yes, just heard from a friend in the US. If its true, then wow. This man changed the world forever. All those people whose lives have been altered/ruined/ended prematurely.

CheerfulYank · 02/05/2011 04:20

I am glad. And sad that I'm glad.

And worried about retaliation.

What the news is saying right now in the US is that Bin Laden was killed last week by a US special forces ground attack in Pakistan but was kept secret until now because they were waiting for DNA confirmation that it was really him. That's just what I'm hearing right now, can't vouch for the accuracy.

CheerfulYank · 02/05/2011 04:30

Yeah, who knows! :)

Also says the US military is in possession of his body.

Tbh I am freaking out a little at the thought of what retaliation may be coming if any of this is true.

Viagrafalls · 02/05/2011 04:32

Oh, I didn't even think about the retaliation. I hope not.

There will be somebody else to carry on their 'battle' 100%.
Him dying will satisfy lots of people temporarily but it will be short lived. Sad but true. This is life now with these threats and I don't think it will ever change Sad

thumbwitch · 02/05/2011 04:38

Classic quote on the ABC news here in Australia - "how will the loss of Osama bin Laden affect the terrorist organisation plans?"
As though the bloke she was talking to knew the answers!

I'm not sure which is more worrying - this or the Libya situation. Neither are good.

And they think that a recent suicide bomber in Afghanistan was as young as 12 - that's just tragic.

I agree, Lula. I just said the same to DH.

Obama is addressing the nation at this moment. He sure is giving away a hell of a lot of information about exactly how he was found and killed.

CheerfulYank · 02/05/2011 04:44

I'm scared. :(

Me too, CheerfulYank. Everyone on my facebook is blowing it up with victory shouts etc. And I just feel frightened of what psycho nutjob will step into bin Laden's shoes and decide to avenge him.

The news anchor just said "This event is a bookend. A terrible chapter is finished". WTF? What if they start a whole new book, you moron?!

thumbwitch · 02/05/2011 04:51

about an hour ago, DH was speculating on what Obama was going to be addressing the USA about; he has heard something about Donald Trump accusing Obama of not being born in the USA, which is supposed to be a requirement of his Presidency, isn't it?

But then we heard the news about bin Laden and realised that would be the content of the address.

DoubleNegativePanda · 02/05/2011 04:52

I am not unhappy or upset he's gone, because the havoc and devastation he wreaked was horrific. But it seems very short-sighted to think "Oh, that's over then."

thumbwitch · 02/05/2011 04:52

let's face it - he wasn't the sole orchestrator, was he - the rest of Al Qaeda are hardly going to throw their hands up in the air and say "well lads, that's it then - he's dead, we might as well all give up and go home now", are they.

Retribution is quite likely to be severe, I would think - but it may not be as well-organised.

MollyMurphy · 02/05/2011 04:52

Good riddence to bad rubbish.

NotTheOneWhoIsntTheOtherOne · 02/05/2011 04:56

I think it was Lucas North what done it.

Thumbwitch yes it is a requirement. Up until last month the governor of Hawaii maintained that if Obama had been born in that state, his birth certificate had been lost. Last week, the "long form" certificTe of his birth was found. Who knows, really. Since before he was elected there has been speculation about it.

CheerfulYank · 02/05/2011 04:58

Yes thumb, crazy people have always said that Obama was not born in the US, even though he clearly was. (John McCain actually wasn't born in America, but they leave that part out Hmm ) Anyway, Obama's shown his birth certificate before, and both of Hawaii's major papers show his birth announcement in 1961, but that's not enough for some people. In response to Trump he released a more formal birth certificate and Trump said "Today I'm very proud of myself, because I've accomplished something that no one else has been able to accomplish," even though you've been able to view Obama's birth certificate online for three years .

I swear, if Trump gets elected President, I'm coming to live with you guys until it's all over.

See, everyone reports different stuff. I'm probably spouting rubbish.

Trump for president? There's a truly scary thought.
