Sexual exploitation of teenagers by (mainly) Asian gangs

hundreds of young girls are being groomed and prostituted by gangs according to an investigation by The Times]] Only the gangs are predominantly Asian men so the authorities have been very reluctant to either talk about it or act - even now the Home Office 'has no plans' to do any research into the pattern of offending, despite a request by the safeguarding children's board in Derby, backed by Barnardos. Former MP Ann Cryer has been campaigning on this for years but was shouted down with cries of 'racism'.

Afraid Times is now behind a paywall so can't link to the full story but if you have access, it's here down the page under 'UK news'.

Strikes me that the racists here are the officials who are afraid to uphold the law or to talk about this. And that it's yet another example where racism trumps misogyny.

There have been some prosecutions - 56 men convicted in 17 cases. But sounds as if the Home Office doesn't want anyone to find out if the problem is far more widespread.

So with giveitago - WTF does it matter if society has become sexualised - how women dress on tv or in the streets??? Sorry but this is the start of its ''women'' fault for being raped etc and general sexist crap. Not all men go around brutalising these young women, it is infact a very small minority.

Its the attitude that unless you are wearing a burqa you are fair game. That women are responsible for mens response to them

MissQue · 08/01/2011 18:21

Bloody hell, the BNP are getting their messages across aren't they Sad Do you all REALLY think that it is only Asian men who are abusing children and exploiting women? Really???? Because I can tell you now, it's bloody well NOT! There are paedophiles and abusers in every walk of life, and nobody would say that all white men are going to abuse our children and beat women, are they? FFS!

I live in an area where there are relatively low numbers of Asian people around and there are STILL problems with abuse, prostitution, paedophilia and drugs. Not from Asian men, from young white men! There are gangs of disenfranchised young men in all societies who turn to trouble, and young, vulnerable women and children for them to abuse. There are also a lot of young women who are pretty evil and nasty too, it's not just men who are causing suffering.

BUT, there is also a much higher proportion of white/Asian/Black people who are simply law abiding citizens, trying to get on with their lives and making the best of it. Would you refuse treatment for your child from an Asian doctor, for instance? Would you object to your elderly relatives being cared for in a loving, safe and comfortable environment if their carers were Filipino?

I'm not saying there aren't Asian people doing bad things out there, but we need to put it into perspective and realise that we're no more likely to be raped by a Pakistani man than a white man. Really, we're not.

MargaretGraceBondfield · 08/01/2011 18:24

In my opinion if you constantly brainwash people into believing that their modest way of life trumps the society in which they live it is going to eventually have the effect, on a minority, that we can see in these cases. I've encountered more than a few Muslims who think British women are loose and up for fucking but want a modest, covered woman to marry.

TigerseyeMum · 08/01/2011 18:30

Oh great, the media have now picked up on the fact that Jack Straw has finally acknowledged the issue, and now shouts of racism and sterotyping abound

The media in this country started reporting it earlier today and I could tell from the scant, misleading way it was reported that it would escalate into a 'race row'. And it has.

We don't seem able to discuss issues of race and racism in this country without it getting hijacked. Race is certainly an issue but it has been rather badly misrepresented as usual by the mainstream media.

MissQue, I think you have been reading a different thread to me, I didn't see anyone saying 'all Asians were rapists' or that white males don't rape. I think what has been said is that (gasp) racism can work both ways and that some sections of male Asian society can have a racist attitude towards white girls, as well as aspects of the culture that may clash with aspects of current British (sexualised) culture, and the furthermore action taken to address this issue has to be hushed up to prevent people crying 'racist'. Which you just have Hmm which might prove the point a little...

MissQue · 08/01/2011 18:30

But British men are the same, they go after the 'slags' for their fun, but want to settle down with a 'nice' girl who will behave herself!

reelingintheyears · 08/01/2011 18:31

MissQue...i have never read any BNP literature.
I have only read the national papers and wtched the News.
I believe that most people are just trying to get on with their lives.

Where does the BNP come into this?

I certainly haven't just cried racist, my point is that there are people with shitty attitudes in every walk of life, and it IS unfair to single out people of one particular race or culture as being responsible.

TigerseyeMum · 08/01/2011 18:34

Oh, I say this by the way as a white female who suffered years of racist abuse whilst living in a predominantly Asian suburb, yet was told again and again that 'I must be mistaken' as Asian people cannot be 'racist' towards a white person, or that racism is white people against other ethnic groups, or that perhaps the young males mistook me for a prostitute because of how I was dressed and that it why they used to spit at me and verbally threaten me in the street.

But whatever was happening, I was definitely NOT being racially abused, m'kay? I was told this by the self-defined 'community leaders' that I met a couple of years later.

We really, really need to acknowledge that we have many cultures living in this country and that tensions can and do arise, and we need to be able to speak of it too without being shouted down as racists. If we can;t do that it allows a wide open doorway for the BNP to come through.

"Would you refuse treatment for your child from an Asian doctor?"

No, because I am not saying anything against Asian men, I am saying there is a recognised issue here that needs to be out in the open.

reelingintheyears · 08/01/2011 18:37

The point is what is in the news.
Asian guys are in the news as offenders.
Why is that singling them out?

MargaretGraceBondfield · 08/01/2011 18:38

No MissQ, Asian men are looking for women upon the basis of race.

kelway · 08/01/2011 18:41

cultural differences. a women living in ie pakistan generally behaves in a different way and is seen differently in direct comparison to ie a western women living in europe. a man brought up in pakistan who then comes to ie the UK to live would be shocked to see the way women in the uk on the whole behave, who could blame them, just as i would be surprised to see how the women live in ie Tehran. just a thought. still doesn't justify the behaviour of a few but possibly the thoughts of many. all about lack of trust on both sides down to lack of social cohesion, this frustrates me no end

giveitago · 08/01/2011 18:41

That's the attitude of men from many countries to british women based on their experiences of young british women having a holiday in their country (nice article about Spanish men being sniffy about british women as they think we're all carrying HIV). But again it's a male view that women 'are asking for it' - women that are young, wearing revealing clothes, like to engage with men and like a drink.

We haven't come that far. It's not the start of it's women at fault - it's a continuation of how women have been viewed for years.

We are talking about specific cases not the general misery of the world.

raspberryroo · 08/01/2011 18:50

Riven - men treated women badly way before TV and I'm sorry to say a lot of Muslim countries treat women like shit even though they have little to no TV and certainly no western TV. I don't remember seeing the Taliban in the X factor audience.

Following on from Riven's point, just look at the effect of porn and objectification in music.....it's getting worse, there's more and more impact on young people everyday.

I totally think the rules of Islam do fit in well here, the opposing culture of sexualised Britain and modest, covering Islam both oppress women, in my view. And so the covered woman is viewed as some sort of trophy, she must hide her hair and body....against the flesh showing 'tee hee I'm a pissed slag, empowered by stripping' type attitude....it just doesn't mix.

kelway · 08/01/2011 18:54

i get shocked when i am at the gym in the morning to the music videos. and i ain't no prude, i have had a colourful life and look the opposite of how one might picture me from my disapproval of these female modern images. these videos are short of pornography some of them, they are so bloody boring as one female singer after the other is wearing a uniform of not much, gyrating to the same sort of shite and each trying to out do each other. i have never like that music scene, not my thing at all, the dance scene in my eye has always been about 'sexual attaction without love', wham bam thank you mam although these days not even with a 'thank you'

MissQue · 08/01/2011 18:58

For me it's about acknowledging that there are people out there who are vulnerable and need protecting. It's about misogyny rather than race, it's about the attitudes of many cultures against women in general. And for us as parents, it is about equipping our children with the confidence and intelligence to avoid falling for the sort of manipulation which ends in them being abused. Not just locking them up for their own protection (or making them wear modest clothing), but making sure that they are aware of what goes on and how to avoid it. It's being able to take care of ourselves, and to speak up if bad things happen to us. It's about fighting the attitudes of the ones who are reluctant to change, because change is needed. It's about bringing our boys up to respect women, and to challenge those who don't, regardless of race. It's about taking responsibility for our own actions, and making them an example to others.

kelway · 08/01/2011 18:58

even bloody Hamley's has a nail bar now, a bloody NAIL BAR and 'bling' section, it made me feel physically sick when i first saw this, made me want to boycott the place. why not go the full hog and have a bloody tattoo parlour and piercing studio as well

raspberryroo · 08/01/2011 19:02

So a 9 year old painting her nails is ''sexualised'' but being circumcised and forced to marry an much older man at 14 is ok?

Western society may not be perfect but I so know where I would prefer my Dd to grow up - fe

MargaretGraceBondfield · 08/01/2011 19:09

How can a man respect an uncovered woman when he places a woman's value on her ability to be modest? The Koran practically instructs this attitude. All about closer to God.....
