Is there some trick I’m missing with this stupid food caddy??

The council have been pressuring everyone to get a food bin, so I got one (at least it was free! Well not free, my expensive council tax is paying for it 🙄).
got the little grey bin under the sink. How on earth do you stop the silky bin bags from slipping down every time you put food in it? Driving me crazy!!

Put the handles over the sides and secure with an elastic band. We’ve been doing this in Wales forever, your council sound behind the times if they are only making you recycle food waste now.

CoverLikelyZebra · 27/06/2026 22:36

You don't have to use the crappy council kitchen caddy. Use their streetside caddy and get a proper dual-wall mini bin for the kitchen that holds the bag properly.

It's a right faff. I used them for a while but they're more trouble than they are worth. I've just ended up putting all my rubbish in one bag and chucking it into the sea.

Sorry what?

I hope that’s your predictive text changing “bin” to “sea” 😂.

yes maybe I need to get a different one. The council have done them for ages but we didn’t have one when we moved in and I’ve only ordered it now. At the moment it seems more hassle than it’s worth.

I think they are being sarcastic.

Has it only recently become mandatory to recycle food waste in your local authority area? We have been recycling food waste for 20-25 years.

CupboardHinge · 27/06/2026 23:06

Ditch the council caddy an get one of these mounted inside the door under the sink. Has a lid shroud to hold the bag in place. Game changer!

Get a different caddy, tie a knot in the bag. Or like “didntlikeanyofthesuggestions”, chuck it in the sea… with the raw sewage that’s killing people and/or making them unnecessarily sick.

TallagallaPenguin · 27/06/2026 23:08

For the future - buy the larger size food caddy bags.
In general - make sure you squash the air out between the caddy bag and the sides of the bin, and tuck the edges over the top. The first few times you put stuff in there just be a bit careful and then usually they stay in place fine.

Buildingthefuture · 27/06/2026 23:12

Agree. It’s a shitty plastic thing with zero purpose or useability. However, I have multiple dogs so thankfully, very little food waste in this house, so mine is mainly ornamental!

This the larger one. Sainsburys do good biodegradable ones or the free biodegradable ones Co Op give are good.

Between the dogs, ducks, rodents and reptiles we have zero food waste!

TheSmallAssassin · 27/06/2026 23:22

Check which bags your council take, our waste goes to an anaerobic digester, not to be composted, so we are told not to use biodegradable ones as they disintegrate and are harder to pull out at the plant.

fairislecable · 27/06/2026 23:25

I also have the Joseph Joseph one it’s really such a good design and I keep mine in the fridge.

When the bag is full I put it in the chest freezer in the garage, these frozen bags are then put in the bin on collection day

This way I don’t have the smell of rotting food hanging about.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 27/06/2026 23:26

I bought a bin similar to this for food waste, hangs over the cupboard door and the lid opens either direction. It has an insert that holds the bag in.

DappledThings · 27/06/2026 23:26

We use kerbside caddy size bags in the indoor bin. Lots more room. The small ones are too small and slip down. The big ones are fine.

WonderingWanda · 27/06/2026 23:29

The bags come in different sizes, just get one bigger than you need.

TheEasterBunny3 · 27/06/2026 23:31

@user1497787065- where I live we wont have food waste picked up until the end of this year. And we can only recycle cans, aerosols, plastic bottles & paper. Nothing else can go in the recycling bin & glass you have to take yourself to the nearest glass bank in a car park!

This. We're not allowed to use biodegradable bags. DH lines ours with newspaper.

However, we generate a fair bit of food waste as we cook from scratch, and I get annoyed with the little caddy filling up too fast. It also breeds / attracts fruit flies. I prefer to just have a food waste bowl on the side and when it's full or at the end of the each day (whichever is first) I empty it straight into the outside green bin and put it in the dishwasher. So we don't bother with bags anymore.

Still don't in my neck of the woods!

tillyandmilly · 27/06/2026 23:35

Zero food waste - maybe a bit of fruit gone off but give to my sister’s tortoise!

Mygardenshedisfallingdown · 27/06/2026 23:37

Never had a food caddy told council I didn't need one because as a vegan I don't have the normal food waste, hardly have anything go out of date food wise [savvy shopper] and veg peelings go in the compost. They haven't given me one as a result.

There’s new national regulations making food waste recycling mandatory from this year.

They’ve been rolling it out over the last few months in my council and neighbouring councils, but not everyone in the area has received the food bins yet.
