Is anyone just starting to declutter? Or hasn't yet.

I know there's lots of decluttering threads but I'm just starting (again) but this time I mean business.
What's inspired you to declutter now? Mine is clearing out an elderly relative's home and realising I don't want dcs to ever have that much stuff to clear. Plus it's quite depressing having too much stuff.
Dh and I travel a lot,mainly uk, and you realise you need very little to get on in life.

I'm not going minimalist although can see the appeal.

Care to join? I won't be counting items but I will list as much as possible. I should really try and sell some stuff but cba.

@PeachPumpkin hi 👋

LushLemonTart · 23/04/2025 17:05

Been to the charity shop. Got rid of a bucket a rug a handbag, some boots and a jacket. Plus drinking glasses. The rug is like new but we don't need it. The bag is a burberry. It's a hospice charity shop so it's a good cause.

@LushLemonTart you've been productive!
My poor DP has been trying to sort his insurance out (from his stolen van), he's being passed from pillar to post, and he's frazzled.
So no further on with my room.
I've returned an Amazon parcel, added a few bits to the charity bag, packed my case for my trip today, put most of my laundry away, counted my empty coat hangers (a sense of accomplishment 😀).
I'm looking forward to getting home and getting going again, realistically it takes me 2/3 days to recover from staying away.

LushLemonTart · 24/04/2025 10:37

Hope your trip goes well @CherryogDog .

Hopefully I'll get more done today. The home where MIL is want my nail polishes that I don't use now. I only ever use a couple of colours if I can be bothered doing them. So they'll go tomorrow.

Going to the local hospice shop tomorrow.
Very much the tip of the iceberg.

@Rowgtfc72 wow that's a haul! Well done.

I got Less by Patrick Grant from the library last week. I need to read more of it. I had to wait ages for it. They won't let me extend it for long.

Morning all, well done on keeping up with the decluttering.

@CherryogDog i hope you get that flooring sorted soon.

I am officially in full panic mode. I move next week, am only 50% through the major declutter (new house is smaller than old) and have not packed a single thing ready for the move. Ahhhhhh...

Also, new house came with a free piano, which dosent work and is not worth retuning. So now I have to figure out how to dispose of that, again, Ahhhhhh....

. and breath!

Like @Jabtastic I've sadly had to clear a couple of elderly relatives homes over the past decade and absorbed many duplicates/triplicates of items into my house "that'll come in handy!" 😁 A recent health scare, and DS temporarily moving back home with his own piles of stuff, has made me realise that we need to reinvigorate our own declutter (and file our financial paperwork clearly) so our DC aren't left with a mountain of crap to sort through after we pop off (hopefully not for a long while yet). The responsibility of sorting my relatives cluttered homes definitely affected my health at a time I was grieving. Although it felt surreal that a loved ones long and well lived life can be reduced down to a boxfile of paperwork and a few nickknacks 😪

I tidied the shed last night (47 old plastic flowerpots anyone?) and today I'm starting on the garage with chucking the old paint pots from 3 houses ago! Then going through paperwork as I have the day off. DS is back on sunday so can help me with runs to the tip with a roast lunch as payment!

Onwards and upwards!

LushLemonTart · 25/04/2025 10:31

Good luck everyone.
Work for me today then out tonight. Back at it tomorrow.

@Dogpawsandcatwhiskers it was clearing out my mother in laws flat when she went into a care home that made me realise we have to much stuff.
Granted her flat was ridiculous, stuff piled high floor to ceiling.
Mines just more well hidden.

Bags dropped off at Hospice shop. I can start the next round of sorting now.

CherryogDog · 26/04/2025 20:39

@Hoolahoophop I hope so too!

I'm looking forward to getting back on it!
When I was trying to pack my case it felt like I was attempting parcour, climbing over things to get stuff.

CherryogDog · 30/04/2025 16:58

Hi everyone, how's the decluttering going?
I'm absolutely exhausted from my weekend away, keep nodding off when I sit down.
Today I blitzed the dog room, and cleaned the kitchen floor, it was minging 🤑
Then started to wash my walls ready for painting, but the dust just kept smearing so I had a mini melt down.
I've given them a good hoovering and hopefully will start painting tomorrow.

LushLemonTart · 30/04/2025 19:19

We went away for a night. Had a long walk today that was hilly. Had a massive nap when we got back.
Back to decluttering tomorrow.

I found some cute baby pictures...that was a bit distracting!

CherryogDog · 01/05/2025 14:46

@LushLemonTart hope you had a nice time!
@Hoolahoophop aww baby pics, I think photos will be my last job.

I have got my first coat of paint on 🙆💪😍

LushLemonTart · 02/05/2025 00:42

Well done @CherryogDog
Baby pics are a fab distraction @Hoolahoophop .
I've had gdcs today and out at the local pubs tonight.

Back at it tomorrow....honest!

2 big bags gone to charity.

I'm a bit hungover but will be back to it when home. Visiting family atm.

CherryogDog · 03/05/2025 08:33

@LushLemonTart hope your hangover clears quickly!
I've got a very low alcohol tolerance and very rarely drink because of hangovers.

I've got my 2nd coat of paint on, both white trying to cover the grubby magnolia before I paint the light green I've chosen.

Decluttering my bedroom is still stalled until I've got the space/storage completed.
I've got a desk in the corner and it's covered in a stack of books which need sorting through. We have an Oxfam book store nearby so hopefully they'll take a load.
Have a lovely weekend everyone.

LushLemonTart · 03/05/2025 10:00

Good luck @CherryogDog . Hope you shift and sort the books. I find it hard parting with books.

OP posts:
Dogpawsandcatwhiskers · 03/05/2025 12:30

I struggle with letting go of books too unless I really didn't like a story and so won't reread it. Trouble is if I drop off to Oxfam I have to make myself not bring more books home!

Books and plants are my Achilles heel!

LushLemonTart · 03/05/2025 13:01

@Dogpawsandcatwhiskers a lot of mine are non fiction.

Have you considered switching to kindle? I’ve found it fantastic for reducing books around the house (very limited space).
