26000 cap what it would mean to me

TheHumancatapult · 24/01/2012 10:10

ok some of you ahve complained about the £26000 Benfits capped and then slammed into hunty cat for having to much money left

so to balance it out this how £26000 would be broke down for myself as single parent with 4dc

.£26000 straight away 13200 would have gone to the LL .

so thats £12800

left .Discount Cb as peoplle up to £40000 can earn so tale away £3534 approc

so im now down to 9256 .Tale away council tax Benfit thats me down to £7886 .

thats then down to £151 a week
they will then tale of teh free school dinners have 3dc that entitled ( only 1 has but they will do the sums based on what they are entitled to ) so £6 a day times 5 is £30

£121 left take of £15 for water £20 for gas and £20 for electric bearing in mind most wil be on card/key meters taht charge more

would leave me £56 a week for food and clothes and any extras

Now relook at the figures again that im in h/a at £126 a week my hb is £6652

so think the problem lies when your forced into private rented a large amount of your money is swallowed up by Hb .And remember not all LL will takke Hb so often you pay a preimum for sometime substandard accomidation as they are aware that people can not move

And lets also remember those that are working in low income of £18000 Pa will also recieve top ups too of CB , WTC and CTC

grumpy

yes i freely admitted that i was posting what it would be if not on DLA

and infact chances are Pip will end up not being exempt so that could be the reality for me very soon

( i shall still be in a wheelchair and disabld and have the extra costs but not classed as disabled any more but that is another thread completely

but was pointing out it is differnt compared to how others are being jumped on for what income they have percieved to be left.

I have not added any of the other expesives that huntycat has to pay out of hers .

But for example if PIP goes then i would need to add the taxi fares to shops etc

£26000 straight away 13200 would have gone to the LL .

so thats £12800 left

[leave in CB]

Take away council tax Benfit (1,640) thats me down to 11,160

Then out of that comes free school dinners for 3 DCs, at £6, but presumably this isn't 52 weeks a year?

TheHumancatapult · 24/01/2012 11:27

It shows though just how the figures stack up between private rented /and Housing association

just that it needs to be looked at and think we all agree that there needs to more social housing or low cost housing

OP posts:
AbsofCroissant · 24/01/2012 11:28

So for council housing - is this let out at market rate?

TheHumancatapult · 24/01/2012 11:28

i admit need i forgot to take it down to school holidays but then again i did not round the costs up have checked dd and ds i infact £2.10 a day and ds2 gets £2.50

OP posts:
TheHumancatapult · 24/01/2012 11:31

abs

i was doing the sums from the point of view being in private rented last month and being in H/A rented this month

and no it is not let at at market rates which of course would mess the sums up even more

OP posts:
coccyx · 24/01/2012 11:32

do you get any maintainance from the father/s? or is it all down to the taxpayer

sb6699 · 24/01/2012 11:38

I think we need to include the Child Benefit as we are considering whether the cap will leave benefit claimants with enough to live on rather than the fairness of how CB is allocated iykwim.

THC - glad you're enjoying the new place. Mine is lovely too. I'm literally 10 minutes drive from you so if you fancy coffee one day give me a shout Smile

TheHumancatapult · 24/01/2012 11:51

£26000

£13200 to the Landlord

£1950 council tax benefit times 12

1065 free school dinners £7.10 a day.

Eletric £1040

gas £1040

Water £720

outgoings of £17950

£375 add in dinners for ds1 at collage consertive £2.50 a day

£240add in his top of £8 bus fares

rent top of £1200 a year

someone ele can checik as doing on paper but ima round £21515

OP posts:
TheHumancatapult · 24/01/2012 11:54

so £26000 minus the £21515 outgoings and bearing in mind im being consertive with Gas and Electric bills and not include d tv licence in that

leaves me £4485 a year

OP posts:
TheHumancatapult · 24/01/2012 11:56

so infact thats quite scary what have left from £26000

now divide that by 52 weeks a year £4485 -£86 to feed and clothe us all

OddBoots · 24/01/2012 12:03

I understand that you are excluding the factors that relate to having people with disability in the household but if there were no disability then this situation should only be until the youngest child was at school and then there would be the chance for the parent to work, especially in a case such as yours where there is at least one child older than school age able to help out.

TheHumancatapult · 24/01/2012 12:07

i agree and nothing against what your saying , but that is as long as i can find a job even with best will in the world if no iob i could not work

and remember the cap rules will apply to people in WTC when it becomes UC

I get £20 month child matienace of my xh as he is on long term sick married nad they just had a baby ( but we wont go there as they only have 1 dc there gping to be well under the cap )

The government keep going on about "getting people out of the benefit trap".

The benefit trap consists of two things:

  1. private landlords' enormous rents
  2. means-tested benefits

But the Con-Dems seem to think "the market" and the profit motive are something sacred, and that universal benefits (like Child Benefit) suggest that there IS such a thing as society - and we can't have that can we!

TheHumancatapult · 24/01/2012 12:09

your right im delibratley excuding other factors as me and ds3 are both fortunate that our disbiltes are obvious

oh and before anyone asks why have big family me and my xh were both working at the time

SecondhandRose · 24/01/2012 12:26

Other things you should have are free prescriptions, free dental care, free eye care and help with the cost of school uniform.

rshipstuff · 24/01/2012 12:28

I don't see the point of this example when you've excluded a substantial chunk of your income (child benefit) and I think you are taking off FSMs when they are not figured into the cap, and finally you are not affected anyway as you are in receipt of DLA.

But, carry on.

Ciske · 24/01/2012 12:30

So far all I've learned from huntycat's figures, and these, is that it's perfectly possible to live off £26k a year, provided there are no additional medical costs to cater for. You have £142 a week for food, clothes and extra's. It's not being rich, but you're not starving either.

If it worries you, my advice would be to list all your outgoings, go through where you can economise and see what you need to drop in order to stay within £26k. The moneysavingexpert.com forums are great for support and tips on how to make small budgets stretch very far.

Evilclown · 24/01/2012 12:40

There is no help with school uniform. Nor free school trips and music lessons before anyone adds those in. They are regional variants and are rare .

Free eye care up to point, special lenses not includeD and, here at least, no national health dentist within a reachable distance.

Just to set the record straight.

VeryLittleGravitas · 24/01/2012 12:42

Ciske

Don't forget to take rents into account. Landlords who take HB will deliberately bump the rents above the LHA, knowing that claimants have no choice but to take the property and make up the shortfall out of their other benefits.

If you have the misfortune to end up in emergency B&B then you could lose 90% of your total benefit, leaving you dependent on food and clothing banks in order to survive.

Ciske · 24/01/2012 13:00

Verylittlegravitas - the figures posted by OP already take account of her rent, and she still has enough left for her basic needs. I've seen nothing to indicate that landlords would deliberately increase rents after this change, so I think we need to assume they will stay the same, or perhaps be less, as they might risk losing a tenant if they charge too much.

Unless it can be argued that people on benefits will have higher outgoings than the average family, I don't think we can say they should have a higher income.

SecondhandRose · 24/01/2012 13:35

Schools ask for a contribution for school trips. It is not obligatory to pay for them although not all schools are able to pay for subsidies. This is something you need to discuss with the school as I am sure they would not want your child to miss out because of cost.

Music lessons aswell as the cost of the instrument are extremely expensive for anyoneand everyone.

On the Directgov website there is a page about applying for help with school uniform costs.

TheHumancatapult · 24/01/2012 13:40

i have mot added Cb as it tands will be included in the 26000 maxium benefit so whether i add or not my total income can not be more than 26000 including CB

OP posts:
TheHumancatapult · 24/01/2012 13:44

oh and ni uniform grants it is seen that i you agree to your dc going to a school then your agreeing to making sure they wear correct uniform

forgetting that most schools in uk have uniform

none of ,my dc have sunsidised trips basically no pay no go

OP posts:
TheHumancatapult · 24/01/2012 13:46

so arguing not including Cb Is pointless
