anyone know how many firemen are there ? My brother is with the Bucks brigade - the neighbouring one - and am wondering if he will have been called in as well.

OMG - just read this and realised that we heard it too in SW London. I was dealing with ds2 and dp was upstairs with ds1 and we both heard a bang. I thought it was him upstairs, he thought it was the neighbours (although they'd only rolled in from a night out 1 1/2 hours earlier).

Hope everyone is OK.

I think the wind has changed and looks as if it is blowing in more of a north-west direction now, rather than west as it was before. The sky is all black over there but this side is now bright sunshine. There's a clear dividing line where the plume of smoke rises.

Was just going to post the same actually, I'm in Barking. Got out of the shower, went into our room, DP on nights asleep and it really does look like night.

The first bang just after 6am woke me up- I'm in Ashford Kent! I thought it was thunder, then it sounded like someone on our deck.

Have you seen it on the satellite image! Can't believe it can be seen from space. If you go to metoffice.co.uk and then click satellite images, you can see the smoke.

Unfortunately I can't link it as the page doesn't have a seperate name.

My dh has just come over and told me off for my last post. Apparently it should have read 'My brave, hunky dh went outside....'

I wonder how it happened - they say it was an accident but what could have started it? Hope no-one's been killed.

Yes, it was quite scary. My dh went out and up the street, and quite a few of the neighbours were outside too, trying to figure out what was going on.

You are right by the M1, then. We are in Harpenden so not far from it either. Will check local BBC site, thanks!

My God - those of you who woke up to that must've been terrified. Hope you're all ok.

We're in Bricket Wood.

I'm just following the advice given out on the TV because the plume of smoke is drifting in our direction.

The smoke seems to be getting less now.

Anorak, which side of Hemel are you? We are the other side of St Albans (north) and didn't think we had to take any precautions?
Dh says when he heard the explosion it was a 'whoomph'. Our newspaper delivery guy was pulling up outside and said his car shook!
