Day 9 of March decluttering (yesterday): another third of the bag of receipts shredded (counting as 1 item); listed the two packs of socks on Vinted and they have both sold; DH agreed that the remaining 6 thermos mugs can go so I listed them on a freecycle group; and we used up one gift bag from our stash for a birthday present.

Pigtailsandall · 10/03/2025 12:43

Day 69 - kids sandals. Was going to list these on Vinted but tbh I couldn't be bothered so donated to someone with a smaller kid

Dobcaty · 10/03/2025 13:13

I'm so glad I found this thread, I do need motivation.
Baby number 2 its on his way, so I have approx 5 weeks to declutter the house top to bottom. 🙈
Did the same before the first arrived 21 months ago, but had a blind eyes since with full time work and study (and of course with the baby)
Yesterday completly freaked out so I cleared out the ensuite, today I'm going through all the wardrobes and so far have 3 big black bags of charity/tips/outgrown baby clothes to market them. I have no idea where its all the "crap" came from.
And I don't even want to think what is in the loft (boarded last year and hubby take care of those items, so I'm pretty sure we have a billions of cables/empty boxes etc) up there. And also all the gardening stuff when the plan was to do veggie boxes, and DIY our own patio/garden retreat. Well the garden is still the same as was when we moved in 2022!!
Wish me luck and I hope I can do it!

CheesePlantFeet · 10/03/2025 16:55

Hi @Dobcaty welcome to the thread 😊 and congratulations! I'm too scared to look in our loft, I know how bad it is!

Bin: half bottle of alcohol free gin opened last summer (it goes off, I mean of course it does, there's no alcohol, but who'd have thunk) 5 x expired bottles and jars from the fridge, pants, 4 x dead houseplants

Vinted: 2x jumpers, charm for bracelet, tunic top, bra

Total: 355

Pigtailsandall · 11/03/2025 14:19

Day 70 - sold outgrown kids trousers on Vinted.

Continuing to build my financial empire £2 sale at a time!

potionsmistress · 11/03/2025 14:51

My house isn't rammed with stuff, but we still need to declutter a fair bit.

The things I find hardest to get rid of is those which mean admitting I made a bad decision. So the expensive lipstick which doesn’t suit me. The sewing stuff I bought to do a project years ago and which I’ve never started (and never will!). Some things I can make some money from but usually nothing like I paid for them, so I just need to say ‘that was a mistake, and it’s time to move on’. But it’s hard!

Long time lurker and gradual declutterer. Thankyou @Sammysquiz for that phrase, this will really help me to get rid of things which seemed like good decisions at the time but are taking up space in my home. “It’s time to move on”. Love it.

Hello newbies

Im busy here, still home schooling and decluttering. A load more books have come into the house which dd is refusing to read. She’s quite broken by the school system so I’m taking it easy with her.

i have taken a load of electronics to Currys (including an iPad and lots of wires) to recycle. I have also found loads of old pyjamas to go, swimming costumes and a lamp. Also I decluttered 6 books. These things are in a pile by the front door, hopefully I’ll have time to go the charity shop tomorrow.

IDareSay · 12/03/2025 14:46

Checking in. I'm very behind! 200 items out

TidyClutterIsStillClutter · 13/03/2025 05:37

Straightened out another kitchen drawer y’day. Two jam jars into glass recycling.

Two shrunken and matted wool jerseys in the ragbag.

Bimblesalong · 13/03/2025 07:23

Ds1’s sock drawer emptied into a bin bag and down to his new house. His room 80% relocated to his new place.

EllieQ · 13/03/2025 08:59

Day 12 of March decluttering: plastic purse/ wallet used to keep useful stuff (hand cream, wipes, tissues etc) in my work bag - binned as the seams had split. I’ve replaced it with a makeup bag I was given for Christmas, so that’s out of a drawer and in use.

DeclutteringJane · 13/03/2025 09:19

Yesterday: Got rid of a huge bin bag of approximately 20 reusable nappies and 10 boosters for them.
Threw out an old pair of shoes that were stained with paint from being in the garage for ages, an old pair of DH's jeans that were totally wrecked, and the lid to a box.

YTD 286.

JK3 · 14/03/2025 10:04

Been really busy with work but did sell 4 items on Vinted and gave away a pair of boots. Total outs = 317

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 14/03/2025 10:06

Hi everyone, I would love to join! What counts as an “out”? I desperately need to declutter!

CheesePlantFeet · 14/03/2025 14:52

Hi @Peaceandquietandacuppa 😊 welcome! I think you make your own rules really. My outs are things that it feels like an effort has been made to get rid of. Not day to day consumption that goes in the bin anyway. Like if I finish off the jam at breakfast and threw the empty jar away, that doesn't count. But if I had a collection of "useful" jam jars that I decided I didn't need, because I've never made marmalade and realistically never will, that does count. Sometimes I group stuff and count it as 1 like a bag of coat hangers that got binned, sometimes I count stuff individually

Vinted: 2 gift bags, slip, 3 tops
Charity: 2 skirts

Total: 363

IndianSummer78 · 14/03/2025 15:11

peace an "out" for me is anything that's been hanging around for a while. So if I unwrap a parcel and throw out the packaging that doesn't count, but if I unwrapped it last month and kept the packaging in case I could reuse it then realised I never would, that counts. I've got stashes of most things to use up so until I'm down to one item of that type, I count it. I've got a curiosity of how many unneeded things are in my home, total, by the time I've finished, so I'm counting every little thing as 1 item and my total runs from when I first joined the thread over a year ago.

Today's outs:

3 x CD that don't work
Broken trousers
Used up candle
Used up hair mouse
DVD that doesn't play

Total is 3314

EllieQ · 14/03/2025 17:40

Welcome @Peaceandquietandacuppa! For me, an out is something that I no longer need or use, but doesn’t include day-to-day stuff such as recycling or throwing packaging away after I’ve opened a parcel.

I tend to count things when I decide to get rid of them, as that is the hardest part for me. Other people count things as they leave the house.

No new outs for me, but I posted off the socks I sold on Vinted last week, and the six unneeded thermos mugs were collected today. This means the remaining four thermos mugs all fit on one shelf in a kitchen cupboard with space left over 😊

LivingInaBuiltSite · 14/03/2025 18:37

I’ve finished going through my paperwork, got rid of tonnes.
now have a small pile in my desk of current stuff, and a primark paper bag full of ‘sentimental shite to bin when I die’, will upgrade to a box when I find the right one and add shite as I find it - with the box being the limiting factor, like Dana’s container theory.

Jobs:

  1. Hang up framed pictures: this has now changed to critically go through the framed artwork as we’ve agreed we don’t actually want all of it?
  2. DS2 paperwork: blue badge started
  3. my British passport application - wait to hear then go to a citizenship ceremony
  4. DS1’s gaming, PC, nerf collections to go through and tidy
  5. Portfolio work - waiting for more to be marked, more to do, always; 9 bits ready to sign off
  6. buy a nice clock for kitchen as have decided where it will go

Not quite outs yet:
scooter hooks x 3 onto FB
see if anyone wants a mostly working prelit Christmas tree
one game to list on FB
3 x lots of fabrics to give away to a neighbour tomorrow DONE ✔️

Out:
another approx 15 for paperwork out
3 sections of fabric out
448+15+3=466
