great story

Isn't it brilliant, a fabulous story that I can't remember being on the front page of any Newspaper.

I'd just like to add a :) at the OP

Heart-warming story. Good to see Egyptian government is protecting churches, too. (Although IIRC isn't the Egyptian government a trifle tough on its own people? I may have this wrong...)

BeenBeta · 15/01/2011 09:57

I'm wondering if there migt be something else ot this story too. The political situation is North Africa is very tense at the moment with food riots in various countries and the President of Tunisia fled the country yesterday.

These sort of silent protests where the population comes together ostensibly over an unrelated issue often lead to other more overtly political gatherings.

slim22 · 15/01/2011 11:33

Very good point Beta. Unlikely to see Egypt following Tunisia's path though

bathbuns · 15/01/2011 17:51

I have started watching Al Jazeera occasionally, where you are more likely to see stories such as the one linked to by the OP. I find it really fascinating. Not only do you get lots of different stories that aren't really making the UK news (or if they are, they make very little impact) but if you have any lurking fear of teh mooslims you get to see that they are just people. As Riven said, most people, whatever their religion, are just trying to get by. A very small percentage are extremists.

Compfan, I really recommend you spend a bit of time watching Al Jazeera. You would learn a lot.

ivykaty44 · 15/01/2011 18:09

compfan are you daft punk?

the story you linked to about christians being perscecuted - they have all been stories in the UK press

the story about the gravestones and rest in peace - you see the church sold out on those buried there - this is something that churches do to make money, they are sometiems sold and converted into homes for all sorts of people to live in and then the graves become the property of an indervidual- yes the graves have been sold twice, once to the person wishing to be buried there and then again as a plot of land to go with the church. that is who you should be asking why they sold out - not the people that purchased the land. An awful practice by the christian church which should be banned

SummerRain · 15/01/2011 18:37

Having lived in Ireland during the latter years of the troubles I find the notion of Christians as peaceful folk respectful of others beliefs rather laughable tbh.

Throughout history Christianity has committed countless atrocities against other faiths and belief systems. Of course two wrongs don't make a right and this does not validate Muslim extremists in any way but it pays to remember that extremists are labelled such for a reason... they do not represent the ideals and beliefs of all Muslims.

Thank you for the link OP... I hadn't seen anything about this on the news either. Really lovely story.

BeenBeta... Egypt has a rather dubious past politically in that region, they have always been quick to defend their rights to water resources and have used quite unethical means to ensure that the upstream Nile riparian nations were politically destabilised and unable to finance projects like the Ethiopian Lake Tana Dam. The also gave financial and military aid to the Eritreans and Somalis as it was in Egypt's best interest that those wars continued as long as possible. I'm not convinced that long enough has passed since some of these incidents for Egypt to gain 'greater political freedom' as you suggest.

I've seen plenty of al jazeera footage around the time of the Iraq invasion. They aren't squeamish and show plenty images of multilated children as a result of our bombings.

I have a clear conscience as I don't vote for war criminals and war mongers. LibLabCon voters have the blood of thousands of innocent civillians on their hands. Its sick, and you all voted for them afterwards as well, even once pictures were shown of the devastation you caused, resulting in further billions being wasted on war and death, now the bill has arrived and they'll be cutting your services soon. TOUGH!!!!!!!!

It's a shame a British National Party govt had not been in power. They are totally against globalist wars, being nationalists they don't beleive in meddling in other countries affairs. There would also still be tens of thousands of Iraqis and Afghanis still alive enjoying life with their families rather than be dead!

SHAME ON YOU ALL.

We'd also have about 15 billion pounds in the coffers instead of debt so we could pay for life saving operations and education rather than to ahve waste it on death, destruction and disablement of people thousands of miles away. AND YOU CALL THE BNP STUPID!!!!!!!!!!!!????????????

compfan · 16/01/2011 18:17

Riven you have blood on your hands, along eith all the other liblabcon voters so spare the lecture.

Thanks OP - it is good to hear something about moderates doing something rather than extremists. Lets hope we hear more such stories (a) because they are happening and (b) that the media reports them.

compfan · 16/01/2011 18:41

Fair enough Riven, you're conscience is clear, unlike the rest of the war voters on these boards.

(Although there is of course nothing 'green' about their open door policy on immigration, which is concreting over our wonderful countryside, putting pressure on our river systems and landfill.)

SummerRain - I didnt know that Egypt had intervened in such an adverse way across the region (except the invasion of Israel).

I was reading a bit more today about the unrest that might potentially erupt across N. Africa and the Arab world lead by angry young people sick to death of corruption and lack of opportunities under oppressive regimes. The internet and satellite TV is a big factor in spreading it beyond what Govts can control.

Who knows, but there could be regime change everywhere in that region quite soon and for the better- hopefully replaced by something better even if not perfect.

Interesting times.

GrimmaTheNome · 16/01/2011 18:51

Compfan, don't be so bloody ridiculous - we don't get to vote on single issues.Hmm

compfan · 16/01/2011 19:06

Is that your excuse is it. As I say blood of innocent people on all your hands.

Just because you want to have your own country, doesnt mean you want to see other people in theirs get their families butchered using our taxes.

These LibLabCon voters are so sick and twisted. To vote for them after what they have done at such a great cost in blood and money is really really disgusting.

compfan · 16/01/2011 19:16

Riven

Are you mad, it's the empire that has caused a lot of our problems!! When we gave the empire back we thought we were getting rid of you all, you wanted independence. It wasn't in the deal that you all would follow us home. Strange considering you hated us and wanted rid of evil whitey. Strange really, coming to a white country then screaming racism all the time, when you could have lived in a white free paradise, but then you would have no-one to blame when things don't work out.
