Oh ffs I am off. How many times. IF SHE HAD NOT GOT THROUGH THE GATE, SHE WOULD HAVE BEEN BITTEN, IT WAS INCHES FROM HER LEGS, SHE ESCAPED IT, END OF. The police were called and warned the owner if there was one more instance of it being even OFF THE LEASH the RSPCA had the powers to take it. It was Rottie and in Norfolk.

GOOD NIGHT

Vallhala · 02/09/2010 23:29

No problem Fimbo, I understand now. :)

Still interested if your "fuck the bloody dogs" relates to those involved in the attacks or dogs in general.

Nancy66 · 02/09/2010 23:31

Val - I can spot the difference between a staffordshire bull terrier and an illegal pitbull - the area of London I live in has many illegal pitbulls - the police have admitted this to me.

If I see a snarling, illegal pitbull pulling at its chain, attempting to jump up at anything that passes it and being handled by a couple of gormless 'gang' types - then, yes, i would consider that a dangerous dog..

Fimbo · 02/09/2010 23:31

Those involved in the attacks.

No Beer they are not. My ds is terrified, he was only 4 at the time (now nearly 6) and prior to this was ok. Ironically my dd now wants a dog!

Fimbo · 02/09/2010 23:34

oops he is nearly 7!

bluefinger · 02/09/2010 23:35

I actually love dogs, wish I had one. But there are lots of people out there who own dogs and are twats. I was in the chip shop today with a dog that looked really vicious, fair enough the owner said it was harmless, but it was getting into my childrens faces and sniffing my pram. I was uneasy and told my children to back away.

The owner gave me a dirty look as if I was doing something wrong. Big dog, scary looking jaws, lax owner =disaster in my book. I went outside.

I don't like any dog just let off the leash and left to explore other peoples things.

Vallhala · 02/09/2010 23:36

:o PMSL with Beer.

Let's get rid of the vets, behaviouralists and rescues, we now have a Pit Bull expert in our midst!

Nancy66 · 02/09/2010 23:41

that's the problem bluefinger - every dog owner in history claims their dog is harmless. The owner of the dog that attacked me said that - 'totally out of character' apparently.

I believe the owner of the rottweiler that attacked the kid in Scotland said it was out of character - except he was lying and the dog had done it before.

...oh and all dog owner's clean up their dog's shit as well - so god knows where those piles of crap I have to navigate around every day come from.

Vallhala · 02/09/2010 23:42

Blue, you weren't doing anything wrong by telling your DC to back away, that's your perogative. Man was sniffy and silly to think otherwise.

BUT... a dog that "looks" really vicious does not a vicious dog make and it's this idea that causes people like me to have so many unwanted dogs to find rescue for.

I have 3 big dogs - my B&T GSD is HUGE and he has "scary looking jaws".

He lives with 2 children, 2 other dogs, 3 cats and a pet ferret, the latter of which he is terrified of!

Fimbo, am worried now you have got DSs age wrong... I called DD1 (15) my 14 yo recently. I put it down to my age, I bet you can't use that excuse! :o :o :o

I put it down to the children Vallhala, I was ok until they appeared. Memory is now like a sieve.

hmc · 02/09/2010 23:46

"I have been bitten once in between 35 and 50 years.
Sense of proportion, anyone?"

Know what you mean - I haven't been bitten at all in 42 years....

Poor little girl in the newspaper report - I agree to an extent that it is the training not the breed, but I am not utterly convinced when it comes to Akita's which were bred as fighting dogs. There are some breed characteristics which are immutable.

However - the anti-dog brigade are hysterical and I really do try to take you seriously but simply cannot. I think it might be because some of you live in 'de ghetto' (by which I mean London / other big cities) where you have the rich tapestry of human life (by which I mean the asocial / ammoral / poorly educated )and perhaps you encounter a disproportionate number of irresponsible dog owners - however here in the provinces it is quite different.

Vallhala · 02/09/2010 23:49

Oh god, tell me about it Fimbo. I'm now going into rooms with a purpose, stopping in the middle and thinking, "What the HELL did I come in here for!". :o

Fimbo · 02/09/2010 23:53

I certainly do not live in the "de ghetto". Shock

Oh I do that too, Vallhala. I even came out of work at 1.30 remembering I had a dentist appointment at 2.00, went into a shop and it went completely out of my mind. Didn't dare ring the dentist for weeks afterwards, I was soooo embarrassed.

edam · 03/09/2010 00:00

So it's 'hysterical' to think dogs shouldn't be allowed to attack innocent passers by, is it? Hmm

The people with the attitude problem are the ones who think everyone else has to put up with dog attacks because dogs are so lovely and the occasional injury doesn't really matter because it's the owner that's to blame.

ShinyAndNew · 03/09/2010 00:16

Hmc I hope you are not trying to blame Akitas as a breed? Did you know that years ago women in Japan would leave their babies in the care of Akitas while they went out to work the fields? The Akita is the Japanese version of the SBT aka the nanny dog.

My own was found trying revive my mums kittens after they were killed by a feral she took in (before the kittens were born) by copying the mother cat and gently licking them.

They are huge and they need a firm hand. They can be stubborn and dominant and are not for the faint of heart. But in the hands of an experienced owner they are wonderful dogs.

hmc · 03/09/2010 00:23

Well - I am prepared to bow to your superior knowledge on this one. You probably know a great deal more about them than I do. Having quickly googled it seems that there is a tendancy for Akitas to be aggressive toward other dogs, but not so for people

Vallhala · 03/09/2010 00:24

Erm... hands up those who have said that everyone has to put up with dog attacks.

HMC, so your point only serves to agree with my own. After all, Rotts, who were yesterday being deemed dangerous dogs by some are, like another sometimes feared breed, the GSD, a herding breed, NOT a fighting breed.

It demonstrates that it is not just entirely unreasonable but ILLOGICAL to demand further BSL or to support that which is already in place.

We have a law which can impound and kill dogs who have done no harm not only on just their breed but on their looks and bodily measurements - ie not size but leg length and muzzle length.

If that applied to (dangerous ground here I know) black men because some murder or Japanese women because some commit infanticide all hell would break lose.

'Because if you have, you might like to consider how many beaten, scarred, broken limbed, starved and neglected dogs I have seen and worked with. It works both ways, sadly, and it is then that I adopt the view, "Fuck the humnans".;

But these injuries and brutalities are usually caused by dog owners to their own dogs.
Not random passers-by.
