Add your details here to see how comparatively wealthy you are compared to the rest of the country.

27% of the UK earn less than we do, and we are living on the edge of poverty apparently.

Out of interest I readjusted the figures and took off our commuting costs and childcare and it pushed us down to the edge of poverty. Down from 47 to 19.

mum23girlys · 22/06/2012 23:19

56% and squeezed middle. Not a fair comparison though as dh spends over £300 a month just getting to work Angry. Can't afford a house closer to his job though as if we sold our nice(ish) 3 bed semi we'd be lucky to be able to afford a 1 bed flat in that area. Can't save enough every month to get a bigger deposit as we spend so much on fuel....vicious circle Sad

Though I do know we're lucky as in the bills are paid and we have a lovely wee family

dangerousliaison · 22/06/2012 23:25

6% earn less than me

JugglingWithTangentialOranges · 22/06/2012 23:25

Ours came out as 31% (my lucky number and just into "squeezed middle" ?) which although I'm vague on figures could be about right. However since housing costs are low for us, I think we're pretty much around the average overall. Also in terms of standard of living - get some treats when go to stay with DGP's for example eg. DM paid for tickets for us all to go to London aquarium last time we visited - all helps Smile

Ryoko · 23/06/2012 00:06

26% squeezed middle apparently (tho I'm under no illusions, if we lived outside London we'd be able to have a mortgage on a house or flat).

CouthyMow · 23/06/2012 09:35

5%. Tell me something I don't know...

HarriettJones · 23/06/2012 09:40

7%.

Didn't think we were that bad Confused Probably cos we live in a cheaper area than lots and don't have CC costs.

SpottyTeacakes · 23/06/2012 09:45

48% squeezed in the middle, this doesn't take into account where you live though, rent varies greatly across the country for example

Meglet · 23/06/2012 09:50

18% are lower than me. TBH it might be worse but I didn't have the precise WTC figures to hand. I didn't include the childcare tax credits as they aren't my money to spend IYSWIM.

We are on the edge of poverty. No shit sherlock.

PorkyandBess · 23/06/2012 09:53

71% 'comfortable'

Am going to show dh as he thinks we're paupers.

maristella · 23/06/2012 09:59

30% and on the edge of poverty

maristella · 23/06/2012 10:07

Ignore my last post, I just did the tax calculator and recalculated:

38% and in the squeezed middle. Definitely feels more like the edge of poverty

42% Squeezed middle, but with grown up children, mortgage paid by renting out and living in Forces accommodation which is comparable with HA rent, we live pretty well, run two cars and a caravan.

But I was a single parent for 18 years, with no maintenance and worked three jobs before I married DH 15 years ago, so dont feel guilty about it.

Catsdontcare · 23/06/2012 10:12

74%. I'm really shocked by that. Reality check! Would show it to dh but he'd miss the point and still insist we are skint

BreeVanDerTramp · 23/06/2012 10:16

57% and squeezed middle. To attain this life of luxury Hmm DH has to work away all week otherwise he would be unemployed, probably much less if I accounted for his travel and accommodation costs.

AberdeenAnxious · 23/06/2012 10:17

I didn't read it properly and put our monthly allowance in at first. Unsurprisingly there were 0% on a lower income than us and we were in poverty!

Now that I've done it properly it's 60% lower and we're the squeezed middle.

dangerousliaison · 23/06/2012 10:20

are you allowed to live in forces accomodation if you own another home shoshe?

Badvoc · 23/06/2012 10:20

We are the squeezed middle apparently

Ragwort · 23/06/2012 10:24

I am in the comfortable range which I absolutely agree with, interestingly it is because we have an only child, I pretended we had two children and then I would be 'squeezed middle'.

catinboots · 23/06/2012 10:27

I CANNOT believe we are in the top 5th of household incomes.

We are mega skint all the time!

Shoshe · 23/06/2012 10:29

Yep, a lot of soldiers buy a house when they are getting to the end of their time in the forces, if not they would start paying there mortgage from age 40 on, if they left it till leaving.

PeaTarty · 23/06/2012 10:31

catinboots - how on earth are you "skint" with that kind of income?! Do you understand what skint is?

monkeymoma · 23/06/2012 10:34

PeaTarty IMO people with those incomes who think they're skint don't count all the assest they could fall back on and sell if they needed to

really skint is having nothing left to sell/get rid of/downsize/cutback on!

you're not really skint if you are in a massive house or expensive area that's a big outgoing as you have the capacity to move to a small home in a cheap area, if you're already in a tiny home in a cheap area and you've already sold your car etc and you are not making ends meet THEN you're skint!

monkeymoma · 23/06/2012 10:37

its the difference between having options and safety nets, and having literally nowhere else to go and nothing left to cut back on

e.g. really skint people already don't pay out on life insurance etc
