Neighbours complaining about my sons drumming

So my 9 year old son has been learning the drums for 1.5 years now. The neighbours (who made our lives hell during our extension) have complained to the council numerous times and now someone from the council is coming round to talk to us about this. We live in a detatched house, the bedroom where the drumming takes place is 3 rooms away from a brick wall then there's a gap then the neighbours house. So it's not like we're in a semi detatched house.

Does anyone know do they have a claim against us?? Does my son have to give up something he loves?? He's learning a musical instrument!! I am so stressed about this- I'm shaking as I type. I was so stressed when they were unreasonable during our extension. He plays during the day only 5-10 mins and between the times of 8am and 8pm so we're as considerate as we can be.

I'm not sure where we stand legally

OP, do you mind if I send out downstairs neighbour round? He's been practicing the same damn song for hours each night for six months now. Perhaps he and your DS could form a band.

Our neighbour drummed (badly) everyday for about 4 hours. We could hear it in the lounge and in my children's bedrooms. He started at about 4 and didn't finish till 8pm ish. It was all you could hear in my babies room. We would sit down to dinner to the sound of drumming, they would have their bath to the sound of drumming and would go to bed with it banging away.

They lived on the next street 4 doors down at the back of us.

Does that give you some idea of how truly inconsiderate it is? How far it carries?

We complained to the council and they got a letter and they didn't stop. We didn't take it further. We moved in the end.

It's AWFUL, honestly horrendous. Even in winter with all the windows and curtains shut we could hear it over the tv.

Please buy him an electric drum kit, it won't be just that one neighbour it's upsetting I absolutely guarantee it.

Drums are not the worst instrument to listen to when someone is learning, there are far worse ones. Violin, bagpipes, recorder - all worse than drums.

@sunshine05 I think you need to agree to a set time each day for your son to practice.

Hopefully the council will see it’s just this one neighbour who’s complained and with some mediation it can be sorted.

@sunshine05

coldgreybrix thanks but it is on a carpet with windows and curtains closed
That's not really sufficient. From an acoustics point of view, it would need to be a solid hard floor like concrete, not bedroom floorboards.

I had a neighbour who played his drums in the shed. Half the street could hear it. It was the most annoying thing in the world, but in fairness I didn’t report him. I don't like being that person. But I imagine the sound is driving your neighbours crazy. Sorry OP.

OP, drums are LOUD, I live in a road of detached houses, the teenager down the road (about 4 houses away) had a stint of playing the drums, fuck me they're bloody loud, we could hear every bash of the drum, it's invasive, can you really not see how this would piss off your neighbours? You've talked about your mental health and how everyone should be kind and considerate, except you're not being kind or considerate to them are you?

We have rubber pads - they make a difference

Is this a reverse?
