How often do you wash your family duvets?

And do you have a large capacity washing machine?

Thanks

DH and I have summer and winter duvets so I take them to the dry cleaners when I change them with the seasons.
However, I have only now realised that I have never washed DC's duvets (though the covers are changed regularly) Blush

Allshallbewell2021 · 13/04/2024 16:17

I've got new single duvets for the kids so my washing machine seems to manage those on the 'duvet' setting.

I'm trying to wash things more often and move away from being a lazy slattern 😬

Never, I change the duvet covers and I’d replace them if they were minging but they are still pristine white after about 4 years.

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 13/04/2024 17:11

Never . Although looking at them they are minging 😒.
I might buy some more new ones , but duvet covers and pillows get changed regularly

Mindymomo · 13/04/2024 17:16

I used to get our Super King Duvet dry cleaned every year, but it’s now cheaper to buy a new one in the sales, although when new it could have fitted in my 11kg washing machine, it won’t now. I wash my sons single duvets beginning of spring and late summer

Tommalot · 13/04/2024 17:34

I hand/barefoot wash them in the shower/bath then leave them in the garden to drip dry on hot sunny day by hanging them over a clothes horse.

Probably seen as hugely old fashioned here but I try to avoid getting anything dry cleaned if I can help it

PostHummus · 13/04/2024 17:38

Ours fit in our washing machine - both the single and double ones.

I can't temper the size of our washing machine, slightly bigger than usual, but not massive I think. But what helps is that both of our duvets are actually 2 separate 4 tog and 9 tog duvets that connect to one another to give flexibility all year round.

PostHummus · 13/04/2024 17:38

Oh, I probably washing them once or twice per year.

BogRollBOGOF · 13/04/2024 17:43

We don't do duvets.

(Swing your pants 😂)

I'll sometimes air the duvets over the washing line on a nice day, but that's about it.

BeyondMyWits · 13/04/2024 17:52

I've never washed a duvet in my life. They have covers that get washed weekly. They get aired every other week over the washing line in the summer, over the bannister in the winter.

Kalevala · 13/04/2024 17:55

When we switch them over. I don't wash my winter one as it doesn't fit. 7kg machine.

Aquamarine1029 · 13/04/2024 17:57

I wash the covers/switch out once a week due to my husband's allergies. It seems to help. I air out the duvet itself every week, and the summer weight one I wash at home. The winter one I send out because it's so big.

Allshallbewell2021 · 13/04/2024 17:57

The variety of approach here is frankly fascinating

When we switch over from summer to winter

Winter duvet currently drying on day 2 on the line....

BobnLen · 13/04/2024 17:58

I wash the summer 4.5 tog one at the end of the summer ready for the next year. I don't wash the winter one as it is too big.

Kalevala · 13/04/2024 17:59

I'd only wash a child's duvet if they were sick on it or wet the bed. Previous answer of when we change them over (so each duvet once a year except my winter one) is since DS was about 14.

Cookerhood · 13/04/2024 17:59

We wash ours when we change them in summer & winter. The summer king size ones fit in the machine, the winter ones don't so they go to the dry cleaners.

Ihearyousingingdownthewire · 13/04/2024 18:00

I change the bedding twice a week and wash the duvets every two weeks. Towels are daily and curtains every three months.

Whatineed · 13/04/2024 18:01

I wash all of ours in the machine every two months. I have really light synthetic ones from Zara home and they wash and dry beautifully.

I have a single from M&S which I've had for 43 years (it was my first ever duvet as a kid, labelled as a continental quilt!), I use it for guests, or when someone needs a day on the sofa, so I wash it a few times a year, and keep it in a plastic vacuum sack, it's like new!

JingsMahBucket · 13/04/2024 18:02

Funny you should ask this. We’re going away for a bit this month and I’m planning to drop off our big duvets to a local laundromat for laundering. We haven’t washed them in forever because they don’t fit our machine. They need a good cleaning.

hobblingAway · 13/04/2024 18:03

When I change them over for the seasons.

I have a 1 tog, a 4 tog and a 7 tog and the 7 just about fits in my 8kg washing machine.

EwwSprouts · 13/04/2024 18:04

Towels are daily Just why?

Wash duvets once a year. Chuck them over the line just to air a few times too.

burnoutbabe · 13/04/2024 18:06

I asked how much it was to do at local dry cleaners which was £25 or so. I could get a new one for less than that.

So never is the answer. I am in a flat so no where to dry for several days.

Hedgerow2 · 13/04/2024 18:09

Don't wash them. Keep meaning to take them to a launderette but never get round to it. Might spot wash if any spillage. But they have a cover on which gets washed - just as our mattress covers and pillow cases get washed, but the mattresses and pillows themselves don't.

Certainly would never have them dry-cleaned - don't want to be inhaling chemicals in my sleep.
