Is cleaning the oven supposed to be this hard?!

Admittedly its not been done in a year, lots of burnt on crud, but I've used Mr Muscle about 5 times and the burnt on bits on the bottom are still there. It does get better each time but my god its taking ages. Any tips?

The comments mocking those who suggest cleaning after use are a bit rude. It takes seconds to clean up a spill/mess in the oven right after it happens. It’s the same amount of effort as cleaning something that spills over on the hob or in the microwave, both of which wouldn’t be left without cleaning so why leave an oven mess?

Surely ovens get dirty beyond an actual spillage though. If you do a lot of roasting for example, the oven gets greasy and it gets into everything. That's where professional oven cleaning comes into its own imo.

It’s not the same amount of effort, a hob tends to be at standing up height whereas you need to get down on the floor to reach the oven.

We get a man in. We’d moved in and thought the oven didn’t have a clear glass window. It did once it was cleaned. There’s a no bad chemicals oven cleaner who comes round and does them.

I needed this thread!! I hate cleaning the oven so have a lady. booked in for the end of November but she’s cancelled three times due to staff shortages 😭 I’m going to have to clean it myself because it’s too dirty for Xmas then find a be company to use next year!

Nannyfannybanny · 18/12/2025 11:29

Doesn't anyone on MN have a built-in oven at waist or eye level then!

I am making a note for when I move to my retirement bungalow!

I'd vote for paying a man to do it, we have a range master so four oven bits and he charged 75 quid, it was spotless. We now also use the lakeland silicone mats for the bottom, you just wipe them off each time and nothing sticks to them (appreciate it doesn't help you right now, but it keeps them clean going forward).

Gettingbysomehow · 18/12/2025 12:50

Life is too short to clean an oven. I get it done by someone else about once a year, costs around £50.
Also the airfryer is so much easier to clean.

This sounds really useful thanks I will look into it.

My racks have come out lovely after being through the dishwasher, if only I could put the whole oven in there!

Get someone out to clean it.

Then:

I line the bottom with this of any new oven https://www.amazon.co.uk/Oven-Liners-Bottom-Pack-Accessories/dp/B0D7MFC9JL

and then put the same stuff on all trays and then two or three layers of proper decent foil on top of all trays. My oven is immaculate and looks new.

It’s very much the same amount of effort as cleaning something else that’s dirty in the kitchen and very simple when you do it right away. You simply remove the racks, place in sink with soapy water, then wipe down the inside and door. The reason why people on this thread are struggling is because they wait to clean their oven and then it’s caked on and disgusting. I cannot imagine being okay with cooking food in a dirty space or having the smell of old food wafting through the house as it burns up in the oven. If the issue is bending down then cleaning while sitting on a chair could help.

it’s always a race to the bottom on here in terms of people proclaiming basic cleanliness as impossible or for people who have too much time on their hands. Not cleaning up after yourself isn’t something to be proud of.

My old over was like this, it was really good as well as a lot safer to use imo. I will get my kitchen redone some time and have a counter top oven again one day.

I’ve tried liners but find they waft around with a fan oven. Any tips?

I was cleaning the glass door last week and nothing was working, so I tried a piece of magic eraser and it came up spotless in minutes. I didn’t try it inside but I will next time.

Did it? My oven and shelves are fine i have liners but the glass is embarrassing 😳 I will try this.

Life’s too short to clean your oven every day. Pay someone else to do it if you can afford it.

My thoughts exactly. Why would anyone have an oven underneath their hob? I had one in a new build once. It was the first thing I changed

I don't understand what you mean of course people have their oven underneath the hob! Do you think everyone has room for separate?

Razor blade! Scrapes the crud off. Easy peasy.

Husband had s blade in a metal holder which worked brilliantly but you can buy them.

WonderingWanda · 29/12/2025 09:34

Heat the oven to about 150 and then use a bbq scraper on the bottom of the oven to get the bulk of the grease off, the heat softens it a bit. Then use Elbow grease paste and a sponge scourer to clean it off. The paste works well on the glass too.

The nasty chemicals don't really do any more of a good job and they are so bad for us and the water supply.

catpigeon · 29/12/2025 09:38

I use ovenu. Worth it.
