Is cleaning the oven supposed to be this hard?!

Admittedly its not been done in a year, lots of burnt on crud, but I've used Mr Muscle about 5 times and the burnt on bits on the bottom are still there. It does get better each time but my god its taking ages. Any tips?

You need Oven Pride, very chemically but it works!

Bigearringsbigsmile · 16/12/2025 16:20

Oven pride
Blows Mr muscle out of the water and doesn't suffocate you with the smell either

I am feeling quite light headed! I've stopped now so I can ventilate the house before my son comes home.

Mr Muscle isn’t that great.
My advice is:
get heavy duty PTFE liner for the floor (Lakeland sells it)
use the gel you paint on that comes with bags for the shelves, Oven Brite I think. But shelves can go in dishwasher instead if you have one
clingfilm on the door on top of the gel to stop it sliding off.

Clean it after every use then it doesn't build up, apologies if you have been ill or unable to.

Soluckyinlove · 16/12/2025 16:28

I bought oven liners for the bottom of my ovens when I bought my last cooker. What a difference they make. When you eventually get it clean maybe see if they would be suitable for yours. Mine are just cheap ones from Aldi. I can pull them out in a couple of seconds if I've had a spill and chuck in the sink. They don't even need scrubbing, just wiping, after a five minute soak.

Yes definitely! Cleans like a dream and so easy. I have no idea why people pay 80 quid to get this done.

Pink stuff is a miracle worker!

Clefable · 16/12/2025 16:39

This is why I get a nice man in to do it once a year.

Oven Pride works but that stuff is really dangerous, a friend’s husband got a tiny splash on his forearm and even though he immediately rinsed it, it burned through layers of skin and he had to get burn treatment for weeks. I won’t have it in the house after seeing what he went through with it.

The chap I use doesn’t use caustic chemicals in the house but the oven is sparkling by the end. Well worth paying for! And then oven liners help keep it clean.

This sounds really useful thanks I will look into it.

My racks have come out lovely after being through the dishwasher, if only I could put the whole oven in there!

I was cleaning the glass door last week and nothing was working, so I tried a piece of magic eraser and it came up spotless in minutes. I didn’t try it inside but I will next time.

I'm only doing this because my mum is visiting :P no tbf I did want to clean it for Christmas. I don't do a lot of cooking these days so will suggest to DP that he starts cleaning it after every use, will report back on what he says!

Watched a video of this on TikTok- a woman used cif all over the glass, brushed on with a paintbrush then put cling film over left for few hours and came up great

LivingDeadGirlUK · 16/12/2025 16:48

I wonder if I should have left it to 'soak' for longer but the can said no more than 30 mins, all the youtube videos are talking about leaving product for a hour or even over night!

I am with Clefable. Get someone in to do it. I was lying on the floor with my head in the oven the day before my sixtieth birthday and I thought sod this . Best Birthday present I ever gave myself.

SatsumaDog · 16/12/2025 18:15

It’s a horrible job and I’ve never been able to do it well myself. If you can afford it, look into getting someone to come and do it for you. The chap I used had a van with trays of cleaning stuff which he soaked all the pieces in (he took the oven door etc apart). It was all done outside the house so no smelly chemicals in the kitchen. He did an amazing job.

Alicorn1707 · 16/12/2025 18:20

a dampened dishwasher tablet, rub all over the oven then wiped off with warm water, really cuts through the grease and grime.

EverardDeTroyes · 16/12/2025 18:24

Don't use Oven Pride if you have wooden worktops and might splash the tiniest amount of the stuff on them. My worktops were ruined with just the minutest contact.

BoredZelda · 16/12/2025 18:26

Another vote for oven pride. It works miracles.

Also, don’t have wooden worktops. 😆
