Do you wash your cleaning cloths?

Our cleaner asks us to wash the cloths she uses to clean our house (dusters, j-cloths, large clothes cloths she uses to clean the loo etc). I'm all for recycling but it feels a bit gross to be washing clothes she cleans the loo with and a bit of a waste of water and electricity to wash j-clothes and pointless to wash dusters every time, not to mention the hassle of hanging them. What does everyone else do?

No, of course not! I was thinking she should use disposable wipes and chuck it. I really don't think a cloth that cleans the loo should go into the machine with other laundry, do you? I have 3 boys, 2 teenagers, and our loos are pretty disgusting.

Disposable wipes are not environmentally friendly at all.

Moier · 23/04/2025 23:56

Bung them in washer along with pads from steam cleaner.. shower mat.. mop heads.. these all go in together. What else would you do? Not wash them? Throw them away after every use.

For the toilet I actually use disposable antibacterial wipes but sometimes I use an actual cloth but I don’t wash my cloths with laundry I do them all separately because I end up with so many

Perfect28 · 24/04/2025 06:58

Yes I wash cloths. We have a blue for loo rule so no cross contamination.

SparklyGlitterballs · 24/04/2025 07:14

The diversity of people is to be admired.

On one hand we have those who are grossed out by machine washing cleaning cloths with clothes (some of which, ironically, have been up against genitals and butt holes all day), and to the other extreme there are people who are happy to have oral and lick buttholes during sex (and worse!)

For the record I just shove all cleaning stuff in on a hot wash together, with bath and shower mats, maybe a dog towel too - creates a big enough wash to not necessitate putting in other clothes.

HappyAsASandboy · 24/04/2025 08:00

I use microfibre cloths and cotton flannels for all sorts of jobs around the house, including wiping baby bottoms and toilets.

As per my cloth nappy days, I keep them until I have a reasonable number (sometimes once a week, sometimes quicker than that) and then wash them for an hour at 40° with detergent and laundry cleanser, then add clothes to fill the machine and wash on a normal cycle with detergent.

I’ve been cleaning faces and bums and the house with the same cloths for years and nobody has died yet.

AltitudeCheck · 24/04/2025 08:13

Chuck them all (J cloths can be washed too) in with bath/loo mats, towels, dish clothes etc and use dettol in the fabric conditioner compartment of the machine. Short hot wash. Bedding goes in next.

blueleavesgreensky · 24/04/2025 13:21

so OP you DO wash the cloths;

To clarify:
J clothes are blue and white checked clothes which I assumed should be used for a few weeks then thrown away. I use them in the kitchen for the sink, surfaces etc then dispose after a month or two when worn out/dirty/smelly.
so you must be washing them as you use them otherwise they would stink after a few days. If you are soaking and rinsing them whilst using them that is still washing them.
Fabric dusters and those microfibre clothes - these are used for dusting (right?) but I am not sure need washing every week. I would be ok washing these in the washing machine though. At the moment they are washed every week
so you wash these weekly. The effort surely is minimal. They get chucked in with towels or bedding or clothes and they get hung up. That’s not a lot of one or effort surely.
Clothes to clean the sink/shower/bath - ok to put these in the machine
so you wash these too all good.
Clothes used to wipe the loo seat/toilet/floor below the toilet - I am really not happy with the idea of chucking these in the machine with the other clothes given that they (at a minimum) probably have wee on them.
you do realise your PANTS have urine and faecal matter in them don’t you? There is nothing in those cloths that isn’t also on underwear. There is probably more urine and faecal particles in pants tbh. ESP thongs. Women’s pants also have discharge all over the gusset.
My cleaner chucks all the cloths together to be washed. I think either they have to be washed separately in a bucket outside of the machine or disposable cloths used but I seem to be in the minority.
do you sanitise and wash your pants separately then? Even close fitting jeans will have urine and other discharge particles on them.

But your and your kids bums sit on the loo seats and your haven't chucked your kids in the bin, have you?

And your and your kids socks touch the floor in front of the loo and they go in with your normal laundry don't they?

AutumnLeaves24 · 22/04/2025 12:23

You're entitled to your opinion and I'm entitled to mine and in my opinion it is disgusting washing dish or face cloths, with cloths you use to clean the toilet

I find it grim enough that people wash their dish cloths and tea towels with their ordinary clothing and pants.

Most pet food is able to be eaten by humans, so in theory, I don't suppose this too much wrong with putting pet dishes in the dishwasher except lots of dishwashers aren't that brilliant and people end up with puddles of water here and there or stuck on food. Personally wouldn't want to be eating a chunk of champ at someone's house, so I'd rather the pets dishes were hand washed separately.

I wash pet dishes separately too and never put them in dishwasher!

I totally agree that cloths for cleaning the loo seat should not be washed with face flannel of tea towels!

At the moment I wash flannels along with bath towels and t-towels and bedding.

I wash bath mats separately as they always smell gross.

Cloths, as mentioned, I am currently washing ALL cleaning cloths (microfibre, j cloths, dusters etc) once a week on a short 30 degree quick 3kg load as not nearly enough for a full loads and seems wasteful? I still feel grossed out that the loo cloth is in there but maybe it's not that much worse than the bath mat. Any maybe bath mats and cloths should go in together? Am not putting them in with towels and bedding though.

Using a J cloth for a few weeks/month is pretty rank.

Even if just used for the kitchen surfaces?

Better to outvthem in with towels on a hot wash than wash at 30. 30 far too cool.

Yes

Well we're all alive so far and never had a stomach issue due to lack of hygiene!

Good to know.

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 25/04/2025 16:27

My cleaner uses microfibre cloths and i wash them in the washing machine with laundry cleanser after she’s done

Lazycatsitsonthemat · 25/04/2025 17:58

Micro fibre cloths shed into the water supply and end up in rivers and the sea where they cause a hazard to sea life and to us eventually. They aren’t environmentally friendly. I use Minky soak ups and have done for decades.

Icanttakethisanymore · 25/04/2025 18:00

Yes, we wash them, obviously.

Inbloom123 · 25/04/2025 18:11

I wash them on a hot wash in the machine, sometimes with tea towels/towels/bedsheets. What’s the issue? The wash kills all the germs.

Messycoo · 25/04/2025 21:05

I have at least 1 cloth in every wash !

queenofthebongo · 25/04/2025 22:43

Microfibres cloths here too. A fresh one out every couple of days and bung them in the normal wash. But I use loo paper to wipe the toilet then I flush it. Gross otherwise.

Dogaredabomb · 26/04/2025 00:02

brettsalanger · 22/04/2025 12:40

Me too.

And me 🤷🏼‍♂️

Dogaredabomb · 26/04/2025 00:03

Mostly because I'm too mean to put on a small wash.

lunaemma · 26/04/2025 00:49

I use old flannels. When the ones I use for my face and body get worn, I buy a new lot in a different colour and use the old for cleaning
wash with whatever else is in the machine. I don’t clean the toilet with a cloth so I don’t see the issue with a kitchen or bathroom sink cloth in the wash

This too. I use microfibre cloths and they then get washed either with the bedding load or towel load both of which are done at a 60 degree wash. I'll sometimes shove underwear and tea towels in too. The boil wash kills all the germs and no one has come to any harm yet!
