Add your details here to see how comparatively wealthy you are compared to the rest of the country.

27% of the UK earn less than we do, and we are living on the edge of poverty apparently.

hammy - did you remember to do it as your NET income ?

Hammy02 · 05/07/2012 14:14

Yes - Net income. We pay out a huge amount in rent and don't have kids. Still surprising though.

Oblomov · 05/07/2012 18:13

68% are below. We are the 'squeezed middle'. Tell me about it.

YvonneMcGruder · 07/07/2012 00:17

Squeezed middle and feeling the pinch. Sounds about right to me, definitely feeling the pinch lately! Sad

Tryingtobenice · 10/07/2012 03:03

Not sure what shocks me the most, i know we are well off, with 2 high incomes but don't feel quite 'super rich'. It's not as though we are even in the 50% high tax bracket.

That said, can't believe we pay £95k of tax. Well i can, but in black and white it sounds like a lot.

Probably the worst part is that this is only getting £220 worse this year. I think if i am so very lucky and we really are all in this together our tax should be getting much worse.

AltruisticEnigma · 21/07/2012 22:34

22% and near poverty.

Doesn't surprise me, really. 2/3 of that is my partners... So if it was just me it would be 4% poorer than me...

Could be a lot worse, though.

Mrbojangles1 · 22/07/2012 20:26

53%
HAVE A LOWER INCOME THAN YOU
You are in the squeezed middle: income levels have not risen significantly and you're feeling the pinch

Kind new that already

Catypillar · 22/07/2012 20:46

48% earn less, in the squeezed middle. Just thankful we're not in poverty. So much for doctors earning huge amounts though- I'm a registrar (full time, no on call but work way more than my contracted hours anyway), a couple of years off being a consultant- somehow the Daily Mail seem to think we all earn £250k!

kellibabylove · 22/07/2012 21:12

47% "squeezed middle"

stargirl1701 · 22/07/2012 22:20

92% earn less than us. Wow. Humbling. I would've guessed we were in the middle before this. I think we tend to compare with people we know rather than the full spectrum of income.

Lilymaid · 22/07/2012 22:25

92% earn less than us too. But a few years ago we had two dependent children and only one salary and a big mortgage, so would have been nearer 50%.

FunnysInLaJardin · 22/07/2012 22:29

89% earn less than we do. And money is tight here!

msbuggywinkle · 23/07/2012 21:15

46%, also squeezed middle. We feel quite comfortable though because we have a tiiiiny mortgage and don't drive so have no daft quantities of insurance to pay.

hardboiledpossum · 26/07/2012 13:45

We are living on the edge of poverty. We live in London so have incredibly high rent. It is a struggle sometimes. I don't understand how people with 80%+ can really be struggling.

Glitterknickaz · 26/07/2012 13:52

0% are lower... But then that's life on benefits...

Yorkpud · 26/07/2012 14:01

50% - this is a new development as I work more hours now. If we just had my husbands income would be approaching poverty which seems ridiculous as he has a good job.

DamselInDisgrace · 26/07/2012 14:03

87% earn less than us. I think whether you are struggling by on that or not depends on all kinds of things that classifying people purely by income cannot encompass. Some people have a great deal of wealth, which means that a far greater proportion of their income is disposable, whereas many people live in areas with very high housing costs (often because that's where they need to be for work) or they have hideous commuting costs, or high childcare costs, or all of these things. These people will have far less disposable income and may struggle to get to the end of the month even with a high income.

BenedictsCumberbitch · 26/07/2012 14:08

61% and squeezed middle. I think that's fair.

LackaDAISYcal · 26/07/2012 14:08

57% and squeezed middle here. Sounds right.

We would be better off if we hadn't had another dc (unplanned) or if I had gone back to my professional job, or if we weren't paying a mortgage obtained when our combined income was almost double what it is now. Our lifestyle choices though. We could sell and buy in a worse area, or rent.

We still just qualify for child benefit, and my part time job is worked around DH to avoid childcare. Otherwise we really would be sunk.
