Breaking news is that Mr and Mrs Philpott have been arrested for the murder of their six children. I cannot believe this has happened. I pray that a mistake has been made. RIP children.

The media are not allowed to comment on any aspect of a case once someone has been charged, except for strictly factual reports of hearings etc.

Take the case of Sian O'Callaghan, abducted and murdered in Swindon just over a year ago - and the accused led police to the buried body of another young lady. Have you read a lot about that in the media since the guy was charged? No. You haven't.

That said I agree with wannabe, no judge can expect to find a jury of people that have not heard of this or other high profile cases.

cheesesarnie · 30/05/2012 23:29

Thankyou.

percy was that to me? about have i read alot in the media?

wannaBe · 30/05/2012 23:29

once charges are brought, the press are not allowed to discuss any details of the case beyond their names and what they have been charged with.

PercyFilth · 30/05/2012 23:38

It was rhetorical, cheesesarnie, but addressing the question you asked :)

cheesesarnie · 30/05/2012 23:45

oooohhh. Grin

-was thinking but i explained it was pure curiousity and that im not jumping on bandwagon of 'they must be guitly etc'.

Totally agree VicarInaTutu

MrsGuyOfGisbourne · 31/05/2012 06:37

It surely seems likley that after other hgh profile cases where children have been involved eg the Karen Mattehws case and now this, the public will be more cynical in case of child deaths and abductions, and less inclined to contribute to funds - eg as in this case to help with the funeral costs.

BonnieBumble · 31/05/2012 06:52

Very irresponsible of The Sun to print that story now they have been charged. Do they want to jeopardise the trial?

WidowWadman · 31/05/2012 06:54

Bonnie - the article is 4 years old. It's just poulay who dug it up now.

hiveofbees · 31/05/2012 06:57

The children will still need a funeral mrsguy. Maybe more now than ever people might need to donate. Sad

I agree with you about the fundraising in the claimed abduction cases. Sometimes it isnt even clear what the fundraising is mean to be for eg cases with a massive police response and still people appealing for funds. So many in America at the moment, where children have disappeared, and the parents are saying that the child has been kidnapped. Sad Thoses stories dont seem to be covered much in the UK news though, I'm not sure why, maybe its just not close enough to home.

BonnieBumble · 31/05/2012 06:57

Oh. It had todays date on so I assumed it was in this mornings papers.

BonnieBumble · 31/05/2012 06:58

Now the date has changed to 2007. I am
obviously more tired than I thought.

QueenEdith · 31/05/2012 07:02

Newspapers and individual journalists can and have been prosecuted if they publish material that is considered prejudicial. (remember Liddle?)

It could happen to both site owners and individual posters, for internet posting is considered to be worldwide publication.

If you want to chat (ie speculate) about the case, then you need to take that into RL. Even if you see MN as a chat with mates, the law doesn't.

BonnieBumble · 31/05/2012 07:06

The comments on the YouTube are vile.

RabidAnchovy · 31/05/2012 08:18

Those poor children still need to be laid to rest, whoever murdered them, If it was there parents or not, the children could not help who they were born to or what they were born in to, there are still 6 little bodies lying in a morgue waiting to be buried Sad

I stand by what I have said on the first thread, who ever did this is a special kind of evil and I hope there is a special place in hell awaiting them

slartybartfast · 31/05/2012 08:22

but it could have been an accidental fire. you would still be charged if you accidentally had a fire which killed people.

Joining this late, but it has been proven that the fire was started by petrol being poured through the letterbox and set alight - the firepeople can tell what accelerant was used and where the seat of the fire was.

I too am shocked at the parents being arrested. I had originally thought that perhaps they just meant to damage the hosue and not kill the kids, but didn't realise that the smoke would rise - to where the kids were sleeping. The police must be pretty sure about them though because arresting them if they're wrong would turn public opinion aginst them.

The whole set-up is just weird and wrong tbh. Mr Philpott obviously had enough enemies that there could be a few potential suspects. All tragic for those poor children.
