angle. not sure what an agle is, but it doesn't sound like anything I or Murdoch could find Grin

NormanTebbit · 14/07/2011 21:57

You know I've been wanting to watch Man on Wire for ages and now they are giving it away with the ST.

My first real test of principles. Gah!

HeIsSpartacus · 14/07/2011 21:58

Interesting posts on China and Harper Collins being in play as well.

Has anyone ever updated a Wikipedia page? I feel like some of these interesting points should make their way over there.

I was trying to think why I am so fascinated by all of this and despite finding the legal & consitutional aspects interesting, it's got to be about the glimpses into the psychology/personalities/consciences of the main players (Andy Coulson's affable faltering; Andy Hayman's boyish ambitions; Rebekah Brooks's spiteful homophobia and from whence it came and why...) - RM is less of interest to me, power for power's sake, the 'outsider' complex, all seems pretty straightforward and a little predictable.

However, I am becoming increasingly resigned to seeing the US paint itself as coming to rescue of the 'weak' British constitution by prosecuting News Corp for bribing and corruption abroad. Will try and refind the article but already read one US article about US having to step in to fill the void. I am hoping my faith in the flexibility of our constitution and adherence to overarching principles (such as no one being above the law) will be well placed but...gah.

And then there's the Marple moments where I am washing up, wondering what Daniel Morgan knew or had done that someone killed him so horrifically.

Pannus · 14/07/2011 22:01

Bornsicky - too right! No tone unsturned... he is far from finished.

Pannus · 14/07/2011 22:03

NormanTebbit - this is surely one occasion when it's OK to steal? Might be tricky to get it out of the plastic wrapper though! Use child as subterfuge?

BornSicky · 14/07/2011 22:04

heisSpartacus

you could well be right about the US having another/wanting another "we saved the brits" moment. However, I think that it might spur the UK legal teams and inquiries on a little more, as they definitely won't want to lose face here.

statement from Murdoch:

Murdochs first statement on the story

BornSicky · 14/07/2011 22:06

Murdoch: "some of the things that have been said in Parliament, some of which are total lies. We think it's important to absolutely establish our integrity in the eyes of the public......I felt that it's best just to be as transparent as possible."

bien sur monsieur, bien sur... click clack

Pannus · 14/07/2011 22:07

Morgan's brother Alastair and his elderly mother believed, with credible evidence to draw on, that he was killed because he was about to expose a network of corrupt police who were involved in widespread criminality and used Southern Investigations as a conduit for drugs and money. Morgan's business partner, Jonathan Rees, counted many officers as friends. One of his specialities was to use his "friends" in the force to provide information which he sold to tabloid newspapers. source the Guardian

Pannus · 14/07/2011 22:08

establish our integrity - hahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahaha

Pannus · 14/07/2011 22:11

ThisIsANiceCage · 14/07/2011 22:15

not sure what an agle is, but it doesn't sound like anything I or Murdoch could find

It's just your phonetic spelling, BornSicky, you mean aiguille. Still hard to find in a Hayman.

OP posts:
BornSicky · 14/07/2011 22:22

merveilleuse!

teejwood · 14/07/2011 22:45

norman man on wire is £3.49 with free delivery on amazon. Smile

teejwood · 14/07/2011 22:47

pannus you are vv right about RM and the internet. Back in the mid-late 90's when the web was really taking off RM would tell anyone and everyone who'd listen that it was a "passing phase" Hmm.

teejwood · 14/07/2011 22:53

spartacus welcome to the unravellers and i take it the homophobia comment is founded on the ex incident?

teejwood · 14/07/2011 22:57

pannus these tools for monitoring twitter etc are kind of scary. they will enable near real-time repudiation of comments on social networking sites, enable organisations and individuals to target people who are "against" them. combine that with the personal data, results of tracking cookies etc that the likes of FB are collecting - and arguably people who are "beyond the law" could make life v difficult for anyone who speaks out against them.

AitchTwoOh · 14/07/2011 23:06

it's wrong, isn't it, that i am working my way through the adam curtis clips and finding RM kinda sexy...?

teejwood · 14/07/2011 23:11

aitch is someone else using your id?! the dirty digger Shock

AitchTwoOh · 14/07/2011 23:13

heheh. i am Not Even Kidding. he is kinda awesome in his ruthlessness. have you watched the clips, teej?

teejwood · 14/07/2011 23:17

aitch oh dear lord no

teejwood · 14/07/2011 23:18
AitchTwoOh · 14/07/2011 23:21

Watch The Clips, teej. you're only not doing it cos you're scared to.

teejwood · 14/07/2011 23:26

no aitch i worked with someone (pre DC) who knew RM well and based upon what that person said, nomatter what the portrait i will only see the essence - not the visage - of the man.

AitchTwoOh · 14/07/2011 23:27

ooooh, what did they say?

claig · 14/07/2011 23:29

Reading the Adam Curtis article, it seemed to me that the establishment (Lord so and so) didn't like Murdoch because he was an outsider (not one of them). The BBC seemed to represent the establishment, and Thatcher allowed Murdoch in, as Thatcher was more pro-business and anti-establishment.
