Rotweillors

What I can't understand (re the recent case in Dundee of a small girl being mauled by 3 rotweillors) is why we can't have a law limiting the number of these dogs people are allowed to own. I'm a dog owner, but why does anyone need/want 3 dogs, let alone rotweillors.
It would be so easy to police, rather than going on a case-by-case basis, if you had to have a license for your dog, and, in the case of dangerous breeds, had to prove your case for owning more than one (or even just one IMO).

Onager - your post is a reminder to me about the sort of people you get on the internet and in real life. Shudder.

Let me be clear about this. If your dog leaps at me I will indeed try and kill it. I offer it not as a boast because your dog may well win. (I thought it revealing that at least one poster is now picturing dogs as big powerful fighters when just a moment ago they were harmless cuddly wuddly things)

Instead I offer it as a deterrent. The next time you let your dog leap on a child and you call out "it's ok. Just keep still and it won't bite you" it may occur to you that your dog could be in danger too. This may have a better effect than asking you to consider the safty of children which wasn't really working was it.

For those most distressed by the idea of a dog being harmed. Who find the thought awful and unbearable. This is how normal people feel about children being hurt.

Onegar, you sound a great deal more violent and dangerous than any dog I've ever met, and you don't even have the excuse of irresponsible owners!

I would never wish to harm or kill either a dog or a child. Neither would most of the 'normal' people you refer to. Have you considered seeking help for your disturbingly violent urges?

One of my dogs has to be on the lead at all times and the other is well trained and wouldnt be interested in you. However I do still get children and their parents insisting on coming up to me and my dogs and getting offended when I ask them not to stroke my dog on the lead. Should I take a stick to beat them with?

Do you think it might work though, as a strategy??
Do you think dog owners will keep their pets under control, for fear they might encounter the ferocious onagar?
It might be safer to keep a careful eye on your dog, and make sure that it doesn't stray into danger.

Not me and mine, that's dog lovers bothering you and behaving inappropriately.
Go ahead, it might deter them from buying a dog and dumping it.

I think rottweiler's are lovely dogs, i have never met a bad one, i would not keep one as i wouldn't want a dog which is more powerful than me. I know someone who has 2 and they have 2 very young children, the dogs are great with the children but would never be left alone with them.

Any dog can attack its just that a rottweiler is a large strong dog that can out power a human.

I do own a dog, i have a bull terrier, she is as soft as they come and will even run away from a cat, but at the end of the day she is a dog and can not be trusted 100%, i would not leeve her alone with my children and i keep her on a lead when i'm out (mainly because people asumes she is a pit bull even though she's tiny). If at any time she showed any sign of aggresion she would be gone.

I think you should have to have a licence to keep a dog, your house should be checked out (as they do for dogs to be rehomed) and the owner should have kknowlege of dog training and the breed of dog. Maybe owners should have to take their puppies to dog behaviour classes and learn how to handle their dogs?

onagar, first you said if a dog touched you, you would kill it. now you are saying if it leapt at you, you would kill it. i sense you may have realised the ridiculousness of your intended reaction to a dog breathing near you.

My dogs don't leap but if they ever did.. i can assure you, you would not be killing my dog.

i am a staffy owning child protection social worker.

i am distressed at the thought of children or animals being hurt.

i find your attitude odd and disturbing.

Onagar, people with your attitude have every reason to be fearful.

I can well understand that you might be so if you saw me coming towards you with 2 bloody great GSDs and a Labrador. But, I must warn you, if you tried to harm one of my 3 with your stick, you would come off worse.

My dogs are fine, living as they do as family pets with 2 children and 3 cats.

It's me you'd have to worry about.

I always cross the road or keep my distance when I see a rottweiller, pitbull or any other potentially dangerous dog coming near me. If they were muzzled I would have no problem though.
