story here

This really shocked me.

Do you think you get to the point in being so rich you really think you can buy anything?

That family must have been devestated enough at loosing everything without someone trying to buy their daughter.

And £1,500? when he has £130million?

It was just horrible.

I think you're right claig....he's subversive afterall.

Awitch · 22/10/2010 20:06

HAHAHAHA he's not subversive, he's a piss-taker on COMIC RELIEF. he's funny and clever, but in a terribly obvious way for the most part. so he says 'black people are stupid' or whatever racist crap he used to come out with on the 11 o clock show, but we know that in fact he is the idiot. same here, he's laughing at people who are so cynical as to prat aobut complaining about celebs who do charity work 'for the publicity' while READING THE PUBLICITY and generating more publicity.

do you honestly think bono and geldof think what they do is a craven attempt to garner publicity, and took part in the sketch on that basis? hardly.

this is not to say that people don't do things for publcity, btw, or that there cannot be a win win at times (witness itn fc no doubt loving the fact that caan meant airtime), but it is just cringeworthy to propose that gervais is seriously putting forward a subversive line ON THE PROGRAMME, WHILE ASKING FOR MONEY. he was poking fun, yes, but at you.

claig · 22/10/2010 20:15

I think Bono and Geldof are so chuffed to be asked to do one of his sketches that they would do anything for it. Gervais knows that and makes use of it. He is subversive and he was also taking the piss out of the whole concept. He can do it and get away with it because of who he is.

Awitch · 22/10/2010 20:22

lol, okaaaay. Grin i can see that bono and geldof need the gervais imprimatur. lol.

PosieComeHereMyPreciousParker · 22/10/2010 20:42

I think Bono and Geldof are probably above the joke, don't you? I would imagine it's a little dig at Ricky himself and how he wouldn't do a charidee thing, and not for a minute do I think the only joke was on the public....in fact I think we were in on it.

Awitch · 22/10/2010 20:44

you need to speak to claig about that, not me.

PosieComeHereMyPreciousParker · 22/10/2010 20:48

I'm getting ready for the feminist conference now and so I'm far too excited for this!!!!GrinSmile

I'm packing my bag in front of an Idiot abroad...is it wrong to love that program?

Awitch · 22/10/2010 20:49

yes. it really is.

Awitch · 22/10/2010 20:49

enjoy the conf! Grin and Envy

claig · 22/10/2010 20:52

Well this is all getting very interesting. Gervais wrote the script and told them what to do. They obviously understand that he is taking the piss out of celebs, but they don't mind and they are prepared to take the piss out of themselves. All in all, it is a great sketch that takes the piss out of celebs and the concept. We recognise the joke (apart from Awitch), understand it, laugh at the celebs and laugh at ourselves for going along with the process. Then we phone up and contribute to the cause. Everyone's a winner and Gervais has done a great sketch.

claig · 22/10/2010 20:53

Have a good time Posie Smile

Awitch · 22/10/2010 20:55

oh sorry, i thought you were saying earlier that he was making something that was 'worth a viewing', as opposed to a joke. what was the serious point he was making again? that geldof, like james caan Hmm, is only in it for the publicity?

claig · 22/10/2010 20:59

Jokes are worth a viewing. It is very clever and an excellent sketch. The serious point he is making is that celebs use these appeals for their own publicity, as Jamie Oliver says "I've haven't been seen on TV caring about anything for 3 days now". As long as you laughed at it, that's good enough.

PosieComeHereMyPreciousParker · 22/10/2010 21:02

Nooooooooo. (to Aitch)

Awitch · 22/10/2010 21:10

oh claig. such a simplistic reading...

claig · 22/10/2010 21:13

Ok, well as long as we both laughed that's OK.

PosieComeHereMyPreciousParker · 22/10/2010 21:54

Claig, I think you're right and you too Awitch.

[runs back to fence.]

claig · 22/10/2010 21:57
