Do you wash your cleaning cloths?

Our cleaner asks us to wash the cloths she uses to clean our house (dusters, j-cloths, large clothes cloths she uses to clean the loo etc). I'm all for recycling but it feels a bit gross to be washing clothes she cleans the loo with and a bit of a waste of water and electricity to wash j-clothes and pointless to wash dusters every time, not to mention the hassle of hanging them. What does everyone else do?

I scrub the toilet with a brush so the only 'toilet cloths' I use are for the seat. Around the base I use a floor cloth. These get washed in the machine with Zoflora or similar and some detergent when I've accumulated enough to have a washload. I wash all the cleaning cloths together, the dusters and the microfibre floor cloths etc, and put them in a bucket under the sink while I gather enough, but it's normally enough for a small load every couple of weeks.

Im in my 60’s. Have brought up a number of children, had numerous animals and have also done some cleaning as a job. Cloths get washed with anything else on 40 degrees. I’ve not once had a D&V illness nor have any family members. Continuously read here about ‘noro virus’ and such like and really wonder what people are doing

MattCauthon · 22/04/2025 11:28

I am always amazed at how nervous people are about putting things in their washing machine. I dont' wash cleaning cloths with clothes but more because I worry the products used on them will damage my clothes during the initial rinse and wash cycles.

The cloth I use to clean kitchen counters etc daily is left in a bleach and water soution overnight and then also washed on a hot cycle with other cleaning cloths or with towels.

But this thread has reminded me that I have not seen the cleaning cloths my cleaner uses this week so I need to go search them out - she has a team and they have an annoying habit of hiding them!!!

FGS all you like

But I will never wash dish cloths or face cloths and toilet cloths in the same wash. A separate wash with fresh water is hardly an onerous task and in my opinion far more hygienic.

No way, do I want my face cloths and dish cloths swelling around in the same water as cloths that have been used to clean floors all the toilet

Your detail may have more bacteria, but mine certainly doesn't

I think putting cloth you have used to wash floors and toilets in with other cloths and clothes is disgusting.

If you’re putting them on a boil wash with something like napisan in your washing machine it’s not disgusting at all, it’s perfectly hygienic. It being disgusting is all in your head.

It doesn’t matter, it’s the same argument as those who put pet dishes in the dish washer with their own dishes. I don’t. I hand wash the pet dishes instead. But I understand that logically it’s perfectly hygienic to wash with everything else in the dishwasher.

It’s just your choice not to wash these things together, but it’s by no measure disgusting.

You're entitled to your opinion and I'm entitled to mine and in my opinion it is disgusting washing dish or face cloths, with cloths you use to clean the toilet

I find it grim enough that people wash their dish cloths and tea towels with their ordinary clothing and pants.

Most pet food is able to be eaten by humans, so in theory, I don't suppose this too much wrong with putting pet dishes in the dishwasher except lots of dishwashers aren't that brilliant and people end up with puddles of water here and there or stuck on food. Personally wouldn't want to be eating a chunk of champ at someone's house, so I'd rather the pets dishes were hand washed separately.

I don't even do that. They just go in a normal wash at 40 with whatever else is there ready to be in the next wash. I don't use one for the toilet admittedly but all other cleaning cloths and tea towels jist get chucked in the machine when used and wait for a load to be added.

I don't consider it disgusting in anyway. I have a fully working washing machine that washes and rinses.

I chuck them in the machine once used and they then get washed with whatever else goes in the next load.

Me too.

sunshineandshowers40 · 22/04/2025 12:45

We use microfibre cloths and wash them in the washing machine after use. I have different coloured cloths for toilets so these wouldn't be used anywhere else.

It’s not a matter of opinion that boil washing cloths in detergent is hygienic. It’s fact.

You are of course entitled to your opinion as you can’t get over the heebie jeebies thinking about where the cloths have been. But they are, in actual fact, completely clean after being boil washed.

Do you know what washing machines are for? They make things clean.

Oh, how witty 🤣🤣

In my opinion it is disgusting to wash those items together. Having them swill around in the same water is revolting.

If you need to look up either of the words opinion or disgusting feel free.

This is irrational. A washing machine doesn’t just swill clothes around in water for a bit.

Wannabegreenfingers · 22/04/2025 15:45

What an odd question. Of course I wash them after every use. Had them for years, throw them in with the towels on a 60 degree wash. I'm not sticking a cloth down the loo, that's what the toilet brush is for (shock, horror).

I think this is why people struggle - I don't think they actually understand how washing machines, or dishwashers for that matter, work.

Having said that, I have a slightly irrational avoidance of DH's sweaty gym stuff with the rest of our clothes. But I get it's irrational. In my defense, it's also partly because his gym stuff, over time, just permanently has sweat smells and there's always a period between when that starts to happen and when he tosses them out and I don't want the other clothes impacted!

If it's not getting the sweat smells out, it's not doing a brilliant job is it?

But people can crack on watching cloth they've cleaned the toilet with and their tea towels and dish cloths

surely you know that over time sweat smells are a bit like stains - they just can't be gotten out. That's why I get him to toss them out!

mathanxiety · 22/04/2025 15:59

All microfiber cloths here - they go in the washing machine on their own in a small hot wash followed by a line dry.

I use a sponge for the loo, and that gets reused after a rinse with very hot water. It's kept in its own spot separate from all the other cleaning items, and I change it out monthly.

Aren't you lucky you don't have to share a communal washing machine or use a laundromat...
