How to clean shower screen

Hi, our shower screen has some horrible marks all over, it. I've attached a (rubbish) photo. It looks like it's covered in drip marks when it's dry; it actually looks better when it's wet! What can I use to clean it? I've tried the following:

Lemon juice, with and without baking powder
Vinegar, with and without baking powder
Glass cleaner
Limescale remover
Cream cleaner
Bathroom cleaner
All purpose cleaner

And none of them have touched it. What am I doing wrong?

Once clean, spray with white vinegar undiluted, and leave for 30 mins, then micro abrasion scrubber pad and cif or similar will keep on top of it. Might need to open window if you don’t want chip shop smell 🤷‍♀️😉

dont use bicarbonate and vinegar together…you’re literally neutralising acid and creating carbon dioxide ( the bubbles), water and sodium acetate that’s just a salt ( not table salt) . Basic gcse chemistry. Expensive fizzy water effectively. Only argument to use together is the bubbles “loosening debris” but we’re not talking powerful, fizz strong enough to remove anything a cloth and elbow grease or toothbrush wouldn’t .
Use vinegar to dissolve calcium carbonate ( limescale).
Bicarb on other stains and sanitising. Use in shower drain and around anywhere likley to develop stains or greasey ( yep, from bodies 🤢) - it’s a “saponification”reaction .

bicarb , like cif, not recommended on glass as abrasive…personally never had issue, but just be careful.

But that picture is pretty intense given that’s the “after” and won’t come off with a Hg type stronger limescale remover. Frankly might be easier to see if plumber could replace glass or screen 😱

I read on here that, once you have managed to get rid of the limescale, you should apply Glaco (a glass coating, usually for cars, that repels water and improves visibility) to keep your shower screen clean and clear. You apply it, leave for 5-10 minutes, and then buff off with a microfibre cloth. After that, leave it to cure for 12 hours, and then it's set, and is said to last for around six months. I have only applied it to my shower screen this weekend, so we'll see how that goes! (I intend to apply it to my windscreen, too, but the car needs a good wash first...)

I used that in my old bathroom. Very Hard water area . After 6 months no effect - guess weekly clean rubbed it off…still left watermarks anyway, just easier to clean

but hey, if her screen can get that bad, worth a try once clean…

I just moved to a softer water area…problem solved…bit expensive to do that though 🤷‍♀️🤣🤣

Bower collective limescale remover is much better than viakil.

Once you’ve used that then after every shower scrub the screen with a scrub daddy filled with half washing up liquid and half distilled vinegar and squeegee off.

2 adults in home
Bar Keepers friend ( powdered not cream ). Wet the shower screen and apply the powder then scrub with a green scouring pad. Rinse and dry then apply HG shower screen protector.
I do this every couple of months.
After a shower we always wipe the shower screen down with a squeegee and turn extractor on for a few minutes

I came to mention Bar Keepers Friend. Get the powder that you make into a paste.

Between Bar Keeper's Friend and Viakal, I am yet to be defeated.💪

Which recommended: couple of spoonfuls of citric acid( buy on Amazon) in spray bottle. Can buy spray bottles at B and M or Amazon. Spray on screen leave a few minutes then scrub with no scratch scourer. Spray again then wipe with squeegee or even better Magic Wipe drying cloths, they are expensive but brilliant, available on Amazon.
I wipe down my shower after every use with the magic wipe cloths.

Edited

Yep, better than vinegar (acetic acid) as lower pH ( stronger acid)…so worth a try on this if she’s not yet tried

for maintenance though use vinegar..a lot cheaper especially in 5L bottles I buy. Should get away with weaker acid if done every week

just need care around chrome and stainless steel with citric acid..if left for longer time undiluted can cause corroding into metal-leaves unpolished blemishes . Cover metal if leaving for 20 mins or more.

MollyFeather · 17/02/2026 21:07

I stumbled across Nancy Birtwistle on Instagram and she has a home made natural limescale remover, easily made up with a few ingredients - she calls it ‘pure magic’

I didn’t think for one moment it would work but it bloody well did! I was amazed

so look that up an give it a go

I use HG limescale remover on my shower screen. It works a treat!

I've been using that daily for over a week now and not a bit of difference.

Goodness knows what the problem is but I've used virtually all of these to no avail.

Kilrock liquid lime scale remover

Helga55 · 17/02/2026 21:16

I did this the other day, used ‘the pink stuff’ paste on a damp (not wet) sponge, circular motion all over, rinsed and wiped dry, looks like new

Loughrigg77 · 17/02/2026 11:33

Thanks everyone. We are in a hard water area (meant to mention that in the original post but forgot!) It's been like that since we moved in; I do clean it regularly but the lady who lived here before us was disabled so she probably couldn't keep on top of it

Edited

The limescale may have etched the glass and you can't do anything about that

HerosUncle · 17/02/2026 21:20

SummerFeverVenice · 17/02/2026 17:32

Pumice will scratch glass. It can only really be used on porcelain like a toilet bowl or sink.

Correct.

LifeIsGreatForUnicorns · 17/02/2026 21:22

We live in a hard water area and I’ve tried most things with little success but I have found that Cif bathroom cleaner works wonders on my screen and brings it up like new

MsGreying · 17/02/2026 21:50

Washing up liquid and a dry microfibre cloth.

wand3rer · 17/02/2026 22:13

You mentioned trying vinegar. How did you use it?

We had limescale marks very similar to yours. I soaked a dozen sheets of kitchen roll in vinegar and pressed them onto the shower screen. It’s a bit fiddly, but leave them there for 30–60 minutes. Then peel them off and use the same sheets to wipe down the screen. It comes up sparkling 😊

No scrubbing needed!

I haven't tried on tiles. Is vinegar safe on grout too? 🤔

I thought the same but I've been using it for over 2 years and I wouldn't go back. No scratches, sparkling results.

pinkpony88 · 17/02/2026 22:38

I live in a hard water area and use harpic limescale remover. The blue one. I squirt it all over the screens then foam it up with a sponge and leave for about 10 mins. Works a treat!

Franjipanl8r · 17/02/2026 22:39

Kilrock limescale remover (make sure the room is well ventilated as it’s seriously strong stuff). Then once you’ve wiped it with the Kilrock, go at it with some Brillo pads.

FlorenceBlack · 17/02/2026 22:44

Citric Acid, mix in a jug with hot water, once dissolved add a little Fairy liquid.
Decant into a spray bottle.
For the exact quantities look for Nancy Birtwhistle on Instagram.
It’s cheap and very effective, doesn’t produce any fumes but I’d wear rubber gloves.

Puppycuddler · 17/02/2026 22:50

Try Peek metal polish. Small pea sized amount. I tried it on mine a few weeks back and it clears limescale really well!

There is a really strong limescale remover with a yellow lid. I can't remember what it's called.. I'll try to find it

Xmasmusings · 17/02/2026 22:52

Hi @Loughrigg77, do you think you could let us know how you get on? Mine looks the same as yours so you have my fervent sympathy.

doobaz · 17/02/2026 22:54

It's called Kilrock. It's really amazing stuff

A Scrub Daddy worked incredibly well on mine, even without additional cleaning products. I’ve since stocked up, they’re amazing!

Yes, CIF and a scrub Daddy! Although if you just swipe the shower daily with a squidgy and some method shower cleaner, it never builds up.
