story??? just found the story here .

Some of the commments from people about the story (which they apparently had at lunchtime too) were absolutely shocking - "it's disgusting" were among ones that stuck out at me. Not wanting to get into a huge breast/bottle/formula advertising debate about it (as I'm going to work tonight so won't be around to partcipate until tomorrow afternoon/evening.

But I'm sure it's attitudes like that which have a bigger impact on a woman's decision to breastfeed, than some formula advertising.

bamboo · 22/11/2005 10:38

Thanks for the link - listening now.

georginars · 22/11/2005 10:39

they might be calling me back. don't know if I sounded interesting enough though!

Bozza · 22/11/2005 10:43

(BTW QOQ I fed DD when I went to see my great-aunt in her nursing home and none of the old dears realised what was happening - "is he asleep" etc).

I once fed DD in an italian restaurant and the waiters wanted me to stop...so they cuddle DD(strange but true).
I had to ask them to wait until after the feed.

I think it was wrong to pass on the complaint to the woman but I don't think the PC was exactly harrassing her was he/she? How do we know this wasn't a probationer who just thought they were doing the right thing by passing it on?

A bit annoying but I don't think we need to bay for blood exactly! This is one PC that made a mistake - the next PC may have told the complainant to bog off!

georginars · 22/11/2005 10:48

I don't think we need to bay for the PC's blood, but we do need to address why the public feel the need to make a complaint!

Indeed.

teabags · 22/11/2005 10:50

I'm listening too. Someone said to me recently, when I told them I lack confidence BF in public, that "BF is like S*x. We all know it's perfectly natural and it goes on, but no one wants to see it". That gave me such a confidence boost!

Not the individual police officer, agreed GDG, as you say it might have been an inexperienced probationer or Community Support Officer. But I think Norfolk Constabulary do need to investigate why the mother felt the police intervention was embarassing and inappropriate, as opposed to supportive and helpful.

hunkermunker · 22/11/2005 10:56

It's because we have a weird hang-up about tits in this country.

Perhaps I'll make a film called Carry On Breastfeeding and it'll have '50s policemen nudging each other and winking (I said winking) when they see a fresh-faced young mum getting her norks out on a sunny day to feed her baby on a park bench.

Cue Benny Hill-esque music as old ladies and random mutterers of nork-related disgust run round the bench, waving furled umbrellas (mad, as a sunny day, but these are nork-frenziers, so obv mad and is a symbol to show them as such).

What happens next?

teabags · 22/11/2005 10:59

also, the irony of BF is that initally there is a huge pressure on mothers to BF. My hospital really pushed it. There was no help or talk with bottle feeding at all. But if you succeed at BF, there's no congrats..... it seems the whole world wants to know when you're going to stop!

moondog · 22/11/2005 11:00

It involves education-pure and simple.

The complainant is free to think what she likes, but the PC should be sorted enough to know that this 'complaint' needs to have been ignored.

Analogy is ignorant (in true sense of the word) people in Wales, complaining about others speaking Welsh. Much as I would like to instantly reduce their homes and businesses to a heap of ashe,it isn't the way.
They need to understand something about the history and politics of this part of the world to grasp the utter crassness of their comments.

To be fair,most then do.

hunkermunker · 22/11/2005 11:02

Sorry, people in Wales speak Welsh? What kind of lunacy is that?!

handlemecarefully · 22/11/2005 11:04

handlemecarefully · 22/11/2005 11:11

Please relay what is said - we couldn't pick up the frequency on our office radio and can't seem to listen to it over the internet either (at work - so probably something to do with work pc's etc)

georginars · 22/11/2005 11:12
