And do you have a large capacity washing machine?

Thanks

Never. I like the goose down ones. It gets shaken and aired when I change the bed. I'll probably replace it this winter and pass it to a friend whose kids go through them.

EmmaOvary · 13/04/2024 23:05

We have to wash duvets now?!

My toddler’s one is washed if he wets the bed or pukes on it. Ours the same, otherwise not at all: They are pristine.

Dacadactyl · 13/04/2024 23:08

I've only ever washed duvets if I thought they smelt a little bit/were dirty e.g. if one of the kids had an accident when younger.

I would take them to launderette to fit in their big machines.

As the kids are now older, I've not washed any of our duvets in the past 5 years (although we have bought a couple of new duvets in that time)

Hedgerow2 · 13/04/2024 19:25

@caringcarer - what do you mean I have a lot of time on my hands?

Most people seem to wash their duvets a couple of times a year, some only once a year but you find time to wash it really often.

dudsville · 13/04/2024 23:11

We only have tog 3 duvets. In winter we just have brushed cotton bedding and that's all the addition that's needed to keep us warm. In summer I don't use a duvet but I wash ours 2 to 3 times a year.

maudelovesharold · 13/04/2024 23:15

Take ours to the launderette in town, maybe twice a year.

Paperthin · 13/04/2024 23:15

i have never washed a duvet.
i have never washed curtains !

😳

KeeeeeepDancing · 13/04/2024 23:16

FYI rather than the bin you can donate old pillows and duvets to dogs protection places. At least they get used to destruction before going into landfill.

ThisOldThang · 13/04/2024 23:18

I have two King Size feather duvets. One is 18+ years old. The other is around 15 years old.

Last year i noticed that they'd both got a bit smelly and washed them, for the first time ever, in our standard sized washing machine at 60°C.

It took a couple of attempts because the machine didn't add enough water. I ended up pouring an additional 15+ litres of water into the tray using a jug and funnel. The water went an absolutely disgusting colour, but they came out smelling nicely.

If i do it again, i think I'll fully soak them in the bath before transferring them to the machine. I think that might help them fit into the machine.

Copperoliverbear · 13/04/2024 23:20

If I had a washable duvet 2 a year at the laundrette in a big machine, kids fit in machine at home.
I now have a wool duvet so has to be dry cleaned or aired on the line. X

I change the bedding twice a week and wash the duvets every two weeks. Towels are daily and curtains every three months.

Blimey that's a huge amount of washing. You must have a very clean house, and a water bill and electricity bill to match!

marshmallowfinder · 14/04/2024 06:20

Never. Way too expensive to do at launderette, don't fit in my machine. Wash cover every 2 weeks, sheet and pillowcase weekly. They get aired at season changeover. I buy new every 5 years or so. They are not dirty or smelly in any way. They are absolutely fine. I fully air the bedrooms every day with windows open too.

Are you serious?!!'

Of course I’m not serious. I was taking the piss out of the Mumsnetters who post vomit face emojis to anyone who doesn’t scrub and bleach their loo after every single use, who don’t change out of ‘outdoor clothes’ into ‘indoor clothes’ in the driveway, who don’t change their bedding after every sleep and who apparently stand drip drying after a shower descaling the taps.

No you can't. Most don't want them and won't accept them as they are too big to be stored, but most importantly cannot be washed. They are then charged to dispose of their waste. The odd place might, but they are useless to most rescue centres.

Jeezitneverends · 14/04/2024 08:19

Usually when I change the duvets from summer to winter and vice versa…I’ve a large capacity machine so they just fit in (king size)

DecayedStrumpet · 14/04/2024 08:29

Never washed a duvet in my life... though all of ours are foam not feather.

Preachingtotheconverted · 14/04/2024 08:42

New duvet every 6 months (summer and winter). A local lady takes the old duvets and makes them into dog beds for a dog rescue charity.

TheDogsMother · 14/04/2024 08:52

Every 6 months or so I take them to the launderette armed with a big bag of £1 coins and wash/tumble them. Duvet covers/bedding washed once a week.

We have an annexe we let out on Airbnb. That duvet has a duvet protector then the duvet cover. Those duvet covers/pillowslips/sheets go away to a professional laundry for a very hot wash and press.

Waitingfordoggo · 14/04/2024 08:55

I wash ours when we swap between winter/summer duvet. It’s a super king but fits in my machine (11kg). I don’t remember washing the kids’ duvets recently. I would if they asked but they are older teens and I leave it up to them to make decisions about what needs washing and when!

Elebag · 14/04/2024 08:59

Never. They don't fit in the machine and we don't have a launderette in our town. The dc's have had a new duvet every few years (sickness, bigger beds). I still think mine is new and it's 15yrs old.....

I do air them in the garden every so often though.

NetZeroZealot · 14/04/2024 09:14

Never washed my curtains either. I did take a pair to the drycleaners once but was charged £90 so I decided the rest were clean enough.

All you duvet-washing obsessives, you do use duvet covers as well, right?

What do you think their purpose is?

Whattodowithit88 · 14/04/2024 09:17

Never, don’t air them either, never knew it was a thing. Don’t worry, decades later and I’m still alive. Rather pleased with the hours over the last 40 years that’s saved me now 😎

icelollycraving · 14/04/2024 09:17

Our duvets don’t fit in my washing machine. Dry cleaning is expensive so I just replace them.

I use duvet covers, but I also wash each duvet once a year. I don’t think that’s excessive.

Duvet covers are for covering duvets, but they are made of cotton so if someone spills some tea or has a sweaty night (illness/perimeno) the duvet can get dirty when the liquid soaks through the duvet cover and onto the duvet itself.
