Breaking news is that Mr and Mrs Philpott have been arrested for the murder of their six children. I cannot believe this has happened. I pray that a mistake has been made. RIP children.

Yeah... I wondered what the 'word' was too.

What happens in cases like this? Things like household bills, belingings, debts etc? Often wonder who deals with that kind of thing if ( talking in general terms) someone gets sent straight from arrest to custodial sentence.

MrsGuyOfGisbourne · 31/05/2012 12:45

I'm sure there will have been lip-readers in court who will elucidate Sad

MrsGuyOfGisbourne · 31/05/2012 12:46

Olympia yes I have often wondered that too.

i think with council house the prisoner gets benefits that pay the rent and the house gets metal plates.on boors and windows and power and water turned off untill the prisoner is released and moves back in? But i could be wrong!

Is this thing about the clothes confirmed? It does sound very odd, but I haven't seen that reported anywhere.

Babylon1 · 31/05/2012 13:17

That's what gets me more than anything, they didn't just APPEAR to love their kids, I believe they DID love the kids more than anything.

But as for the fire and the speculation etc etc, I just don't know - it's certainly shocked a whole community though Sad

Yellowtip · 31/05/2012 13:18

How much comes out will depend on how they plead tomorrow. But I assume they'll plead not guilty.

I shouldn't think anyone at all believes they set out to kill the children, if they did plan the fire. But there's no requirement on the police to pitch the charge as murder, so the CPS obviously believe that the evidence so far indicates that their actions were such as to justify the charge.

Babylon1 · 31/05/2012 13:19

I don't know if the clothes thing is confirmed or not but it's certainly being talked about locally. Sad

Poulay · 31/05/2012 13:21

It makes sense to charge with murder because they can offer a plea bargain for a guilty for manslaughter, no?

BlackAffronted · 31/05/2012 13:24

What word and when? confused!

Olympia2012 · 31/05/2012 13:38

It was in court this morning

Birdsgottafly · 31/05/2012 13:52

"i think with council house the prisoner gets benefits that pay the rent and the house gets metal plates.on boors and windows and power and water turned off untill the prisoner is released and moves back in? But i could be wrong"

Not once a prison sentence is impossed over a certain length of time. Some councils/HA's have the rule that once convicted of an offence, your right of tenancy is removed.

Olympia2012 · 31/05/2012 13:56

You would think so, especially if a life sentence is given

Take Karen matthews for example.... What would have happened to her debts, utility bills, belongings? She had no money to pay any of it, so who did pay it?

RemembersButtonMoon · 31/05/2012 14:09

My understanding is that when on remand (in prison awaiting trial) benefits/rent continue to be paid as the person has not yet been convicted. Once found guilty and sentenced this comes to an end. However, I could be wrong?????..

hackmum · 31/05/2012 14:46

Nancy: "They were charged yesterday evening - what do you think people are talking about?"

I thought they were talking about the fact that they'd been arrested.

Poulay No - we don't have plea bargains in the UK. That's a US thing.

(although en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plea_bargain#Other_common_law_jurisdictions )

Really? How bizarre. How long does it take to pull a top or a pair of jeans off?
