Breaking news is that Mr and Mrs Philpott have been arrested for the murder of their six children. I cannot believe this has happened. I pray that a mistake has been made. RIP children.

Where would the trial take place? would it be local?

edam · 30/05/2012 22:35

lifesalong - because it's very difficult to prove contempt of court in a pub conversation and it would be pointless as only a handful of people would have heard the remarks. Remarks made on the internet can potentially be seen by millions of people. That doesn't mean we have to shut up but it does mean you have to be aware of the fact that they are presumed innocent and have not yet even come to trial, let alone been convicted.

LadySybildeChocolate · 30/05/2012 22:35

No, Silly. I don't think they trial major cases in the home city. Nottingham, possibly.

hiveofbees · 30/05/2012 22:38

What would the implications be for 'future similar cases'?

HumpheadWrasse · 30/05/2012 22:40

I do not, cannot, and will not believe that any parents would deliberatly burn their children to death. How can the police have come to the conclusion that that could be a possibility? (rhetorical question btw, no-one except those involved and the police investigating can have an idea of what's happened without wild speculation)

hiveofbees · 30/05/2012 22:41

Parents can do all kinds of horrible things to their children.Sad

LadySybildeChocolate · 30/05/2012 22:43

It's impossible to say why this happened. I do think that remand is going to be hell for them though, whether guilty or not.

Morph2 · 30/05/2012 22:43

i work in derby (live in another E midlands county) and the talks been of nothing else the last couple of weeks so i don't think anything someone would read of this thread would influence them if they hadn't been already

duckdodgers · 30/05/2012 22:45

Im not going to speculate at whether they are guilty or not, Im just a bit surprised at the amount of "omg I cant believe it" type posts. Parents are meant to nurture and care for their children but not all do. What is it about this that some people find so hard to accept?

the police will no more - way more- than they are going to tell anyone publicly. The facts will come out at the trial. unless you are on that jury it is doubtful you will find out the full story.

12 jurors will have to decide on whether they are guilty beyond all reasonable doubt.

i dont envy that jury.

ThatVikRinA22 · 30/05/2012 22:47

*know more......bloody hell. know not no.

molschambers · 30/05/2012 22:48

God I agree Vicar. I would hate to be on that jury.

topknob · 30/05/2012 22:49

tamisara you may be right but I hope this isn't the case

GnocchiNineDoors · 30/05/2012 22:49

Tbh, if they did it, and aren't insane, they need to plead guilty and not let this get to trial.

BustersOfDoom · 30/05/2012 22:54

Agree Vicar the police only reveal publicly what they have to to bring witnesses forward. Much more will be revealed if it goes to trial.

cheesesarnie · 30/05/2012 23:00

lovely how everyone is judging the intellegence levels of two people that they do not know that may or may not have commited a (awful) crime.

because we're all so smart on mn.

sod jury service, all cases should come straight to mn.

cheesesarnie · 30/05/2012 23:01

i mean sod court cases.

QueenEdith · 30/05/2012 23:07

CPS statement includes the exhortation that all defendants are entitled to a fair trial, and that nothing should be said or published which would prevent that.

Posts on MN are a form of publication.

cheesesarnie · 30/05/2012 23:12

queen-
not disagreeing etc as am clueless but curious and on mn half the people think youre making a direct attack on them for asking a genuine question in reply to something they said, anyway.......

out of interest, how does the media get away with that then?

hiveofbees · 30/05/2012 23:21

Get away with what?

cheesesarnie · 30/05/2012 23:25

sorry got carried away with babble.

how do the press get out of what queen mentioned about fair trial and that nothing that prevents a fair trial should be published ?

wannaBe · 30/05/2012 23:25

the idea that a trial could be prejudiced by people discussing it on the internet is ridiculous. The fact is that this case is being discussed the country over. It is national news, not just local. Media coverage of cases is such these days that it is impossible for any jura to be completely unexposed to a case before it comes to trial.

nancy75 · 30/05/2012 23:26

Cheesesarnie, the media don't get away with it any more, after the Joanna Yates case both the sun and the mirror were fined huge amounts for printing stuff about her landlord.

hiveofbees · 30/05/2012 23:27

The newspapers are meant to be responsible in what they print. They have been heavily criticised in the past eg the Yeates murder, for irresponsible reporting.
