'And educate your children on how to behave around dogs. Even if you don't have one. They will still encounter them every day. It makes sense that they know how to behave around them.'

Shiny, how would you have suggested the girl who was dragged from her bicycle by the two rottweilers behaved then?

Beer, matey, what struck me as interesting was that yesterday's ignorant posts came from people calling Rotts "dangerous", as ever blaming the breed not the deed.

Yet today's tragic but remarkably rare incident was committed not by a Rott, but an Akita. Which kinda serves to prove one of my many points about BSL and the idiots who call for it.

I am furious to have read this about yesterday's incident:

"Tayside Police are carrying out inquiries and have traced the two dogs, and a puppy of a different breed that was also present, and confined them to kennels.

It is understood that the animals' owner has given permission for them to be put down"

(BBC report).

So a puppy, who was not involved, was impounded by the Police. On what effing grounds?

And from the sound of it a perfectly innocent puppy will die.

BEFORE anyone comes back with "Oh stuff the puppy, what about the child, you care more about dogs than humans", let me get in there first.

I am NOT making light of the child's injuries but am talking about a completely seperate issue.

And (arrogant head on here), yes I do bloody well know what I'm talking about, with more experience than than most on here, as my posts on yesterday's incident shows fairly comprehensively. I still challenge anyone to match that experience or beat it with fact rather than just opinion and continue to bow down to those who do have greater knowledge and expereince of working with all manner of dogs and I don't claim to be the only or the best person of my kind.

And yes, I do prefer dogs to a hell of a lot of people and have never denied that.

Christ on a bike - have you two (yes you Val and Beer) even looked at the poor kids injuries. Fuck the bloody dogs

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 02/09/2010 23:05

BTP - "I don't need to be forced to train her." No, didn't mean to suggest that you personally did, it's just that your idea about compulsory training would be unacceptable to many.

Have no doubt that responsible dog-owners are the majority, but it's kind of hard for the man in the street to tell the difference between responsible/irresponsible at a casual glance, no?

Fimbo · 02/09/2010 23:09

And furthermore I sincerely hope you or your child is never chased by a dog and been scared out of your wits because me and mine have. I had to make the hideous choice between trying to save my ds who was on his bike and the THING would have got his face or my daughter who at worst would have had her legs mauled (both were on bikes). No I bet neither of you have and don't give me that claptrap about teaching your kids not to be scared, when a THING about twice the size and weight is growling, snarling and then chasing after you, you hardly have a moment to stop and think. My dd only escaped because she managed to get into our gate, thankfully at that point the stupid bloody owner appeared, oh yes and what did they say oh yes the usual dollop of tripe "she wouldn't harm them". Dream on

My daughter only just managed to escape from it. People like you make me hysterical you really don't give a damn.

Vallhala · 02/09/2010 23:13

Fimbo, have you seen my posts on the other thread, where I give some info on my experience and background?

Because if you have, you might like to consider how many beaten, scarred, broken limbed, starved and neglected dogs I have seen and worked with. It works both ways, sadly, and it is then that I adopt the view, "Fuck the humnans".

Your, "Fuck the bloody dogs" - the dogs in question, or ANY dogs?

I repeat, I am not making light of the child's injuries but was referring to a seperate issue, that of calls for further BSL whilst trying to counter ignorance on the matter with fact, borne out of a lot of experience and backed up by experts.

For every one sad attack there are thousands of well behaved large breeds living in family homes tonight, including my 2 German Shepherds and my Lab cross.

Fimbo · 02/09/2010 23:14

And you are the ridiculous one not me, until you have been there don't you be so ridiculous.

I've lost count of the number of times i've called the police and parks police about out of control dogs.

I even saw my MP about it.

Vallhala · 02/09/2010 23:17

Fimbo, my children both regularly help out at a rescue where they interact with approximately 98% of the dogs there, including Rotts (one of whom is DD1s favourite) and bull breeds.

Val we have argued before on this. You have your opinion I have mine. I was put in a quite frankly horrible horrible position, there is no question that if the dog had managed to catch my daughter it would have bitten her. It makes me mad. Sorry but children come before dogs. A little bit of compassion for things that have happened to others in real life wouldn't go amiss.

Vallhala · 02/09/2010 23:19

Nancy, I might call the Police about you tonight.

There's nothing stopping me. even if I'm not justified in doing so.

So, in whose opinion are the dogs in your local park dangerous?

What makes these dangerous in your opinion?

Fimbo · 02/09/2010 23:19

No it wasn't your dog but hey it was my children. Do you care, no of course you don't. But hey there's a surprise.

Vallhala · 02/09/2010 23:22

Fimbo, ONCE AGAIN... I am NOT making light of the child's injuries.

I have never ever stated that I have no compassion for a victim of this sort though I admit I'd have none for the person bitten because he kicked a dog.

So please stop trying to make me out to be someone I'm not.

And as for your comment "in real life"... WTF?

Are you suggesting that what I have seen and experienced from the other side of the coin is not real?

Have I lied anywhere here?

Nancy66 · 02/09/2010 23:23

Vallhala - don't be moronic.

I've reported illegal dog fighting, dogs that are being trained to tear bark of trees...oh and the doberman that 'was only being friendly' when it knocked me to the ground and dislocated my shoulder.

Fimbo · 02/09/2010 23:24

I was trying to explain to you what happened to me, so used the term "real life" - sorry.

winnybella · 02/09/2010 23:26

Fimbo- no one makes light of victims of dog bites (unless, like Vallhala said, they have been maltreating them), but what is your point exactly?

Would you like to see all the dogs banned?

BitterAndTwistedChoreDodger · 02/09/2010 23:26

Oh FFS. The reason the Daily Fail et al loves to report these attacks is sensationalism.

How many children a year are tragically killed in RTA's? The reason these aren't reported in the media is they are all too common.

There are something like 6 million pet dogs in the UK. If even 5% of them were killers the dog attack stories would be a non event, from a media pov.The fact there is such a song and dance made about it and it is a news event shows it's rarity.

Most dog owners are responsible. And fwiw I have picked up my 18m DD when I have seen a 17 yo tattoed thug with a pit bull. Guess which end of the lead I didn't trust?

Vallhala · 02/09/2010 23:27

Nancy, good for you for reporting illegal dog fighting. I hope the perpetrators go down for life.

Can't comment on the Dobe, I have no idea if it was a deliberate attempt to hurt you or just bad training and over enthusiasm. Not nice either way, nor acceptable and the owner needs bringing to book.

I may be moronic in your opinion but that still doesn't answer my questions (see above).
