… From recipes, techniques, tips & tricks.

I have searched MumsNet and there isn’t really an ongoing positive/appreciative thread sharing the joys and tribulations of having an Aga.

My first experience of an Aga was accidental when the holiday accommodation we booked a few years ago had an Aga. As we’d taken our own food I had to crack on. I used it for warming up pre-cooked food in one of the ovens and I did a few things on the simmering & boiling plates including the famed Aga toast. We all loved the soft warmth it brought to the kitchen and to be honest for as big as they are we thought it look homely and inviting. We were hooked! From what I could gather it heated the water in the cottage too.

They have many uses and I’m interested in what other people appreciate their Aga for, their favourite recipes and any hints and tips you can share.

PS - Im not trying to be insensitive in the current energy pricing crisis and I understand that not everyone will see the merit of this thread ❤️

PPS - Photo isn’t my Aga x

@ExquisiteDecorations great tip about the cork under the hot plate lid! Thank you.

@MadameSchnauzer mines an eR 110i so I rarely use the hot plates, use induction daily and ovens as and when needed. Suits us to a T. I bet your beast looks awesome in orange … are you comfortable sharing a photo 😍

Hi @cathyandclaire @nannyl & @ExitPursuedByABare I thinks an Aga corner is very much needed on Mumsnet!

What are people’s favourite/easy yet tasty recipes they cook in their Aga’s. Currently I’m loving a shredded chicken salad and I do the chicken in a cast iron lidded casserole dish in the simmering oven. When cooked it’s shreds so easily! Also I find tray bakes very easy such as veg and chicken portions into the roasting oven for an hour (turning half way through).

This is it when it was installed, kitchens a lot messier now though Smile

What a wonderful colour, don't see many tangerine agas. Love the units with it too.

TheRealHousewife · 03/01/2025 17:40

@nannyl Fantastic idea! I’m definitely going to be doing that on my busier days!

@MadameSchnauzer Fabulous utterly fabulous colour 😍. Lovely pooches and kitties too! What’s the one in the background? Greyhound?

@TheRealHousewife the bony legs in the background belong to our Pointer...she's a swine but will outlive us all just to spite meGrin

MadameSchnauzer · 03/01/2025 17:47

@TheRealHousewife I love yours,I nearly chose that colour myself but was overridden by dh Hmm

TheRealHousewife · 03/01/2025 18:35

@MadameSchnauzer Pointers are lovely … do you work them?

I was lucky in that we both agreed on linen. One of the kitchen companies who quoted us tried to convince us to go with black. I’m pleased we didn’t take their advice.

@TheRealHousewife no she's thick as mince so probably for the best Grin

CleanHouseGoals · 04/01/2025 08:13

Aga was oil fed until we had a leak. Then converted to the AIMS electrical setup.
After that my wife found Elektri Kit so we had that fitted. That gave is independent on off control of each plate and each oven. Halved the electrical usage in one day.

TheRealHousewife · 04/01/2025 15:47

@MadameSchnauzer Bless her 😅

@CleanHouseGoals You're like me! The best of both worlds. Relatively economical to run as well as being easy on the eye 😍

How did everyone's aga/everhot perform over the Christmas holidays?

I treated myself to a Stellar jug that I intend to use for gravy and sauces but have only used so far for warming milk for our hot chocolate.

MadameSchnauzer · 16/01/2025 14:03

We didn't have many here this Christmas (only the usual 6 of us) but as usual the Everhot worked like a charm, we will be having a delayed Christmas lunch sometime in the next few weeks for about 15 of us so fingers crossed it doesn't fail me then.

ExquisiteDecorations · 16/01/2025 14:26

We've got one f those Stellar sauce pots, it gets used all the time, gravy, porridge, white sauce, anytime all the other pans are in use / in the dishwasher.

The EH did well at Christmas, due to a family emergency I was away overnight Xmas Eve, arrived home at 10.30, started cooking about 12, dinner on the table by 2.30 (we had a boned rolled turkey breast joint not the whole bird), it was a breeze. So much easier than with our old gas oven. This was our 4th Everhot Christmas. We don't cook for crowds as our house is tiny.

Hedgesgalore · 31/01/2025 10:42

Its Six Nations weekend, we do food from the country that we are playing against so today my aga will be doing Hairy bikers cassoulet for our tea tonight.

Slow cooked in the SO then adding in the sausages with salt & pepper baguette 🥰😎

What is everyone else planning for their evening meal?

MadameSchnauzer · 31/01/2025 14:20

@Hedgesgalore that sounds amazing, make sure to post some pictures later Smile
Friday nights are our takeaway nights, so my meagre offering from the Everhot will be fresh meringue made this morning to be turned into Eton mess for pudding later this evening.

ExquisiteDecorations · 31/01/2025 18:41

I’m on my own at the moment (DD at the gym, DH not expected back from a trip away till at least 11) so am mulling over the options and probably about to nip out to the supermarket. I did offer to fetch fish and chips but DD said she’d had chips at lunchtime. We don’t follow the rugby so I didn’t know it was a 6 Nations weekend (I’m a football nut instead) but I like the idea of the themed meals.

ExquisiteDecorations · 31/01/2025 18:43

The Everhot has done good work this week though, with a slow cooked chilli a few nights ago (using braising steak), a full English all cooked on a baking tray, pasta bake last night. It is great when people are in and out as things can be left in the low oven or if that’s too hot on top of the hotplate lid with the insulated cloth covers over the lid.

mazylou · 31/01/2025 22:04

Double cooked Chinese pork belly, steamed pak Choi here. I'm going to make a massive batch of the pork for the freezer, it was SO good.

Hedgesgalore · 02/02/2025 19:59

Sorry @MadameSchnauzer only came back to this tonight so no pictures but made so much that we had it as leftovers.

JC03745 · 02/02/2025 23:59

Blake and Bull have gone bust! Did anyone else know?

MadameSchnauzer · 03/02/2025 07:32

@JC03745 yes I heard about B&B a few days ago, feel so sorry for the ones that put deposits down and won't receive their orders 😢

AGA people, please help. Nothing browns! I have an inherited oil fired 1980s 2 oven AGA with my new (old) house. I am placing the tray right at the top of the roasting oven but barely a hint of golden, let alone brown. Everything takes twice as long to cook as I'm used to.

I have had the AGA serviced, the vermiculite changed, am leaving the temperature on 5. Grey meat, pale blond roast potatoes after nearly 2 hours.

Any tips for me? So very sad right now because I love cooking.

MadameSchnauzer · 11/02/2025 07:23

I believe the floor of the roasting oven is the hottest, someone else will be along shortly to give better and more in depth advice I'm sure though, good luck
