Neighbours complaining about my sons drumming

So my 9 year old son has been learning the drums for 1.5 years now. The neighbours (who made our lives hell during our extension) have complained to the council numerous times and now someone from the council is coming round to talk to us about this. We live in a detatched house, the bedroom where the drumming takes place is 3 rooms away from a brick wall then there's a gap then the neighbours house. So it's not like we're in a semi detatched house.

Does anyone know do they have a claim against us?? Does my son have to give up something he loves?? He's learning a musical instrument!! I am so stressed about this- I'm shaking as I type. I was so stressed when they were unreasonable during our extension. He plays during the day only 5-10 mins and between the times of 8am and 8pm so we're as considerate as we can be.

I'm not sure where we stand legally

So, you've received numerous correspondence from the council and still haven't done anything?

RandomMess · 02/10/2020 13:09

Are you not using dampeners on them? You should if only for the reason to protect your DS hearing.

My DD played for years but I insisted on an electric kit for her best of all it retained its value over 7 years!!

SoupDragon · 02/10/2020 13:11

So, what steps have you taken to reduce the noise nuisance over the 1.5 years?

redcarbluecar · 02/10/2020 13:13

See what the council say. They may agree with you that there’s no issue and then your neighbour’s options will be limited, particularly given that he won’t actually come round himself.

Port1aCastis · 02/10/2020 13:13

Praps your neighbours Human Rights to peace in their own home are being breached and they do not want have their ears assaulted by a child drumming. I'd be drumming on your door asking your ds to pipe down a bit if I were your neighbour.

WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo · 02/10/2020 13:15

My neighbor plays the drums and even tho he uses an electric set with headphones for at home I can still hear the beaters tapping. So God alone knows what your poor neighbors are putting up with. 😳

ToelessPobble · 02/10/2020 13:20

Maybe I should put you in touch with some of the asylum seekers I have worked with over the years who have experienced torture as I am sure you would have a lot in common. I'm thinking you should probably take this to the United Nations as it is such a serious breach. I would have had sympathy with your situation if you hadn't had so little regard for those who really are having their human rights breached.

ToelessPobble · 02/10/2020 13:23

Oh and I can also advise you about organisations that can help deal with PTSD if that helps.

KitchenConfidential · 02/10/2020 13:25

Saying the house opposite is fine with it is in no way comparable to how someone next door finds it.

SquishyFishy · 02/10/2020 13:29

Electric drum kit, headphones, problem solved

pinotgrigio · 02/10/2020 13:30

DD plays the drums - at home we use a digital kit with headphones.

Take a look at some of the Roland kits, they are very good.

ivfbeenbusy · 02/10/2020 13:32

When it comes to playing the drums even just playing for 10 minutes is 10 minutes too long

(And I highly doubt that's all he's playing for!)

pictish · 02/10/2020 13:36

Oh it’s a shame. Learning to play the drums is a noisy business. My bil is a drummer so dh grew up with this.
I think an electric kit with headphones is the only way forward though I can appreciate it’s not the same as bashing it out on a real kit.

KatherineJaneway · 02/10/2020 13:38

Have you tried to listen to the noise for your neighbours house? Only then will you know how intrusive it is.

rosesandcashmere · 02/10/2020 13:39

What else have they complained about regarding you specifically? It would help to know to see if this is just the straw that broke the camels back so to speak

romeolovedjulliet · 02/10/2020 13:39

just as well this isn't in aibu, op would be hung out to dry.
i'd go ape shit having to listen to drums tbh, get some electric ones and headphones.

EachPeachPearSums · 02/10/2020 13:39

My toddler has played baby shark on repeat all morning...if anyone has a human rights violation case it's me. Get an electronic kit OP. It's antisocial to let him bang away.

pictish · 02/10/2020 13:39

I’m into music enough that I’d have tolerance over this where others would not. I’m not especially noise sensitive and neither do I expect silence.

Chloemol · 02/10/2020 13:43

My neighbours so. Played the drums, we are not attached, I could hear them, in the end I had to ask him to shut the back door of his house to help stop the noise

If he wont have an electric set and headphones then you must ensure all doors and windows are shut

You are causing noise

Lockdownseperation · 02/10/2020 13:45

@BigBadVoodooHat but she didn’t have twins. Maybe the op had twins

MaMisled · 02/10/2020 13:49

Over the past 5 years, 2 of my neighbours have been playing drums. Doesn't bother me in the slightest. Live and let live.

Skyliner001 · 02/10/2020 13:50

Human rights, take a long hard look in the mirror you over privileged... I won't finish that sentence, but for goodness sake have a word with yourself.

fishywaters · 02/10/2020 13:55

Just get him an electric set and earphones. Problem sorted.

romeolovedjulliet · 02/10/2020 13:58

oh yes, live and let live and don't give a fuck about everyone else around you Hmm
Rainbowshine · 02/10/2020 14:06

Human rights are things like political prisoners being tortured, women not being allowed to have any education, governments “disappearing” any rivals.

This is not a human rights issue. Your neighbours are using the legitimate route to address an issue of the noise being made. That is being carried out by an appropriate person from your local council. If you’re creating too much noise you will be expected to act to reduce or remove the noise. If you don’t there’ll be a consequence and you’ll be made aware of that and it would follow the principle of natural justice. You’re not going to be dragged from your beds in the night and shot and left in a mass grave because you happen to believe in a certain religion or vote for a particular party.
