stitch this is rather wrong: " i wouldnt put it past some of those warmongerers to have drawn the cartoons themselves. iyswim."
JanH, Muslims are often identified with the the name "Muhammad" before their names, or the name "Ahmad" after. There is no harm in calling by the name Muhammad, only not in a disrespetful way.
When in my childhood I answered a question by total stranger as to what my name was with "peacedove", he gave me a history of my family, the names of all in the extended family, and then told me that our names should reflect our Muslim identity. Then when he asked me again to tell him my name, I said "Muhammad peacedove Ahmad".
What stitch has said is not universally true among Muslims. What is universally true is that we do not accept a slight on the prophet (pbuh). I should think it to be possible not to accept our prophet as one, without being nasty.
A civilised society is polite. That is all we expect from our neighbours regarding the prophet.
Our concept of the prophets is somewhat different from OT. We believe them not to be infallible, but being protected from sin by God.
