Totally agree that it is not about failing multiculturalism. I lived near Wood Green for years until last summer, and never saw any problems. I imagine economics has more to do with it.

My heart goes out to all you people living there, it is so sad.

FellatioNelson · 07/08/2011 09:55

random 'the' there - sorry!

BulletWithAName · 07/08/2011 09:56

So who exactly has failed them, then?

Well, I'd take a wild guess at their parents.

BulletWithAName · 07/08/2011 09:57

and nope, agree that this one can't be blamed on Shiny Dave either! Grin

FellatioNelson · 07/08/2011 09:58

Shock Wash your mouth out! It can't be the parents fault, surely? It has to be The Bankers' fault. Or the landed gentry.

BulletWithAName · 07/08/2011 10:00

Oh of course, I forgot, how silly of me! Grin

theyoungvisiter · 07/08/2011 10:02

Well it has its problems - sure. Clearly it does. I'm not pretending it's some kind of picture postcard place where everything's rosy. And there are lovely bits and horrible bits, and some of the horrible bits are deeply scary.

As Active says, I think those of us living here are in shock at what's happened and fearful too of what tonight might bring. And incredibly sad. Anyway this thread is making me even sadder so I'm off. :(

BulletWithAName · 07/08/2011 10:03

I hope you keep safe visiter Smile

ActiveVolcano · 07/08/2011 10:03

I agree with some of your views, visiter.

I certainly do not agree with your statement, "I don't know what else there is to say and I find it really sad that my home is being held up as some kind of failed example of melting pot Britain when that's not what I see on the streets every day, and I don't believe if any of you came and visited you would see it either."

I know there are many good people here and it is vibrant with many cultures.

BulletWithAName · 07/08/2011 10:03

Sorry meant add onto the end of that that I can't imagine how scary it must be for you and your family.

ProfessionallyOffendedGoblin · 07/08/2011 10:04

Why do you not agree with her statement? It is supportive of the area she lives in.

ActiveVolcano · 07/08/2011 10:05

Sorry - didn't mean to send post again!

Erm, parents are failing them? Just an idea???

ProfessionallyOffendedGoblin · 07/08/2011 10:06
Confused
BulletWithAName · 07/08/2011 10:07

'vibrant with many cultures.'- Vibrant must be the PC term to describe a shithole, I always see this word come up when describing bad areas.

ActiveVolcano · 07/08/2011 10:09

By saying it is not a melting pot of Britian. I would say it is. What I see around here, at times, is not the kind of society I want my children being brought up in. I am torn. I love the diverse cultures - we are part of that diversity, too.

No, I am not saying it is all bad here. But to say it is not a melting pot. That imo is not true. I see anger and hatrid on these streets. I see families falling apart, parents not parenting. I see a nasty gang culture right on my doorstep.

I am horrified by what has happened and like visiter, I am also logging off now. Enough.

theyoungvisiter · 07/08/2011 10:11

No sorry my post was unclear - I was trying to say it is a melting pot, but it's not broken - that the melting pot multicultualism is not what's causing the problems.

I really am off now - but thanks for the kind words. Luckily we are on a side street and not directly affected so I'm sure we're 100% safe, I just feel heart-wrenched for the shops, traders and community as a whole.

Nancy66 · 07/08/2011 10:53

I feel sorry for the innocent, law abiding people that live in Tottenham
it's an absolute shithole - but if you've got money you can up and leave - if you haven't you're stuck.

As a londoner there are several 'no go' areas for me - Tottenham always being one of them - by day or night. Just not worth the risk.

The rioters in the 1980s seemed to have a lot more justification. This lot are just thugs.

lovecorrie · 07/08/2011 10:54

I have just been on one of the 'RIP Mark Duggan' fb pages and am absolutely astounded by some of the comments -well, to be fair I don't even understand what they're saying! It's awful, the whole situation is hideous, and pages like that are inflaming young people who are already so disenfranchised that anything will make them cause trouble.

Empusa · 07/08/2011 10:58

"This lot are just thugs."

Exactly. There is never any justification for arson and looting! Those things are done by people looking for trouble, and they'll take any excuse they can get. They are disgusting.

ledkr · 07/08/2011 11:03

Most of them didnt even know Mark Duggan i bet. Why is setting fire to innocent peoples homes and businesses and stealing as much as you can, anything to do with feeling pissed off with the police hmm?

BulletWithAName · 07/08/2011 11:04

I particularly like these comments from the 'RIP Mark Duggan' page-

'Listen dis is page to pay respects for man taken frm dis world by da scumiest of ppl so dnt hype init n remember y u liked dis page kmt'- scummiest people being the police of course Hmm

'I don't even know dis guy but RIP. He shoulda took some of dem pussy feds wid him tho'

'fuck da feds..no more police state'

'hope they catch the feds and kill them'

Jesus wept.

Empusa · 07/08/2011 11:05

"Why is setting fire to innocent peoples homes and businesses and stealing as much as you can, anything to do with feeling pissed off with the police hmm?"

The only correlation I can see is that they are pissed off they can't just go around destroying other people's property and threatening people's lives. Hmm

TanyaBranning · 07/08/2011 11:08

Tottenham a 'no go area'? How ridiculous! It is no different to Hackney or Kilburn or Harlesden or Brixton or any other rough-and-ready London area. Too many poor people and pound shops for you? [shick] I also think it is terrible to call whole areas of a city a 'shithole' - areas where people tend to be poor, unemployed, struggling. >Where do you live, Nancy66? You sound mighty pleased with yourself Hmm>

It is depressing that people jump in so quickly with such knee-jerk, ill informed attitudes. There is so obviously a bigger picture here. Economic crisis, severe cuts to Haringey youth services and finding for youth projects, unemployment and very heavy handed policing and excessive use of stop and search in the area. Mark Duggan's death was a trigger, but it isn't the cause of all of this. Opportunists and misguided youths always latch on to these situations, but this isn't 'just a few thugs'. There is a huge amount of frustration brewing in Tottenham and areas like it. It is too easy to blame 'bad kids' and 'gangsters'. But that won't make it go away...

TanyaBranning · 07/08/2011 11:11

Bullet, this is how the vast majority of young people in Tottenham feel, ime. The vast majority. It may be shocking, it may be appalling, but it is real and it needs to be addressed. Why do they feel like this? Why?

Nancy66 · 07/08/2011 11:12

Tanya - I'm pleased i don't have to live in areas like that, yes.
