New thread to continue from God those NoW journos were utter scum weren't they?

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/07/2011 19:36

blimey.
I can't keep up with all this!

Terribletriplets · 17/07/2011 19:37

Maybe it was all a dream?

ThisIsANiceCage · 17/07/2011 19:38

The stay was in January, apparently, and it was "recorded in the Commissioner's Gifts and Hospitality Register on his return to work in April. This register is published quarterly on the MPS website and the entry for the quarter April to June is due to be published shortly."

Which should be easy to check.

OP posts:
ThisIsANiceCage · 17/07/2011 19:38

Jeez, I can't even type without missing something!

Ponders · 17/07/2011 19:48

from the Telegraph: 'Sir Paul was offered hospitality by News International on 15 occasions between April 2007 and March 2010 - accepting 14 of the invitations.'

The Champneys thing may be a red herring. I'd be v interested to see details of the 14 accepted invitations though Smile

edam · 17/07/2011 19:51

Good grief, so he has.

Well, the Mayor was pissed off he hadn't mentioned Wallis, as was the MPA and the PM.

Champneys stay is outrageous - no police officer, let alone the Commissioner, should be accepting £12k from anyone (other than immediate family).

Terribletriplets · 17/07/2011 19:58

It is my humble opinion that crime has been bought down because we have an ageing population.

BornSicky · 17/07/2011 20:15

"Secondly, once Mr Wallis's name did become associated with Operation Weeting, I did not want to compromise the Prime Minister in any way by revealing or discussing a potential suspect who clearly had a close relationship with Mr Coulson. I am aware of the many political exchanges in relation to Mr Coulson's previous employment - I believe it would have been extraordinarily clumsy of me to have exposed the Prime Minister, or by association the Home Secretary, to any accusation, however unfair, as a consequence of them being in possession of operational information in this regard. Similarly, the Mayor. Because of the individuals involved, their positions and relationships, these were I believe unique circumstances."

Right, so Stephenson couldn't involve the Prime Minister because he believed the PM was biased because of Coulson.

Crikey! I smell a Cameron resignation next.

this is too, too surreal.

Ponders · 17/07/2011 20:18

the fact that he's stubbornly refused to admit he made a mistake about Coulson doesn't bode well

BornSicky · 17/07/2011 20:23

absolutely ponders

and it's obviously coming back to bite him in the arse now if the Commissioner of the MET says that Coulson's close relationship with Cameron prejusidced him from discussing a case(s) that affect the highest levels of the media and police force.

Terrible, terrible lack of judgment.

BornSicky · 17/07/2011 20:24

right, i'm starting a betting pool.

Please bet the date for Cameron's resignation.

I'm going with 25th July 2011.

PirateDinosaur · 17/07/2011 20:27

Shamelessly cut-and-pasted from FB: "Now that Brooks has gone, NOTW has gone and BSKYB has gone, there are only 4 more horcruxes before Murdoch is vulnerable!"

boswelloxsmith · 17/07/2011 20:28

When If Cameron does resign, does Nick Clegg become PM?

radiohelen · 17/07/2011 20:29

No wheels on our wagon.. and were still rolling along! This just gets bigger and is mental.
It does expose the incestuous nature of politics at the top though doesn't it. I don't think you can say the PM has to resign because of this... unless there's something else lurking in that cupboard.

TheRealMBJ · 17/07/2011 20:32

Shock O.M.G.

TheRealMBJ · 17/07/2011 20:33

Oh, but helen of course there is.

GrimmaTheNome · 17/07/2011 20:36

If Cameron does resign, does Nick Clegg become PM?

He might be acting PM until the Conservative party elected a new leader, who would then become PM.

BornSicky · 17/07/2011 20:36

helen

I think if the head of the Met feels he can't discuss the potential crimes committed by the Prime Minister's key media adviser directly because the PM has too "close" a relationship, then that strongly demonstrates that the PM has terrible judgment and is not accountable or transparent in his actions.

Therefore, the country and the people can't trust him for the above reasons.

The buck stops at the top.

NormanTebbit · 17/07/2011 20:37

'integrity intact'

Ha! So's your fucking pension, I'll bet

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/07/2011 20:37

I'm going for the 22nd July.

Ponders · 17/07/2011 20:37

'James Murdoch signed cheques for between £800,000 and £1 million to Gordon Taylor, the chief executive of the Professional Footballers? Association, and Max Clifford, the publicist, which critics say effectively bought their silence.
Mr Murdoch said last week that he would not have signed the cheques if he had known then what he knows now.
He, Mrs Brooks and Mr Hinton have denied any knowledge of widespread wrongdoing. '

my italics

I am loving these NI-related statements - how dumb do they think we are? why did you sign the cheques if you didn't know what they were for, buddy? eh? eh? Grin

Ponders · 17/07/2011 20:38

is that next Friday, kitten? that was my inclination too...

bkgirl · 17/07/2011 20:38

Dear goodness, why do I still feel a cover up is going on? I wonder what mps took gifts or stays in Champneys or News International.

FoundWanting · 17/07/2011 20:42

I'm going for 28th July, but suggest that there will be calls for a vote of no confidence at the end of this week.

TheRealMBJ · 17/07/2011 20:42

I know that those sort of sums are small change for the likes of Murdoch however no businessman signs any cheque for anything unless they know exactly what it is for and feels the expense justified.
