How to clean shower screen

Hi, our shower screen has some horrible marks all over, it. I've attached a (rubbish) photo. It looks like it's covered in drip marks when it's dry; it actually looks better when it's wet! What can I use to clean it? I've tried the following:

Lemon juice, with and without baking powder
Vinegar, with and without baking powder
Glass cleaner
Limescale remover
Cream cleaner
Bathroom cleaner
All purpose cleaner

And none of them have touched it. What am I doing wrong?

viakal - this is limescale and scrubbing it with pumice will just damage the door!! Pumice sprayed all over and then left for a bit before scrubbing off with a sponge and dish soap will sort it

victormeldrewcantbelieveit · 18/02/2026 03:36

Barkeepers Friend! It’s the best cleaning product I’ve found.

Offcom · 18/02/2026 06:45

A fourth vote for Bar Keeper’s Friend. I stay on top of the limescale with wiping after every shower and regular Viakal but it wouldn’t budge some of the old watermarks that were really visible on the dark tiles. Bar Keeper’s Friend powder sorted it out very quickly.

Yep, better than vinegar (acetic acid) as lower pH ( stronger acid)…so worth a try on this if she’s not yet tried

for maintenance though use vinegar..a lot cheaper especially in 5L bottles I buy. Should get away with weaker acid if done every week

just need care around chrome and stainless steel with citric acid..if left for longer time undiluted can cause corroding into metal-leaves unpolished blemishes . Cover metal if leaving for 20 mins or more.

I always use diluted but thanks for the advice it’s useful to know.

Thanks for all the comments, I wasn't expecting so many! I've tried Viakal, Killrock and HG but it didn't make any difference. I've cleaned both sides but I'm sure the marks are on the shower side. I've tried the blade that somebody mentioned but again it didn't do anything. I'll try the pink stuff and citric acid and I've ordered the pumice so I'll go from there. I do wonder if the marks are etched into the glass though.

@Limehawkmoth I've tried vinegar with and without the bicarb - I also wondered if it would neutralise the acid but it was recommended on another forum and at this stage I'll try anything, ha ha! The chip shop smell can't be worse than the smell of the Killrock 😵

I can keep on top of it once it's sorted, it's just getting it sorted that's the main thing. It's been driving me mad since we moved in.

I'll try the Barkeeper's Friend as well, and I'll try the pumice in a corner in case it does scratch - the stuff I found said it was suitable for glass though so fingers crossed.

I live in a hard water area and use harpic limescale remover. The blue one. I squirt it all over the screens then foam it up with a sponge and leave for about 10 mins. Works a treat!

Don't do this if you have any stainless steel surround, it will discolour it and look awful.

HerosUncle · 17/02/2026 21:18

The limescale may have etched the glass and you can't do anything about that

I think for glass that has suffered years of abuse, which is the case of me and the OP I think, this is true. I've tried absolutely everything - wire wool, HG limescale, vinegar. Absolutely nothing shifts it.

OP if nothing shifts at all after trying much of the above then I suspect your screen is also etched permanently.

Following as I've been trying for YEARS to get marks like this off and have tried everything. The previous owner was a slattern and replacing just the doors seems impossible without taking apart the whole bathroom according to several quotes I got from shower glass enclosure companies (who provide just the glass not even tiles or builders so they have no incentive to put me off the work).

I enjoyed your use of the word “Slattern” it made me laugh 😊

Marilla1966 · 18/02/2026 08:32

Have you tried ‘0000’ steel wool? I buy it off Amazon and it is fabulous. Really soft but doesn’t scratch like a pumice stone. I often use it with Bar Keepers Friend x

I also live in a hard water area and recently bought one of these cloths theyvare fantastic no need to squeegee just wipe down after the shower. I'm not sure they will get it all off but once you've got it clean they will stop it coming back.

Any microfibre cloth works. I like these https://www.lakeland.co.uk/20976/2-e-cloth-shower-cleaning-and-polishing-cloths and before that I always squeegee it down https://www.amazon.co.uk/Leifheit-Cabino-Squeegee-Cleaning-Cubicle/dp/B0002HOUDE?source=ps-sl-shoppingads-lpcontext&ref_=fplfs&smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&th=1

I live in a hard water area but this is all I need.

E-cloth Shower Cleaning & Polishing Cloths | Lakeland

Brilliant cleaning results with no harsh chemicals. Use shower cloth to remove dirt. Buff with the glass cloth. Suction cup hook included. Great value for money, can be washed up to 300 times.

HG Limescale remover is magic. My shower looked terrible and I used HG limescale remover and mould remover and it’s like new now.

Loughrigg77 · 18/02/2026 09:24

@Marilla1966 yes I've tried steel wool, didn't help unfortunately but I'll perhaps give it a go with the Barkeeper's friend. @roses2 hope you get yours sorted. Our previous owner wasn't a slattern but she was disabled so she probably struggled.

I scrub in circles and then squeegee the lot off

SunnyspellsandScatteredshowers · 18/02/2026 09:35

Try Nanna's Secret cleaning clay from Must Have Ideas. It's great for cleaning all kinds of things but especially good in bathrooms. Lasts for ages. You might need to clean a couple of times if there's build up.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 17/02/2026 11:32

A Scrub Daddy worked incredibly well on mine, even without additional cleaning products. I’ve since stocked up, they’re amazing!

Agree! Scrub daddy with cold water and plenty of elbow!

UltraAlox5 · 18/02/2026 09:51

Ahh damn, just go to OPs comment about it possibly being etched into the glass 😓

Imtoooldforallthis · 18/02/2026 10:31

The cloths I recommended you don't need to squeegee first as they absorb all the water and you can get right into the corners - complete game changer

ukathleticscoach · 18/02/2026 10:35

Bleach and scrubbing.

Screen is easy rest a nightmare.

Peridoteage · 18/02/2026 11:47

Kilrock do very strong descalers, try the thick gel ones. You need to leave it on to dissolve.

Are you wiping the shower down properly after each use? It gets like that if you live in a hard water area and don't wipe it down after a shower.

Whatkindoffuckeryisthiss · 18/02/2026 12:00

Little white magic sponges. They lift everything!

Whatkindoffuckeryisthiss · 18/02/2026 12:15

Like these.
(clearly I had a cracking Valentine’s Day last year 😂)

Definitely Viakal, it’s brilliant.

Use a mask. It is great on limescale but not on your lungs.
