Is cleaning the oven supposed to be this hard?!

Admittedly its not been done in a year, lots of burnt on crud, but I've used Mr Muscle about 5 times and the burnt on bits on the bottom are still there. It does get better each time but my god its taking ages. Any tips?

Another vote for Lakeland oven cleaner.
It's really good , just paint it one yo and have a leisurely brew and come back and wipe it off.
Some stubborn bits may need another going over but there is no scrubbing involved.
Just make sure you paint / dollop it on thickly .

Pink stuff is a miracle worker!

I love the Pink stuff too

Pink stuff + scrub daddy

Ivy888 · 16/12/2025 23:11

Use a glass scraper. Much more effective than mr muscle etc.

I know right! 😂

JillMW · 17/12/2025 08:06

Not helpful now but when you need a new oven get a self cleaning one. Well worth it.

Nannyfannybanny · 17/12/2025 08:17

Not sure what is funny about cleaning the oven after use,if you have something spill over and burn on, why the hell would you leave it a year! Then,oh,look what happens,it's incredibly difficult to clean! A word of warning regarding oven liners, I had one, not a disposable one like greaseproof paper, I put it on the bottom of the oven, while I was doing roast potatoes, high heat, could smell burning. It had a maximum temperature which I hadn't seen on the package, and it caught fire. Before I get accused of having too much time...I had 4 dks, by the time I had the last was also looking after 2 dgks, and I worked ft nights nursing. I never let stuff build up.

Nannyfannybanny · 16/12/2025 16:24

Clean it after every use then it doesn't build up, apologies if you have been ill or unable to.

I’m genuinely intrigued that you clean your oven after every use. Where on earth do you find the time?
I’d rather starve and not use it than have to clean it each day.

ETA- I just get someone in and pay them £70 every 6 months.

Maybe she uses the time saved by not reading the instructions on things like oven liners? 😉
I’ve been using them for 20 years and never had one burst into flames, but of course it goes without saying you should check the instructions and also make sure yours is the right type of oven. I have a multifunctional oven and on the rare occasions we use the bottom heating element it’s important to remove the liner first.

I use a baking soda and water paste and an old sponge with a scouring pad. Works like a charm. The baking soda is a mild abrasive, very effective at getting off old dried oils and fats, and you can wipe it down at the end with the clean side of the sponge and some water to get the paste off.

Easy, no fumes, and non toxic for cooking in after.

How long do you leave it to “infuse”?

PistachioTiramisu · 17/12/2025 08:38

Get it done professionally - I have mine cleaned twice a year - £70 for 2 ovens. He uses steam to clean them - no chemicals - and they look like new afterwards.

Aposterhasnoname · 17/12/2025 08:43

Just buy an airfryer then you never need to use the oven.

LemonLeaves · 17/12/2025 08:44

Oven Pride is brilliant but but if you want to avoid chemicals you can use stuff you should have at home already.

Next time you have finished using the oven but it's still hot, put a dish of boiling water in and leave it. The steam loosens off all sorts of crap. Then use baking soda in a paste with a microfibre cloth or micro scourer (watch for scratching). A damp dishwasher tablet or some cream cleaner will help on any tough bits.

For the shelves - if you have a bath, put them in there and cover with hot water and a couple of cups of bio washing powder and leave for a couple of hours.

fufulina · 17/12/2025 08:47

Another vote for getting someone in. It’s brilliant.

My friend has them and complains nobody else in the house ever properly cleans and oils them. Sounds like a total faff to me!

Mine are great, you only really oil when new or once in a blue moon. And if you want to get them looking good as new you can sand off any marks and stains re-oil and they're great. Much easier than having to replace all the worktops because of a few marks and stains like composite or even marble. And if they age a bit they just look sort of homely (in the British sense, can't think of another word).

How big a Turkey does yours take?😀

Pineapplesunshine · 17/12/2025 11:12

Just to add to those who have said use baking soda, I make a paste of baking soda and white vinegar and spread that on and leave it for a bit and that works pretty well. Still a bit of scrubbing, but a lot less! I’ve got to do mine this week… 😐

"Clean it after every use"

😂

But I really do clean my oven pretty much after every use. Not when I bake a cake, say, when there is no splat, but definitely after a roast. Otherwise the oven makes the kitchen/house smell as the fat splat burns on more.

blankcanvas3 · 17/12/2025 11:36

Life is too short to clean an oven. Especially after every use wtf???? I pay £60 every 3 months and a very nice man comes to do it for me. It’s the highlight of DD’s quarter because he always brings her some sweets.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 17/12/2025 11:53

Is it just me that quite enjoys doing ovens?!
Not enough to do it every time I use it, but once you have nailed the technique to make it reasonably easy it’s very satisfying as cleaning tasks go and has the advantage that it takes a while to get messy again, compared to all the jobs that need doing again within a day.

PashaMinaMio · 17/12/2025 12:05

After I’ve cleaned my oven I sprinkle Bicarbonate of soda quite thickly all over the bottom
of the oven cavity. This absorbs drips and burnt bits. It looks a bit strange but it works.

Next time all I have to do is wash & wipe the bottom and everything comes away.

It is actually a good idea to wipe the sides and racks after cooking, as I do, but I appreciate not all folks have the inclination of time to do that.

IfNot · 17/12/2025 12:11

I just put a pan of hot water and lemon in the hot oven after using then wipe down, my ovens not gross and it takes barely any effort.
Id get a man in for a really dirty oven- wouldn’t mess with those chemicals myself.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 17/12/2025 12:50

thanks for all the tips everyone, I don't think I can stretch to cleaning it every time but def going to do it more often than yearly :)

I pay someone £40 to do mine, one of the only things I pay for!

Nannyfannybanny · 17/12/2025 17:13

I don't use the oven every day. I batch cook, freeze. Want to make the most of the electricity I am using. Yes, I did not see the maximum temperature on the oven liner.. not as bad as a relative who put the Christmas pudding in the microwave for 30 minutes instead of 3! In the winter,it's the slow cooker. Im old school, cook from scratch. In the winter months,it's the slow cooker.

I might have done that to a pie once in the early days of microwaves when we weren’t used to microwave cooking times….
