I know what you mean kitty... I try not to think about it but it sort of keeps resurfacing... and in a time and age where a lot of mothers rely on childcare because working... what shall we do ??? suspect everybody and trust noone? That's no life either.

What is the maximum sentence for rape anyway? Did the the judge give the maximum sentence possible legally?

MrsWood · 11/01/2006 15:24

MrsbigD - not worth it - you'd probably be locked up for longer for doing them in, than they were for doing their crimes Ahhh, great system we have in our dear UK...

kittyfish · 11/01/2006 15:27

God, ever since the 6yo was snatched from her bath I have been obsessively locking doors and not letting my dd out of my site. Am also going to take self-defence classes as I just feel so helpless. What would/could I do if someone threatened my daughter...

MrsBigD · 11/01/2006 15:27

that's it you get caught... nowadays you can book a 'hit' for about £500.00 no questions asked

kittyfish · 11/01/2006 15:29

Sounds excellent value to me

MrsWood · 11/01/2006 15:31

Brilliant - we can raise cash on mumsnet fro every one of those w**kers!!! LOL

(For anyone who's a copper - I'M KIDDING! And I'll deny everyhting!)

MrsWood · 11/01/2006 15:32

Just thought MrsBigD - how did you come up with that specific figure, hm?

PeachyClair · 11/01/2006 16:12

Yes, I wondered that. No marital dischord I hope!!!!!

Self defence classes is a good idea. I know someone who was raped because the AS*$ole had planned to snatch her 5 year old daughter, but on that one occasion she hadn't taken her out. It happens.

Beyond that though, and checking that the people you leave your kids with are OK (and even CRB checks outdate immediately- apply for on on Friday, get caught on Saturday and you still ahve the certificate.... and then there's the caught issue of course...) there's little you can do except be aware of your kids and notice any changes in their behaviour or health.

From what I read, she had refused an offer of babysitting before but as a single mum was desperate for help when moving house so accepted. I feel sorry for her, sounds like she was very isolated and just was unlucky. Most abuse anyway is someone who is close to the victim- family members usually I believe.

You can't judge based on something you read in the papers, they're not exactly known for their ability to get facts right are they?

but why shouldn't they have been in sole charge of the baby, and not had the chance?? Are you saying that the mother should have known this would happen....??? The poor mother is a single parent who accepted an offer of babysitting, hell, I have left my children with friends before. And from what i understand the mum was friendly with the girl. The mother now can't trust anyone to watch her child, stop blaming her.

sparklymieow · 11/01/2006 16:39

my sister is a SW who works with the Social worker in charge of this case, she said the facts of this case are nasty (she won't and can't tell me) and the mother is in pieces about it.

I used to babysit at age 14, and when i was 16, my boyfriend would come round too, and some people I did babysit for, had never set eyes on me before (I was well recommended )

cori · 11/01/2006 17:09

I think you are out of order putting any blame on the mother what so ever. You dont know the actual facts of this case. How do you know she didnt take the baby to a doctor or a health vistor? How on earth could anyone tell what unusual behaviour a baby would display to indicate such an event? The only people to blame in this case are the perpertrators themselves.

We are all so shocked and angered by this case because we cant think that human beings dpravity can sink so low.
After all its only been a couple of generations since people started talking about child sexual abuse at all. Nobody believed it was possible.

Who knows what sort of means these sickos use to cover there tracks.

peacedove · 11/01/2006 17:34

words cannot describe it.

I am for introducing the death penalty here, and I do not buy that the 19-year old girl came under malign influence. If we haven't been able to teach 19-year olds how vulnerable a baby is, something is wrong with society. And we should be asking that question: what is wrong with society?

wasn't she abused too (he met her when she was 14)?

cori · 11/01/2006 17:40

Yes, we certainly need to ask that question.
