Rapists jailed for just 40 months after judge says 11-year-old victim was 'willing'

KRITIQ · 22/02/2012 14:46

story here.

"Judge David Farrell QC jailed them both for just 40 months each as he accepted the claim that she was willing and looked "at least" 14."

Funny, but I thought 14 was still under the age of consent for sex with a 21 year old man, quite apart from the fact that how a girl or woman "looks" should NEVER be a justification for rape, full stop.

I despair.

Unfortnuately, the only journalist I know works in the Greek media. I have just emailled her to ask if she has any contacts in the British press.

swallowedAfly · 29/02/2012 08:13

i'd explain it as we're back under tory rule and the media are on the evils of the poor feeding frenzy now.

GetOrfMoiiLand · 29/02/2012 09:10

I don't understand either why the hell this isn't all over the papers as a huge story, it is absolutely revolting.

Is anyone on twitter who could tweet journos?

What on earth can we do?

NigellasGuest · 29/02/2012 11:01

I follow Caitlin Moran on twitter - can we all tweet her? This morning she retweeted this shocking report on sexual harassment in the gaming world

seeker · 29/02/2012 11:23

Go for it, nigella. I wish I could do twitter.

NigellasGuest · 29/02/2012 11:26

well I've only been using it for a week and can hardly get my head around how to tweet links! Can anyone on here talk me through it? (I actually tried to do it last night TBH and gave up as I thought I could end up tweeting a load of nonsense by accident)

GetOrfMoiiLand · 29/02/2012 12:23

I have no idea Nigella. I have got a very moribund twitter account but it is set up to follow Janice Turner and Caitlin Moran so I think will tweet them.

I can't do retweets or owt like that.

I will ask my dd for help

NigellasGuest · 29/02/2012 12:34

Retweets are easy - you just press Retweet! But we would want CM or whoever to retweet. something about this case. But I don't know how to condense this case into a catchy re-tweetable tweet, with a link to the actual article etc. I've looked on the "how to use twitter" threads here in talk archives but still no joy. GetOrf if you are able to, with help from DD,please do!
Heard of "early adopters"?? I'm not one of 'em!!

tralalala · 29/02/2012 21:29

great idea to contact some journos, perhaps one or two of them will actually talk about it.

edam · 29/02/2012 22:56

The Sun covered it today.

edam · 29/02/2012 22:57

And the Daily Mail. The Mirror has the story up as well. Dunno what took them all so long.

edam · 29/02/2012 22:59

oops sorry Mail story is from the 22nd. Wonder whether the Sun's was as well but they just stick today's date on the site (and carefully leave it off the actual story).

edam · 29/02/2012 23:00

oops Sun was 21st Feb - I must go to bed my brain has clearly stopped working!

seeker · 01/03/2012 17:09

Bump. Please write.

ohmeohmy · 01/03/2012 17:42

Is there a governing body for judges and professional competence?

Vanfurgstan · 01/03/2012 20:53

It's absolutely disgusting. In this day and age. 11 year old is an absolute child no matter how they look. I can't believe it.

Vanfurgstan · 01/03/2012 20:56

This judge needs to be investigated. Are they under no scrutiny?

timtam23 · 01/03/2012 23:47

Thanks for this thread, I hadn't heard about this story - the poor girl. I've just emailed my MP asking him to raise the matter with the AG and Justice Minister.

TinyPants · 02/03/2012 00:18

Bumping. Sickened and frightened by this.

Vanfurgstan · 02/03/2012 03:04

Bump

NigellasGuest · 02/03/2012 13:20

bump

CavemanDave · 02/03/2012 14:26

Just signed the petition.

timtam23 · 02/03/2012 22:01

I emailed my MP about this very late last night & he replied at 8.30 this morning saying he completely agreed & was happy to raise the matter with the Secretary of State! Am very pleased that he listened and responded so quickly.

edam · 02/03/2012 22:08

Glad to hear it, timtamb.

NigellasGuest · 03/03/2012 09:08

well done CavemanDave and that's fantastic timtam!
Anyone know how to get this tweeted and retweeted?
