Do you wash your cleaning cloths?

winterrabbit · 21/04/2025 17:54

Our cleaner asks us to wash the cloths she uses to clean our house (dusters, j-cloths, large clothes cloths she uses to clean the loo etc). I'm all for recycling but it feels a bit gross to be washing clothes she cleans the loo with and a bit of a waste of water and electricity to wash j-clothes and pointless to wash dusters every time, not to mention the hassle of hanging them. What does everyone else do?

Aren't you lucky you don't have to share a communal washing machine or use a laundromat...

that doesn't even make sense.

I'm I'm not talking about using a different washing machine just a different wash load

And yes, I've used plenty of communal machines and laundromatss, but I don't know what you're doing where you're going, I don't put my washing in with other peoples.

uncomfortablydumb60 · 22/04/2025 16:15

I wash microfibre cloths with towels an tea towels
I don Understand why posters are aghast at washing them with clothes.
The point of a washing machine is that everything comes out clean!

mathanxiety · 22/04/2025 15:59

All microfiber cloths here - they go in the washing machine on their own in a small hot wash followed by a line dry.

I use a sponge for the loo, and that gets reused after a rinse with very hot water. It's kept in its own spot separate from all the other cleaning items, and I change it out monthly.

So you wash your microfibre cloths separately to your dishcloths and facecloths and clothes

Which is what I do, so why are you having a go at me about being lucky I don't use communal washing machines or laundromats??

uncomfortablydumb60 · 22/04/2025 16:21

I clean the toilet with a wodge of toilet roll then flush
I scrub pan with an old washing up brush as bowl is too small for a normal toilet brush

BogRollBOGOF · 22/04/2025 16:41

I give them a pre-wash then a full wash with clothes.

I use washable sanitary towels and used to use reusable nappies so I'm not squeamish about what goes in the washer!

Allmarbleslost · 22/04/2025 18:46

Of course I wish them! Cleaning cloths and dusters have their own small laundry bag and get washed once a week.

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 22/04/2025 21:04

Yes I wash them
What's the alternative. Use once then bin?

Lazycatsitsonthemat · 22/04/2025 22:23

MoveYourSelfDearie · 21/04/2025 21:00

I wash all cleaning cloths with the next load of washing. I don't treat them in any special way. Washing powder and a 40 degree wash. Yes, even the cloths we clean the bathroom and toilet with. I don't see a problem with washing a cloth that has touched a toilet seat. If you feel the need to bleach that cloth, wouldn't you need to bleach your backside and hands too?

I do this too.

savuni27 · 23/04/2025 00:01

I wash them, I have separate coloured cloths for the bathroom / toilet and they get washed separately. I then usually do a deep clean cycle on the washer afterwards.

WhenICalledYouLastNightFromTesco · 23/04/2025 00:41

I get it OP! I clean the toilet with toilet tissue, and I wash my cloths that clean the bathroom with the bath mat and shower curtain on a 60.

I wouldn't want a cloth that had been used to clean the toilet wiping my bathroom windowsill, regardless of what temperature I'd washed it on.

DiscoBeat · 23/04/2025 00:46

I clean kitchen surface cloths and tea towels with the towels but floor cloths, mop heads and bathroom cleaning cloths go in on their own just before I do a weekly washing machine clean.

DiscoBeat · 23/04/2025 00:47

NB I have colour coded cloths in all the bathrooms. Pink for sink, blue for loo.

Tbrh · 23/04/2025 01:59

Oh yes I find that gross and always ask them to wash them. But, at least of you're washing them you know they're clean and not been used from someone else's house

FreddoSwaggins · 23/04/2025 07:42

MattCauthon · 22/04/2025 15:47

I think this is why people struggle - I don't think they actually understand how washing machines, or dishwashers for that matter, work.

Having said that, I have a slightly irrational avoidance of DH's sweaty gym stuff with the rest of our clothes. But I get it's irrational. In my defense, it's also partly because his gym stuff, over time, just permanently has sweat smells and there's always a period between when that starts to happen and when he tosses them out and I don't want the other clothes impacted!

He needs to soak them with bicarb or vinegar (both of he likes it fizzy!) before putting them in the wash. Works a treat.

I don’t know what a J cloth is but I am SO confused by this post.

OP what do you do with the fabric dusters and cloths?

surely you don’t throw them away each day?

God, I had no idea that such a simple question would lead to such an outpouring!

I will make a few clarifications but will preface it all by saying that I work full time, have 3 kids, one of whom is very challenging with ADHD and other issues, one who has a lot of football commitments (training every day) and a 6 year old. I am a single mother to the older two, the breadwinner/main earner and am run ragged. I have NO personal time and very limited time to chew the cud about cleaning.

To clarify:

J clothes are blue and white checked clothes which I assumed should be used for a few weeks then thrown away. I use them in the kitchen for the sink, surfaces etc then dispose after a month or two when worn out/dirty/smelly.

Fabric dusters and those microfibre clothes - these are used for dusting (right?) but I am not sure need washing every week. I would be ok washing these in the washing machine though. At the moment they are washed every week but I question if the energy/hassle involved justifies it,

Clothes to clean the sink/shower/bath - ok to put these in the machine

Clothes used to wipe the loo seat/toilet/floor below the toilet - I am really not happy with the idea of chucking these in the machine with the other clothes given that they (at a minimum) probably have wee on them. My cleaner chucks all the cloths together to be washed. I think either they have to be washed separately in a bucket outside of the machine or disposable cloths used but I seem to be in the minority.

Using a J cloth for a few weeks/month is pretty rank.

Maybe the cloth that cleans the toilet seat should be single use? Just find it gross to wash it with all the other clothes in the machine.

Darkambergingerlily · 21/04/2025 18:14

Of course I wash then. What else would you do? Bin then after 1 use?!?!?

honestly mumsnet is such an eye opener to waste

Edited

As my post says, I am washing them after use but I question i) if it's energy efficient overall to be washing what seem to be disposable cloths and ii) if it's hygenic to put the cloth that cleans the loo a) in the washing machine and b) with the other cloths.

Just use loo roll babes. No need to buy single use cloths and chuck em.

Coconutter24 · 21/04/2025 18:18

What would you suggest she do use a clean cloth for your toilet then put it in a cupboard wet/damp and then get it out and re use it in a weeks time? 🤢

No, of course not! I was thinking she should use disposable wipes and chuck it. I really don't think a cloth that cleans the loo should go into the machine with other laundry, do you? I have 3 boys, 2 teenagers, and our loos are pretty disgusting.

OP posts:
WomanIsTaken · 23/04/2025 22:41

I imagine your cleaner uses a disinfectant or antibacterial cleaner when she cleans your toilet? Honestly, with your regular detergent and a 60°C wash, those cloths are absolutely fine.

Mine do. And my mop head. In with the bath towels and bath mat at 60. Don't see the issue. 60degrees will kill all nasties.

PashaMinaMio · 23/04/2025 22:48

I wash ALL my cleaning cloths regularly. White dishcloths in with white washing, coloured cloths including loo cloths with colours or dark washing. I like using nice clean cloths,

I also wash, on a quick wash, my car cleaning cloths but I do those separately so not within a clothes wash due to the wax and chemicals in the shampoo and car polish,

I never wash anything above 40degrees including towels and bedding and I always line dry, weather permitting. My washing always smells nice.

I am not diseased, I don’t smell, and all my clothes look clean when I wear them. No stains!

There is too much anxiety about washing anything these days. Too much advocating silly high temperatures. It’s driven my advertising and marketing but there’s no need for it.

Parallellives · 23/04/2025 23:06

Yes of course I wash them.
I have a big bag of microfibre cloths that the cleaner uses and afterwards she puts them on a hot wash for me to hang out. I really don’t have an issue with loo cloths being washed with other cloths - it’s hot water and detergent, the wash takes a couple of hours, they will be clean.

Do you do separate washes for your underwear as well?

In the kitchen I use cotton cloths that get changed every day, and I put them on a hot white wash once a week with towels etc.
I think it’s a bit gross to use a j-cloth for a couple of weeks and then throw it away.

I can’t understand people throwing away cloths or using disposable wipes that will be hanging around the planet for hundreds of years.
