yes and sod the ozone layer

spookyrookie · 17/10/2009 23:05

Fortnightly and I haven't noticed any worms yet . Though I must say even with my low standards I shuddered involontarily at those who do them monthly.

Knickers0nMaHead · 17/10/2009 23:09

When I remember, have been doing it weekly for about a month, but sometimes every fortnight or even longer.

So, shock horror.

Some people need to get a grip.

Knickers0nMaHead · 17/10/2009 23:10

Those that wash bedding more than once a week, how often do you wash you sofa covers?

chegirlknowswhereyoulive · 17/10/2009 23:11

I have a washing machine. I put the stuff in, turn it on, take it out and hang it up. It doesnt take that long

But each to their own. If you prefer to leave it a few weeks who cares? I havnt always changed my bed so often. I reckon all those years of living in squats and never wahsing anything gives me loads of left over enviro points. I think I could change my bed twice a day and still not use them all up!

I do have a thing about dust mites. They cause such stress in my house I would rather kill the feckers on a hot wash than save on washing time.

I also air all beds daily and hoover them. If it helps, my DS1's bed is totally minging and its easier to chuck his duvet away than change it.

PeachesMcLean · 17/10/2009 23:22

You hoover your mattress daily????

chegirlknowswhereyoulive · 17/10/2009 23:34

Yep. If you saw the state of my DS's eczema when its bad you wouldnt think I was quite so mad

It doesnt take long. I do it with the sheet on and when I change the bed I do the bare mattress.

I have to hoover at least once a day anyway so its only an extentsion (sp) of doing the floor.

It sounds like a pain but its worth it. All the hoovering, dusting and washing really helps DS. I have it down pat by now anyway.

I only work part time so its not hard for me to do.

PeachesMcLean · 17/10/2009 23:38

Ah, that's fair enough. Sounds like hard work though. But if you can tell the difference...

Our beds are fine after a week. Seems like madness to change them then.

FishInMyHair · 17/10/2009 23:40

Every day or every other day?
Now these people must have been on the "How often do you have sex thread" and put about 5 times a day! Blimey, how dirty can you be? Do you work down a mine?

girlsyearapart · 18/10/2009 06:08

no tumble dryer but i'v e got lots of different covers so that's how I can change weekly.

And don't get chegirl started on her housekeeping regime she'll put you all to shame!

Podrick · 18/10/2009 07:52

I like pure cotton pristine ironed sheets and find polycotton a bit ewwww no matter how often you change them.
How fresh your bed stays depends on your lifestyle - do you sleep naked, are you having sex every night and day, are you eating/breast feeding in bed, do you sweat like a pig, do you air your bed each day etc
I have no doubt that some of the weekly changed beds are much less fresh than some of the fortnightly beds so it is a bit crass to judge people filthy without sniffing their sheets IMO.
The real crime is polycotton, let's be clear, not much better than 70's nylon!

TettyLouBar · 18/10/2009 11:45

Wow - I'm amazed how jittery people are about bed linen. I dont consider myself "Manky" because I change my bed every 3-4 weeks, neither do I consider myself to be on an ozone crusade.
I turn down the covers on our bed every day to air and I open the windows for fresh air.
We sleep in bed clothes not naked and we dont have a shower in our house so we bath every evening or shower at the gym. Whats the problem???

DD wears a grobag which is changed every 4-5 days depending on nocturnal events (slobber, snot, colds, dribble, sick etc), her bottom sheet is probably changed every fortnight.

Clary · 18/10/2009 12:52

worms as in threadworms - endemic in most schools.

We haven't had them for a while thank goodness.

I don't have a tumble dryer, no, dry mine on the line thanks. Does that make it OK from an environmental PoV?

TadBitStrange · 18/10/2009 13:36

Monthly, I haven't had any threadworms. Yet.

abra1d · 18/10/2009 14:25

If you have polycotton you need to wask it more than cotton. I hate the former.

TheArmadillo · 18/10/2009 14:49

I have to say eww at not changing bedding at least every week (or 10 days at a push). Ds sometimes gets changed more often if leakage.

And yes I do have a tumble dryer - but not a car, so I figure it evens out

I would love to change it everyday if I could keep up with the washing

Dp is incrediably sweaty (for a skinny person) and ds is taking after him.

How often do you wash duvet/pillows? I wash them all every couple of months except our kingsized duvet which I can't fit in washing machine.

Dp is also asthmatic though adn so I like to try and keep the dust mites down.

ceres · 18/10/2009 14:57

i change my bedding weekly.

everyone has different standards - i don't really care how often somebody else changes their bedding, they have to sleep in it not me!

what i do object to is people who think it is ok not to change bed linen between guests. i can't believe that anyone would think it ok to expect someone to sleep in sheets that have been slept in by somebody else. yuck!

abra1d · 18/10/2009 16:39

I am a top sheet user too and when you have guests they really come into their own as you only have to whisk the top sheet and bottom sheet (and pillow cases) off, and not bother about changing duvet covers.

ninagleams · 18/10/2009 17:32

I change the bed when I feel the duvet cover is boring me or when I think it's getting dirty which is definitely no more than once a month. I feel it's both detrimental to the environment and a complete waste of time to do it more often than this. I'm surprised by how many people change the covers weekly! It is nice to get into a fresh bed but not that nice.

MadHairDay · 18/10/2009 17:40

another slob here

Fortnightly

ninagleams · 18/10/2009 17:41

... my DP is asthmatic though and changing the bed puts a lot of dust into the environment so it wouldn't be a good idea to do it weekly anyway. I'd have to go round with the hoover (which is anti-allergy) afterwards and then let all the dust settle down again. Basically a waste of my weekend- my 3 month old can't stand the hoover either so I tend not to bother when we're alone during the day.

ThingOneofYourNightmares · 18/10/2009 17:53

My DH has a severe dust allergy. I hoover the bed regularly. We leave it open to air every day, with the windows open. It's that that gives the sweat a chance to dry up, not putting on fresh sheets.

My cleaner changes the beds every other week. Our bed one week, boys the next. As we have to wash ours at sixty to kill the dust mites, and then tumble dry when it's wet or it's pollen season, I think once a fortnight is enough energy use. If we have colds, we get clean pillow cases more often.

It's not skanky at all. But then again, I think changing them more than once a week (without reason) is environmentally irresponsible so I guess it's each to their own .

I get the duvets washed quite often (meant to be every three months) due to the dust allergy.

chegirlknowswhereyoulive · 18/10/2009 20:49

Just like to point out again that I am not an Anthea Turner type stepford wife. Do it cos it helps DS and admit to developing the regime when DD was ill and had no immune system.

If you saw my house you def wouldnt think I was houseproud. Tend to concentrate on dust free rather than super tidiness

whomovedmychocolate · 18/10/2009 21:02

I change the beds weekly and use cotton bedlinen (apart from DS who has silk but only because I buggered up the order ). I have a sweaty farty DH

But you need to wash your pillows and duvets too - they are really horrid if you don't. Think of the amount of slobber on your average pillow if nothing else

Crazycatlady · 18/10/2009 21:41

We change bedsheet and top pillow cases weekly, and bottom pillow cases and duvet cover fortnightly.

DD gets clean sheet every few days because she goes to bed smothered in cream for her eczema, so it gets sticky after 3 days or so.

This thread has reminded me to take our duvets and pillows to be cleaned though . Pillows normally go in the washing machine every few months but the duvet needs a clean. I've taken it to the dry cleaners before, but is a launderette better? Not sure I know where to find a launderette actually?
