Used up a cleanser today. Also found a school library book in dds bookshelf so took that back at pick up.

CheesePlantFeet · 06/06/2025 18:40

Our weekly meal planning and big asda shop went to pot this week because a situation blew up at DHs work. We decided to lean into it and eat up some randomness from the big freezer. I won't count that as decluttering, but I could! But I did identify 6 tupperwear pots of mystery food which I will count 😊

Also out: unused curl cream sold on vinted

I'm seriously having to declutter but the stuff I have is decent but not needed. I know it needs to go but this is my dilemma as I'd really like people to have it for nothing.

  1. Do I take it to a charity shop for them to sell? My preferred charity doesn't have accessible parking.
  1. Do I take to the council recycling centre where they have a shop called Tip Treasures and the money they make goes to fund the project? However I don't want it going in the council's pockets.
  1. Advertise on Facebook/Freecycle and get flaky people making enquiries?
  1. Advertise and put stuff in my garden for people to just take? I'm near a primary school so get regular footfall but weather dependent.
  1. I do occasionally volunteer with an Asylum and Refugee charity and have given them household items but the stuff I have is like Compare the market meerkats and ornaments and well just stuff and I don't think they would want it.
  1. I want a quick fix and it's not about making money so I can't be bothered with Vinted and Ebay or car boot sales.

Can someone make the decision for me and give me a virtual kick up the arse please.

Purely in the interests of helping with a decision…..

If you have a mixture of stuff including some collectibles, I think Oxfam is your best bet. They have a really good system and will auction or sell online for things not just through their local shop.

If you want to maximise your declutter, put everything in the car right now and go!

If you want it gone I’d charity shop some of it.

A sunny day and putting it in the garden sounds easiest there if you know you get a lot of passers-by.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 07/06/2025 11:19

Some charities will collect too, worth looking into, British heart foundation springs to mind.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 07/06/2025 11:24

I need to get back on this thread, I want new carpets in the house and the thought of having to move all the stuff to do it is totally overwhelming. Sons bedroom and living room and office are the big offenders but there is clutter everywhere.

CherryRipe1 · 07/06/2025 12:15

Sadly found 2 broken Lladro Pierrots that were my late mils. The lutes have broken off despite careful wrapping. They're fixable but don't think the charity shops want repaired stuff do they? Will restock Wall-mart as everything I put out has gone & these are cute but not my style. Another slightly dated lamp base on wall & empty perfume bottles recycled. Got a bag of absolute tat to sort through today. Old SIM cards, usbs, hairbrushes, empty boxes and pots, post its. I know there will be something in there that needs keeping but psyching myself up to do it and instead of cracking on am posting on here (procrastinating)

Acheyelbows · 07/06/2025 15:00

Been missing for a while, as back to work and between that and the outdoor maintenance jobs, decluttering has taken a back seat. Two cleaners were booked, both were no shows unfortunately, will try again in the summer as no time to wait in and meet them now.

Recycling day for electrics on in our town today so managed to get rid of:

  • old dishwasher
  • old dryer
  • satellite boxes (5)
  • broken tv
  • garden blower
  • pressure washer
  • foot spa

While sorting I loaded up the car for a run to the civic centre and disposed of

  • three extra large stuffed toys
  • seat cushion
  • lawnmower
  • chain oil 3L
  • glass jars
  • curtains
  • wooden stool
  • wooden magazine holder
  • 4 wooden bats
Brought a lot of old paint cans and sprays as well but the centre couldn't take any more this week so it all had to come home again.

During the week I scrapped a car at the car dismantlers and now I know where it is, I will try and get a few more metal things out to them.

Got rid of one jumper that I loved to wear in Winter but it bobbled every time I wore it.
Threw out two old tennis rackets.
Recycled two cardboard boxes.

New bag of books ready for charity shop.

Two brown bins filled with green waste, mainly leaves and branches.

It felt like a lot of progress but when I look around I see so much more to do.

Anyone know who would take tree trunks away, they were left by the tree surgeon but I couldn't use a chainsaw, hoovering has me in pain for days whatever is wrong with me.

Cottagecheeseisnotcheese · 07/06/2025 15:14

@Acheyelbows put tree trunks on facebook as firewood with a note that they need to bring own chainsaw to cut them up

I'm team "leave it in the garden". We are between 2 schools and fairly busy road, so anything I put out gets collected quickly. I'd wait for a sunny day, box thing up and write "free" with your kids chalks on the road and also holler on local fb group. Anything leftover can go the charity shop

No kids and no chalk but a full to the brim craft room so I can make a fancy sign. I did bundles of lavender from the garden last year and that went in minutes. Just now need a dry day and a bucketful of motivation.

ThatRoseBiscuit · 07/06/2025 19:09

I brought a bag of clothes to the charity shop - they are able to recycle them. I dumped an old iron and have replaced it.

7 sets of Lego
Some curtains, tie backs and a lamp shade
train set

My May update: decluttered 90 items (though 50 of those were magazines so it sounds more impressive than it actually was), bringing my 2025 total to 226.

Haven’t done any decluttering in the past two weeks as we were on holiday during half term (our first family holiday in a few years - it was wonderful), then had the shock of coming home and going straight back to work and school. Have spent the week catching up with laundry. Was planning to spend this weekend restoring the house and hopefully getting on to more decluttering, but I had my Covid vaccine booster on Friday and have had a reaction to it, so I’ve been feeling ill and stayed in bed. Very frustrating!

Hey everyone I’m rarely on mumsnet but need to help an elderly relative start clearing oit a house for a couple of weeks over the summer. She is looking to give most of it away or sell a few things very cheaply. Please can you share the best ways to do this. I am overseas. She is in Cambridge. If anyone is local I would really appreciate advice about which facebook sites are the best (or whether I should try other places)
thanks

Hi @jandalsinsummer - is she clearing her own house or someone else’s? If it’s another persons house, it might be easier for her to go through and take anything she wants to keep/ sell, then get a house clearance company to take the rest. We did this with my mum’s house after she had died, and it was just much easier that to try to get rid of things ourselves.

JK3 · 08/06/2025 15:24

sold 8 large items on Vinted
gave away a book, 2 tops and some trainers

Old sky remote & broken slendertone control box out for electrical recycling. A couple of things listed on eBay today already got watchers so hopefully they go, if not then off to charity shop. Random hats, ornaments and clothes bagged for hospice shop. Tip booked for old junk.

EllieQ · 08/06/2025 21:31

DH dropped a bag of clothes off at a charity shop today. They’d already been counted, but now they’re out of the house!

It’s her stuff, I’m toying between hiring a skip and trying to do it logically but it sure is daunting!

Get her to sign up for MN. If she can use FB she can use MN. Then she can join this thread for motivation.

Outs:

Pair of boots that gave me a hurt heel somehow last time I wore them.
CD x 5 nobody likes.
DVD nobody watches.
Leaflet.
Empty box that's been hanging around ages.
Plant pot from a long-dead plant.
Saucepan and lid I can't remember the last time I used.
Skillet and ladel I'd forgotten I had either of them.
Rolling pin I never bother to get out of the back of the cupboard, grabbing whatever alcohol bottle is handy to use instead.
Ice cube tray that never got used the entire time I owned the freezer it came with.
Plastic wrap for sandwiches I used to use for work but no longer need.

Total is 3561
