crazynanna · 08/08/2011 17:15

BBC says unrest after a Stop and Search incident in Hackney. Can't seem to get any more info.

twinklypearls · 08/08/2011 17:31

I really hope there was nobody on that bus in Hackney, imagine being a child and witnessing that.

The BBC reported that a pick axe and sledge hammer were taken from that lorry.

noddyholder · 08/08/2011 17:40

I agre marne can you imagine this crap in france? I don't think so!

Al0uiseG · 08/08/2011 17:42

This latest wave of rioters don't seem to know why they're rioting. Surely we have a stash of water cannons and tear gas somewhere.

samstown · 08/08/2011 17:45

The police are damned if they do and damned if they dont at the moment. Just looking at the footage of Hackney and no, they dont seem to have a lot of control. But if they go in all guns blazing (so to speak), and one of the rioters gets seriously injured or worse, what then? More protests for 'justice'?

Saw Nick Clegg talking to the poor hardworking people of Tottenham (owners of the shops etc) who said that they didnt feel protected adequately by the police. I feel so sorry for them and its terrible that they felt so frightened and vulnerable, but just how heavy handed could the police be in that situation given the circumstances?

EdithWeston · 08/08/2011 17:45

There's a new thread about the Hackney riot here. You might want to keep an eye on it too, as I dare say its title will attract posters with updates.

twinklypearls · 08/08/2011 17:47

Something I found very telling was a report from the site where Mark Duggan was shot. There were just three bunches of flowers left

teejwood · 08/08/2011 17:55

crazynanna sorry that's BS - it's been all over twitter for most of today that hackney was going to be one of the areas targeted tonight. police probably DID a S&S for that exact reason, in fact.....

crazynanna · 08/08/2011 18:01

Don't have to be so touchy teejwood. I have been out of the loop since yesterday (out of London),and wrote in my post exactly what I was reading from running credits on BBC news channel. 'mistaken' maybe...but BShitter?
a) bit strong and b) not me.

EdithWeston · 08/08/2011 18:04

Noddyholder - I don't mind it personally, but I don't think this is the thread to be making light of French riots. Unless you want to bring out a comparison of how lightly armed/equipped the UK response typically is?

EdithWeston · 08/08/2011 18:06

Ignore my last - I think that was exactly the point you meant!

My apologies.

LucreziaDomina · 08/08/2011 18:13

Look, ultimately it is a tragedy that a young man, a father is dead. But the tragedy is that he was carrying a gun himself as much as anything else.

cookcleanerchaufferetc · 08/08/2011 18:26

These scumbags just deserve an almighty slap and sent to boot camp or prison. And the parents of any kid under 16 who is caught should be made to go on parenting courses.

This is one time when I wish we were like the French ... bring out the water cannons and lob a few tear gas cannisters!

tiredemma · 08/08/2011 18:29

cant the police just blast them with water cannons?

LDNmummy · 08/08/2011 18:39

"Anyways, its all besides the point, because if you believe that the looting that took place in Enfield was the disaffected and deprived youth of Enfield simply trying to get their voice heard, then you are being a bit naive. It was kids from all over London trying to get their hands on some 'free stuff' that they had been promised if they came and joined in the fun against the 'feds'."

Actually I think it is a bit of both of these things though fuelled by the socio economic factors that affect these young people. I think from the sheer amount of young people involved in these riots, we can see there is a communal feeling of whatever kind within these young people. I don't think a mass of young people would act like this unless society has caused an environment in which this could be the case.

LDNmummy · 08/08/2011 18:40

Water Cannons are lethal and can even BLIND protesters which unfortunately has happened before.

cookcleanerchaufferetc · 08/08/2011 18:48

water cannons are lethal ..... excellent ..... bring it on!!!

These people are not protesting, they are thieving yobby scummy arsonists.

Al0uiseG · 08/08/2011 18:49

Gosh! We wouldn't want to hurt a rioter would we? Especially not a destroyer of other peoples homes and property.

Might make the fuckers think before they set out.

cookcleanerchaufferetc · 08/08/2011 18:51

I vote water cannons ... apparantly the effects of tear gas wear off after a few minutes.

Unless we taser them all .....

Fuck it, lets continue like it started ... with guns .... bring out the rubber bullets!

EdithWeston · 08/08/2011 18:52

How many have been involved in the riots? A few thousand?

Population of London? 6 million.

This is NOT a protest - this is criminal damage and theft. And the victims are residents of some of the most deprived areas of London. Shame on them.

EdithWeston · 08/08/2011 18:54

Sorry - appalling drafting. "Shame on them" was about the rioting criminals (not the residents of the trashed areas).

And I should have said that the comment was generally in response to the idea that there is a large and representative number of rioters.

samstown · 08/08/2011 18:56

'I think from the sheer amount of young people involved in these riots, we can see there is a communal feeling of whatever kind within these young people.'

Yes, there is a communal feeling of 'lets take advantage of what is happening by theiving stuff that we havent worked for, ruining hard working people's businesses in the process'.

Marne · 08/08/2011 18:57

You are right Edith, its not a protest at all ,just an exscuse to cause damage and to pinch what ever they can lay there hands on, most of the little sh*its that are doing it have no idea why it all started.

I dont understand why the police are not armed (with rubber bullets), and i agree 'bring on the water cannons' , the police have very little control over this Sad.

LDNmummy · 08/08/2011 18:58

I wonder how many MN's have kids out their being part of this without their knowledge. Quite a few I would imagine.

Your comments show how out of touch with the young disadvantaged of our society you really are.

This is definitely not simply about a man who was shot, this is about anger from our young people towards a government and institutions such as the police force, that they feel are against them rather than supporting them. The man being shot was significant because it fuelled an anger toward a social institution that these people feel is failing them IMO.

Again it is notable that these riots are all starting in deprives area's.

Lewisham/ Peckham

Hackney

Enfield (despite what some might think has a massive amount of deprevation which is largely ignored)

Tottenham

Brixton

I do think it would be good to note that it is not just young people involved though.

Al0uiseG · 08/08/2011 19:02

Ldnmummy I can assure you that my children are categorically not involved in this criminal activity and I resent the implication that they are.

Don't judge us all by your own standards.
