Do you wash your cleaning cloths?

Our cleaner asks us to wash the cloths she uses to clean our house (dusters, j-cloths, large clothes cloths she uses to clean the loo etc). I'm all for recycling but it feels a bit gross to be washing clothes she cleans the loo with and a bit of a waste of water and electricity to wash j-clothes and pointless to wash dusters every time, not to mention the hassle of hanging them. What does everyone else do?

Bucket of bleach and boiling hot water. Wouldn't fancy putting them in my washing machine

suah · 21/04/2025 18:00

Of course I wash cloths, they’re not disposable! You use laundry detergent, yes? That is soap that kills any germs on the cloths. I just stick them in whichever load I’m doing next so they don’t sit around too long.

I don’t wash dusters every time though because otherwise they get bobbly/threadbare fast.

OperationalSupport · 21/04/2025 18:03

I have a load of microfibre cloths that get used for all cleaning/dusting jobs, then get washed and reused. I don’t have specific ones for certain jobs. I hang them on an airer to dry and they’re dry very quickly. We don’t use j-cloths (would they even survive the washer?).

NannyR · 21/04/2025 18:06

I wash cleaning cloths, throwing them away is so wasteful. They come out of the washing machine looking and smelling clean and fresh, as do my clothes and I haven't, as yet, developed any diseases as a result.

MereNoelle · 21/04/2025 18:08

Yes if course I wash them

MirandaWest · 21/04/2025 18:08

We use microfibre cloths and wash them in tne washing machine along with other things. Not found it a hassle

Glowinglights · 21/04/2025 18:11

Microfibre clothes here as well.
Washed at 60c with towels and never had a problem.

BenbeculaBeach · 21/04/2025 18:11

I chuck them all in the washing machine and wash them at 60°C. It only makes a small load, so I do a quick wash, and then a rinse cycle once I've emptied the machine (which takes 14 minutes). I'd hate to bin them after one use - it seems so wasteful.

Nevertrustacop · 21/04/2025 18:13

Yes, the cleaner always puts them on a wash as she leaves.

Darkambergingerlily · 21/04/2025 18:14

Of course I wash then. What else would you do? Bin then after 1 use?!?!?

honestly mumsnet is such an eye opener to waste

Hoppinggreen · 21/04/2025 18:14

I chuck my microfibre clothes in the machine with clothes etc but I don't use them to clean toilets

Arlanymor · 21/04/2025 18:14

Yes they get washed - I wouldn't use cloths that couldn't be washed and reused, that would be horribly wasteful.

WhoWhereWhatWhy · 21/04/2025 18:15

our cleaner uses maybe 15-20 cloths and dusters and microfibre cloths every time she comes. She leaves them in the washing machine, and I wash them all (I don’t add any other items) with washing g powder at 75 degrees and dry them for the following week.

I can’t imagine how else I’d wash them though?

MissFritton65 · 21/04/2025 18:16

I make up a bucket of Napisan and leave it in the utility room. My cleaner puts all the cloths she has used in it to soak and I put them in with a 60° wash when I next do one.

Septua · 21/04/2025 18:17

I wash cloths and heads for the flat-mop in a separate hot wash with prewash so everything is killed and any residual cleaning products rinsed away. Wouldn't dream of cleaning anything with a dirty cloth or putting cleaning cloths in with clothes. The washing machine needs a maintenance hot wash regularly anyway.

I tend to use disposable stuff like Blitz kitchen roll for the loo though.

PooksBear · 21/04/2025 18:17

Wash them with a laundry cleanser plus whatever soap you use. I use Astonish

user1497787065 · 21/04/2025 18:18

I wash my cleaning cloths and dusters together along with the mop head each week.

Coconutter24 · 21/04/2025 18:18

What would you suggest she do use a clean cloth for your toilet then put it in a cupboard wet/damp and then get it out and re use it in a weeks time? 🤢

user1497787065 · 21/04/2025 18:18

I wash my cleaning cloths and dusters together along with the mop head each week.

Yes, of course. I do as above.

Motherknowsrest · 21/04/2025 18:20

I'm a bit funny about toilet cloths so I use rags (tatty pants, old odd socks etc) for that and bin them.

Everything else gets washed in the washing machine. I only use method stuff anyway so it's not especially harsh.

Talipesmum · 21/04/2025 18:20

I wash them - are you suggesting leaving it longer between washes, or throwing them away?
It’s not at all gross to wash cleaning cloths - they get thoroughly cleaned by the end of the 1-2 hour cycle with washing powder, there’s no residual toilet dirt on them!

Abra1t · 21/04/2025 18:21

Of course I wash them.

Caspianberg · 21/04/2025 18:21

Yes machine wash. I just wash all cleaning clothes together once a week, with mop head. On 60. Then just hang to dry.
Our machine weighs the fabric and adjusts so a 60 degree cotton wash is shorter if just a pile of cloths and not full load clothing.
I find it quicker to do Separate as then all hung to dry separate and away in utility. Instead of mixed with clothing

In terms of hygiene, we used washable nappies for 2 years and they were washed every other day in machine. The same machine we would use for everything else. It’s clean after a 60 wash so it’s not a problem

Squashedbanaynay · 21/04/2025 18:21

Such a ridiculous post. Of course you wash them. We have a pile of microfibre cloths for all purposes. Once used they’re thrown in a bucket and at the end of the week they’re boil washed in the washing machine with laundry powder and napisan.

Fucking…duh.

SapphireOpal · 21/04/2025 18:21

I use j cloths for toilet and dispose of them but everything else, including the rest of the bathroom and dusting, I use microfibre and wash them at a high temp.
