New thread to continue from God those NoW journos were utter scum weren't they?

OP posts:
teejwood · 14/07/2011 23:36

um - you can probably guess! short hand summary of a couple of years' worth of conversations would be: "he's clever; but do not trust him as far as you can throw him. actually, just don't trust him. he keeps telling me this internet thing is a load of woo. he's not interested because he says you can't make money from it."
oh and the person concerned was absolutely lovely. vv hard pushed to say a bad word about anyone. which is why i gave his opinion such credence.

claig · 14/07/2011 23:36

Murdoch even said in that article that he wouldn't accept a Lordship or knighthood, because he sees that as selling out to the establishment.

GrimmaTheNome · 14/07/2011 23:41

Sour grapes maybe..

teejwood · 14/07/2011 23:42

claig thatcher would happily have closed/sold off every asset in the UK to foreign ownership if it appeased her and her economic advisors. from Thatcher onwards, successive governments have ceded more and more power to NI - and look where it's got us.

here's a thought - RM sells off NI to the investment vehicle of a megarich totalitarian regime, which then starts to censor what we can say about the regime and human rights. and frankly, they aren't that concerned about human rights in the UK either. wave bye to freedom of the press if voices outside NI are quashed.

claig · 14/07/2011 23:43

Maybe or maybe independence.

teejwood · 14/07/2011 23:43

claig might that be because he believes himself above all regimes/society?

GrimmaTheNome · 14/07/2011 23:43

Not that US citizens get offered Lordships anyway...easy to be high-minded about something you're not eligible for.

teejwood · 14/07/2011 23:45

claig ah - this is where we get the line about profit delivering the only independent press - what JM left out of that speech in Edinburgh was that it can also castrate free and fair government/policing, as we have seen.

claig · 14/07/2011 23:46

But there are lots of Labour MPs who say that as a matter of principle they would never accept a knighthood, as that signifies joining teh establishment and distances themselves from the ordinary working class people. Of course, many of their "principles" vanish when offered a knighthood.

claig · 14/07/2011 23:48

'it can also castrate free and fair government/policing, as we have seen'

but whose fault is that? Who is running the country?

claig · 14/07/2011 23:48

Why bother voting if Rupert is in charge whether Gordon or Dave gets in?

claig · 14/07/2011 23:56

What percentage of the TV and radio market do the BBC have?

teejwood · 15/07/2011 00:04

claig - the culture of any organisation comes from the top. an MP taking a peerage or similar is a whole mountain of integrity/"principles" removed from an organisation that customarily hacks the phones of murder victims and their families. no one on these threads has said the police and politicians aren't culpable. no-one has said other tabs (DM) don't have questions to answer. but NI stands proud on this one - for all the wrong reasons.

claig · 15/07/2011 00:08

I'm not supporting NI. It was reprehensible some of the things they are claimed to have done. But all those who courted them, went to their parties, dined with them and now act like saints and accuse them of being sinners also doesn't ring true.

bullet234 · 15/07/2011 00:18

"i take it the homophobia comment is founded on the ex incident".

The MP Chris Bryant, who is gay (which is relevant to this story) recounts how he was at a party/some sort of social gathering that Rebekah Brooks was also at. She came over to him and said:

"Oh Mr Bryant, it's after dark. Shouldn't you be on Clapham Common?"
Apparently Ross Kemp, who was then married to her, then said:
"Oh shut up you homophobic cow."

teejwood · 15/07/2011 00:21

urgh - thanks for the clarification, bullet

This is a Saudi prince who is one of News Corps biggest backers saying that RB should resign. I heard him on the World Service and I didn't hear him say that. He did keep referring to his high moral standards, and that NotW was a bad apple that had been exised. He also said that RM should and would co-operate with investigations in UK and US and said nice things about the judge who would be leading the investigation. And then some more about his high moral standards.

bullet234 That's the incident that caught my attention re RB and Chris Bryant. Apparently Ross Kemp said Shut up you homophobic caaaaaaaaw on the spot. Sounded to me like the unnecessary spite might not have actually been directed at Chris Bryant at all really. All sounded a bit more like a passive-aggressive domestic argument with CB as the stooge.

ClaireDeLoon · 15/07/2011 10:02

Apparently Brooks has resigned - breaking news on bbc.

sayanything · 15/07/2011 10:05

Aha. I guess third time was the charm, Claire.

It's not enough though.

midnightexpress · 15/07/2011 10:10

I agree Claig - I thought Vince Cable's comment on PM last night was spot-on - 'it's a bit like the end of a dictatorship, when everyone suddenly realises they were against the dictator'. They've all been in it together, cosying up to NI. Shame on the lot of them.

She resigns on the day that the FBI announce that they are investigating whether there was hacking into the phones of victims and families of 9/11?

The FBI would not be starting such an emotive investigation if they did not already have some basic evidence.

I'm guessing this is the bigger thing that was alluded to when she told the NOW staff that they would understand in due course why the paper had to close.

I wouldn't be surprised if within 12 months she is being extradited to America to face criminal charges.

This could possibly end up being the end of Murdoch as well, given the sensitivity of anything to do with 9/11. The relationship between News Corp and the Republicans is not parasitic, it is symbiotic. If this turns out to be true, the republican party will do everything it can to distance itself from News Corp given next years elections. Murdoch not survive that.
