my opinions on that!) it is the resstriction and controlling of women that is offensive. I'm not sure that the act of wearing a headscarf, if it really is the woman's own choice, not something that she has been coerced into by overt or subtle means, is really a problem.

my nan told me that women were expected to cover their heads in church so as not to tempt the men so the fellas could concentrate on the mass!

i have got to say that as a nation france is the pain in the arse of the EU - but lets face it if it was economically brill for UK to ban french beef - if it was politically expediant for the uk to ban french beef as it was splashed all over the news you could die from eating it. dont you think we would? i do

for another thread maybe but micheal moore said in his book that mad cows disease couldnt be burned that it was airborne - he mocks the english govt for pulling off this massive scam with regard to its people with tony blur pronouncing" eat the beef all eat the beef, the beef is good - we burn all the bad shit" ( am paraphrasing) the enlgish govt has to tell us the beef is ok - or shoot themselves in the head.

am glad france is a pain in the arse am glad its people block ferry ports and stick up for their rights at least one nation has got a sodding backbone against us and america
