Breaking news is that Mr and Mrs Philpott have been arrested for the murder of their six children. I cannot believe this has happened. I pray that a mistake has been made. RIP children.

I wonder if possible motive was to do with setting up the ex girlfriend in some way? Can't get my head round the inference that they intended to kill the kids though Sad. Still only charged though. Not convicted.

Babylon1 · 30/05/2012 22:04

I can imagine they have gone from being the most pitied to the most reviled people in derby right now.

This is still a situation where the couple are innocent until proven guilty. We shouldn't be speculating on their actions, intellect or reasoning. My heart goes out to the remaining family members who have even more pieces to pick up before they get through this. Think for a moment of the grandparents and other siblings who have to deal with this and all in front of the media.

GnocchiNineDoors · 30/05/2012 22:12

presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Whether or not a jury finds them guilty does not change the fact that a week ago they either did or didn't do it.

SarahJessicaFarter · 30/05/2012 22:17

Ok, presumed... But still, a week ago we can presume they either did or didn't do it. And in this country, thankfully, we still have "beyond reasonable doubt". This is our protection and our human right. Speculation is not helpful.

Olympia2012 · 30/05/2012 22:20

How can you comment on their intelligence? What are you going on?

BustersOfDoom · 30/05/2012 22:21

I totally agree that they are innocent until proven guilty but I have seen a lot of posts on here and on other forums stating that no parent could ever do such a thing. The sad fact is that some have. That is the only point I am trying to make. But that doesn't mean that this couple have done any such thing.

I absolutely hope they are proved innocent if that is the case. I can't imagine anything worse than being accused of killing your children when you are an innocent, grieving victim.

Nancy66 · 30/05/2012 22:21

Sepculation on an internet forum isn't going to affect the outcome of a trial.

LadySybildeChocolate · 30/05/2012 22:21

That's really, really terrible. Those poor children. Charged doesn't mean that they are guilty, just that the Police and the CPS think that there's enough evidence to suggest that they are. It's a jury's job to look at all of the evidence and decide.

No, but it might be worthwhile the Judge checking whether any of the jury are Mumsnetters before holding the trial.

Nancy66 · 30/05/2012 22:23

Why?

SarahJessicaFarter · 30/05/2012 22:27

People on here have already said they are local to Derby (long shot) but they might get called for jury service. If they were influenced by other peoples thoughts and opinions, MN and their involvement in a thread could have a huge impact. Two sides to every story people, a motto to live your life by.

hifi · 30/05/2012 22:27

If they have done it,will have massive implications for future similar cases.matthews/philpot.

Olympia2012 who are you directing your comment to? I agree by the way.

YardBroom · 30/05/2012 22:28

why gnocchi

If i was on the jury, i would listen to all the evidence and then decide. at present, i have thoughts about it, which may well change over time. If presented with evidence that they did not do it, then that would be my verdict.

Nancy66 · 30/05/2012 22:29

ridiculously long shot - plus if they live in Derby then chances are it's being talked of locally don't you think? MN is an irrelevance here.

QueenEdith · 30/05/2012 22:30

No it won't have implications for future cases, unless you think the police in this country are so woefully inadequate they are incapable of investigating all possibilities in any crime.

The investigation is not yet complete. The police/CPS know more than we do at this stage.

LadySybildeChocolate · 30/05/2012 22:31

I live in Derby. Innocent until proven guilty. The police don't know what the motive was behind this.

lifesalongsong · 30/05/2012 22:32

Why would discussing the case on the internet be any different to discussing it in the pub or at work?

You aren't banned from being on a jury because you've discussed the case, as long as we don't libel anyone or break any laws we can air our views.

ASillyPhaseIAmGoingThrough · 30/05/2012 22:33

My goodness, charged with the Murder of their children! Shock Sad
