Is cleaning the oven supposed to be this hard?!

Admittedly its not been done in a year, lots of burnt on crud, but I've used Mr Muscle about 5 times and the burnt on bits on the bottom are still there. It does get better each time but my god its taking ages. Any tips?

Slightly concerned about the Oven pride in my basket now, I'm sight impaired so am prone to splashing things without noticing :/

What are you doing that for?

Just get in a Contractor! Life is too short!

GAMI

I use a hob/oven scraper and it never takes more than two lots of Mr Muscle Oven Cleaner to get it spotless. I put the shelves in the dishwasher to soften up any deposits then they're easy to scrub clean.

Arran2024 · 16/12/2025 18:48

Oven cleaning company all the way! You end up with an oven that looks like brand new. £50 well spent imo

OMGitsnotgood · 16/12/2025 18:51

Discovered by accident after the first cook of twice baked souffles, when first bake was in a water bath: the steam from the water bath loosened a lot of the baked on mess and a lot could be wiped clean. Ideally, if you can think of something that needs cooking in a water bath you will double up on energy consumption but even if not, might be worth just putting some boiling water in a roasting tin and leaving in the oven on high for 30 mins or so

I did this once. She basically took a scraper to everything, which left it scratched, which means more stuff burns on. Never again!

Also, don’t have wooden worktops. 😆

They're great for pretty much everything else, as long as you keep them oiled.

But no, sadly, I won't choose them again.

My friend has them and complains nobody else in the house ever properly cleans and oils them. Sounds like a total faff to me!

Bizarre. Was that just a regular cleaner? That's not what an oven cleaning company does.

Imbrocator · 16/12/2025 19:00

I use a baking soda and water paste and an old sponge with a scouring pad. Works like a charm. The baking soda is a mild abrasive, very effective at getting off old dried oils and fats, and you can wipe it down at the end with the clean side of the sponge and some water to get the paste off.

Easy, no fumes, and non toxic for cooking in after.

MeridaBrave · 16/12/2025 19:02

I put the shelves in the oven pride stuff around once every 2-3 months and spray the removable shelf at the bottom every couple of weeks so it never gets that bad. It’s only hard as it’s not been done for a year

Tpu · 16/12/2025 19:02

Just want to check OP that you definitely don’t have pyrolytic self-cleaning?

Fuckoffeasypeelers · 16/12/2025 19:04

Self cleaning oven all the way!
Glass doors pop out
Please on newspaper and add a bit of oven mate
Run glass and shelves through dishwasher

I've just done both mine and they are sparkling

I wasn't even sad when my oven broke and I got a new one so I didn't have to clean it. Wish I knew self cleaning was a thing though.

ThankYouVeryMuchJerry · 16/12/2025 19:29

Careful with oven liners if there’s a heating element in the bottom of your oven. I didn’t realise there’s one in mine and the liner welded itself to the floor of the (brand new) oven 😩 I did eventually get it off but it was incredibly difficult with a lot of frantic scrubbing

ImWearingPantaloons · 16/12/2025 19:32

Another vote for Oven Mate from Lakeland.

No smell and works amazingly

MaggieFS · 16/12/2025 19:33

Also team Over Pride here.

RaraRachael · 16/12/2025 19:33

Definitely recommend Oven Pride - just don't get it on your skin.

I've also used Astonish paste and it was very good.

BeckyBloom · 16/12/2025 19:50

It’s a job I dont mind paying for… my oven is about 20 years old and still spotless especially after the oven man has been!
