Hadn't heard about this but just looked on the internet. Looks awful.

christmaslovingbluealien · 11/12/2005 10:21

my mom phoned me up at the crack of dawn to find out if i was ok.
i live in surrey. she lives in the middle east.

on a more serious note, it sounds awful. hope its not as bad as it sounds

northerner · 11/12/2005 10:23

Watching it on the news now

Hope to God the firefighters fighting this will all be OK. It will take a while I think before it's under control.

anorak · 11/12/2005 10:24

I'm five miles away. We were all awoken at 6 am by an extremely loud bang. It popped open our loft hatch. DH went outside and quite a few neighbours were out trying to figure out what had happened.

Now there is smoke pouring into the sky. It's dark, like late afternoon when the sun is going down. The birds in the trees outside are unsettled, they keep hopping from branch to branch and are not singing.

We have to stay in and keep our windows and doors closed.

Redtartanlass · 11/12/2005 10:37

anorak hope you're ok, I heard they might be evacuating people from their homes. Hope that doesn't affect you.

IntergalacticTheRedNosedWalrus · 11/12/2005 10:44

Anorak, hope you are ok!

They said on BBC news that it could be heard 100 miles away in Norfolk, so it must have been one hell of an explosion.

JenumPoinsetta · 11/12/2005 10:48

Yeah we were woken too just after 6. It even woke DH so it must have been loud! We live in Middlesex btw!

It woke me up with that fear of dread - I was shaking myself.

I had to get up and put on Sky News to see what had happened - sounds awful. I just hope everyone around there is ok.

PottyinaPearTree · 11/12/2005 10:49

Anorak - glad you're OK. Hope other Herts. MNers are too.

It's going to take a long time to put out.

misdee · 11/12/2005 10:50

they say no need tp panic buy fuel, do you think they are right? the depot supplies total which is the garage near me, am wondering if its worth nipping out to see what the queues are like and fill up if not too bad. am in welwyn, i live by the gas works here, i said to peter if something like that happened at the gas works then our bunglalow would probably be wiped out. makes me want to move.

PantomimEDAMe · 11/12/2005 10:55

No, don't bother. People are panic buying so you'll have long queues and it will be OK tomorrow.

anorak · 11/12/2005 10:56

I don't think we're going to be evacuated. We're not near enough for that. There are hundreds of houses between us and the site, where would they put us all?

My neighbour just phoned from Portsmouth where he's spending the weekend to ask me if his bungalow is still there

misdee · 11/12/2005 10:57

i'll just check i have enough for tomorrow, think i have about 100miles worth left, nifty litle system in my car tells me how many miles lol.

Kaysleighbells · 11/12/2005 11:01

Just heard from Grommit who is in Hemel. She also had shaking house and now big black cloud overhead.
Glad you're ok Anorak. X

PantomimEDAMe · 11/12/2005 11:12

Anorak, which side of Hemel are you? We are the other side of St Albans (north) and didn't think we had to take any precautions?
Dh says when he heard the explosion it was a 'whoomph'. Our newspaper delivery guy was pulling up outside and said his car shook!

melsy · 11/12/2005 11:14

dd woke up crying after 6 , didnt think anything of it and we all went back to sleep again.

Glad you are ok anorak.

anorak · 11/12/2005 11:14

We're in Bricket Wood.

I'm just following the advice given out on the TV because the plume of smoke is drifting in our direction.

The smoke seems to be getting less now.

TurkeyGang · 11/12/2005 11:16

My God - those of you who woke up to that must've been terrified. Hope you're all ok.

PantomimEDAMe · 11/12/2005 11:16

You are right by the M1, then. We are in Harpenden so not far from it either. Will check local BBC site, thanks!

anorak · 11/12/2005 11:21

Yes, it was quite scary. My dh went out and up the street, and quite a few of the neighbours were outside too, trying to figure out what was going on.

TurkeyGang · 11/12/2005 11:23

I wonder how it happened - they say it was an accident but what could have started it? Hope no-one's been killed.

Big dark smoky clouds drifting over barnet now..... was planning to go to london colney later but might just give it a miss...

anorak · 11/12/2005 11:33

My dh has just come over and told me off for my last post. Apparently it should have read 'My brave, hunky dh went outside....'

TurkeyGang · 11/12/2005 11:43

lol He is brave to go out though - I would've dived under the stairs!
