New Year, Fresh Start with Flylady

Are you looking to finally getting into a new routine with housework? Something simple to start that can be easy to add to over time? Flylady may be the answer for you!

This is a long running thread, but we are a friendly bunch and all are welcome to join in.

Do NOT sign up for the Flylady emails - it's an excessive amount sent every day.

There are Baby Steps for starting out, add one thing at a time to start good habits and routines.

There are 5 zones that we will rotate through, don't worry about finishing it all this month, it'll come around again next month! Flylady is NOT about perfectionism!

Daily missions: each day of the week has a different mission.

  • Monday: Home Blessing (or as we call it, home bleugh)
  • Tuesday: plan & play
  • Wednesday: anti-procrastination
  • Thursday: errand day
  • Friday: clean car & purse out. It's also date night (with your significant other, or friends, or yourself!)
  • Saturday: family fun day
  • Sunday: renew your spirit

Common acronyms we use:

  • LOL: load of laundry (washing is certainly NOT funny!)
  • DW: dishwasher, we are not rotating wives by any means, although an extra pair of hands could come in handy sometimes 😆
  • LMS: lose/lost my shit
  • DNLMS: did not lose my shit

There are more, feel free to ask us to explain something. I'll try to update links every day, although if you can, it's worth downloading the app, you can even have it send you notifications (although I only have it for when the zones change). You can also modify the tick lists to suit your home & lifestyle.

Links are below 👇 if I happen to not add links in time, they do update at midnight for you. I am in the US, 7 hours behind the UK, so I'll do my best.

Hi all. Don't worry about working out who I am, because i last posted a couple of threads ago.
I can't get onto the site on my phone. Is it down or would it be better on a different device? I have been a flybaby so long that i know the routine anyway really. Weekly home bleugh sounds less twee so I'll use it. I just need the motivation to stick to it! Can someone remind me which room we are in please?
I'm missing her daily pondering so I'm relying on you all! Her ponderings are all recycled now anyway. I recognise nearly all of them but they are still worth a read. I can never be bothered to watch videos though.
Does anybody use a control journal? 16 years in and i never did do that! Maybe this is the year that I do it 🤔

HazelNotHungryLC · 01/01/2024 17:00

Bells we are in the entryway/front porch. I looked on the site last night and we are only in this zone for 2 days, not the whole week.
On the app she still does her daily pondering, or morning musing as she calls it on the app. I really do recommend it!
The zones link should work, although I can't seem to get the flight plan link to do anything, my apologies.

Bells I use a control journal I didn't buy it from FlyLady though I made it myself. I like her musings too. I'm on an Android phone and use the mobile site for MN

Welcome to the thread User

Cat I'm trying to start as I mean to go on too

Ta-da's:

Painted my nails

SquirrelSoShiny · 01/01/2024 17:17

Good timing! Marking place!

HazelNotHungryLC · 01/01/2024 17:19

character no DW would kill me! I've had one for so long and this sink I have now in the house is awful (only one sink, not a double one, too deep, which makes it too low), but works for a handful of handwash dishes.

searching I'm planning to paint my toenails and fingernails today too. I got a new set for Christmas and want to try it out.

shannara delegating the college discussion is a good idea and should help with your stress levels.

home I would also get rid of the decor, I agree with Ditzy - he's probably forgotten he bought them for you! If you aren't ready to part with any clutter and you still like it/ love it/ gives you joy (whatever works for you), then keep it!

Scourgify last year I got caught up on all my laundry on new years day. My mum told me not to because I was "washing away the good luck" I carried on anyway. This year I'm not doing any laundry until tomorrow, since we had that house fire. I'm not taking any chances! 😂

Welcome @userxx! I like how flylady gives direction on where to declutter/ clean, especially when you don't know where to start. It sounds like you've made good progress though already!

Cat I agree, getting out of routine, working on Christmas etc does throw me off. Hopefully it won't take much to get back into a good routine.

OP posts:
Searchingforsnow · 01/01/2024 21:00

Tada
🩱15 mins in entrance hall / landing , I didn't think I had much decluttering to do in this area but I now realise I do 😂 some bookends and a lampshade in the charity pile and half a bag of rubbish ! I want to go through the drawers on the landing which is home to all our sheets and bedding and there's also a basket of odd socks that needs dealing with ! Hopefully I'll get the drawers sorted tomorrow.
🩱 yummy roast dinner and mil came for dinner
🩱 kitchen tidied
🩱 toenails painted
🩱 some craft bits organised
🩱 read with dd2 , showered and painted her toenails
🩱 dd2 in bed at an earlier time , tired from staying up last night and also to get back into a routine for back to school on Thursday !

TheMainCharacter · 01/01/2024 21:12

Coming on with my tadas as had a successful morning

strip and remake my bed
fresh covers onto spare bed
lol x 3
clean loo and sink x 3
clean bath and shower
vacuum throughout
clean out hamsters
collect all bins to go out (actually taking them out is teenagers’ job)
sort food cupboards
lol x 2 away
washing up x 4 loads 😭 really need a working dishwasher

actually doesn’t look much written down but I felt quite productive

ettiespaghetti · 01/01/2024 21:26

Hi! Can I join ?
I did flylady years ago and some of her sayings still live in my head !
I've done precisely nothing today - been sofa bound with new year hangover the entire day !

Makingtheextradaycount · 01/01/2024 21:29

Hi can I join please? I did Flylady badly some years ago but some it has stuck. Can’t start properly until Wednesday as we have guests staying tomorrow but will lurk until then

ItsieDitzyBitsOfOnionInTheSoup · 01/01/2024 21:33

Ettie of course you can join

That was loads Character

Are you new as well Squirrel? I can't remember. We have a new thread every month

Ta-da's:

🎄 Watched a film

In my defense I was much more productive yesterday

JMAngel1 · 01/01/2024 21:42

Ta da

Hoovered and mopped downstairs floors
Wiped down all surfaces in kitchen/dining/sitting room.
Cleaned downstairs toilet and sink
Put way 3 LOL
Ran 1 LOL
emptied and reloaded dishwasher twice - had big roast dinner and just find when everyone home, the dish volume is crazy!
Tidied master bedroom and en-suite - needed to clean really but ran out of steam!
Didn’t drink alcohol - this is a big one as have had a couple of glasses of wine practically every night since 23rd Dec - enough! Hoping Dry January will give me more energy and make me more Fly Ladyish!

HazelNotHungryLC · 01/01/2024 21:45

Of course you can join! @ettiespaghetti & @Makingtheextradaycount! The more the merrier! Welcome to the thread @SquirrelSoShiny 👋

Ta Das so far:
🥳 infuser filled with cucumber, lemon & strawberries (yum!)
🥳 rotated DW
🥳 wiped countertops down
🥳 toenails & fingernails in progress of being painted
🥳 video chat with mum

It's almost 3pm here, I haven't done any zone work yet, and probably won't until tomorrow. I'm enjoying relaxing today!

OP posts:
HazelNotHungryLC · 01/01/2024 21:49

@JMAngel1 I'm also doing dry January. In 2023 it seems I had more days of drinking than not, shamefully. I'm looking forward to not drinking anything alcoholic. I joined the dry January thread too. You have accomplished a lot today too!

OP posts:
MistyWitch · 01/01/2024 21:50

I've never even heard of FlyLady. My New Year's resolution is to get better at housekeeping so think this may be a good place to start. If you don't mind me joining and likely asking a million questions that is.

Scourgify · 01/01/2024 22:01

Tidied in the kitchen. Fridges and freezers as tidy as poss without becoming a breatharian. I've reduced the stack of six melon boxes below the kitchen window to one, by putting the contents where they belong. Sadly, I cannot bring myself to dispose of the boxes quite yet. My folks had an entire area of their attic for useful boxes, and I'm going the same way.

Swept up leaves in back garden and generally tidied for about half an hour. Froze home-made soup.

Will have a go at the hallway tomorrow. It's one big hotspot atm. All the decorations are laid out for boxing up neatly so that it's easier next year. And the front door and step if the weather's not too awful.

Took myself by surprise when I chucked tomorrow's LoL down the stairs after tea instead of having to hunt it out of the bedrooms in the morning.

HazelNotHungryLC · 01/01/2024 22:50

@MistyWitch welcome 👋 feel free to ask any questions, one of us will answer at least!

Scourgify I would always keep boxes too, mainly for wrapping gifts, so I understand the drive to keep a good box. However, over the last couple of years the only boxes I'll keep now are small (very small) boxes as the bigger boxes are easy to replace, especially when ordering from Amazon. I think the key is, do you have somewhere to store them where they are out of the way while not being used?

So I got done with my nails, oh man, I love the new stuff I got! It dries super quick and seems to be as hard as gel, although only time will tell (no light needed). I'm off to Amazon to see what other colours there are (but wait to order any because I'm not buying anything like that this month)!

SingToTheSky · 01/01/2024 23:19

Welcome everyone!

I have been astoundingly lazy today, I was up early when DD1 got home and then had an epic nap.

ta da
✅read a couple of chapters of a novel
✅went through work calendar and emails etc to start filling in 2024 diary (yes I know I should have done this earlier! 😳🤣)
✅edited tesco order

ItsieDitzyBitsOfOnionInTheSoup · 01/01/2024 23:20

Hi Extra we're very loosely FlyLady and lots of slacking goes on so don't worry! 😁

Misty this thread was what introduced me to the system. It's been good for me. Ask away! There's always someone around

Good luck with dry January Angel and Hazel

Oh gosh Hazel I've not even seen your nails but I already want whatever it is you've got! I looooove nail polish but I have about 50 already so I need to use them up first... which means I can have new nail polish in about 25yrs then sigh 😔

Scourgify I tackled my "useful boxes" last year, they weren't. I rarely needed one and they took up so much space. I feel freer having disposed of them although it was a wrench at the time, especially the pretty ones

I'm not a big drinker but I just realized I haven't had any all Christmas/New Year which I'm chuffed with considering all the family drama that's gone on.
No new year sales splurges for me. Need. To. Stop. Buying. Pointless. Things. Yesterday I went round finding things to fill up the bin for tomorrow, because there was an unusual amount of space left and I didn't want to waste it. Today I discovered it's not being emptied until next week 🤦
Decorations still up, they'll come down on 6th January.
New Year Resolutions - daily exercise.

Ta-da's:

🎄Tidied living room
🎄Been for a long drive to get out of the house

To-do:

🌲Exercise
🌲Evening routine

HazelNotHungryLC · 01/01/2024 23:40

Ditzy the brand is Dazzle Dry. It's a 4- step set. I got the mini set for Christmas (was on my wish list) I've added about 15 more colours to my wish list since applying this one! I'm a bad influence, I know. I'm not sorry 😂

OP posts:
ItsieDitzyBitsOfOnionInTheSoup · 01/01/2024 23:42

😆 Hazel

DomesticElf · 02/01/2024 02:04

Hazel ohh Dazzle Dry... I will look it up! Sounds very glam.

I am loving the renewed spirit on here with all the Ta Das.

My ta das from 1st:
🧹 properly hoovered downstairs including entrance hallway and kitchen backdoor
🧹2 LOLs washed, dried, folded and put away
🧹Floors mopped kitchen, piano room, utility room, and hallway

🧹Bleached windowsills in kids bedroom and all surfaces antibac-ed
🧹Tidied playroom
🧹Cleaned up and regained control of the kitchen after NY celebration cooking

Felt a bit like a hamster in a wheel with all the housework and making sure kids are aired, read to and played with.
Also this year I am going to try harder to work on my marriage to see if it's improvable. If 1st of Jan is anything to go by, it will require some effort.

HazelNotHungryLC · 02/01/2024 04:19

Tuesday is plan & play day.
Tuesday's mission is a multi room mission:
Set your timer for 15 minutes and put out the fires in your front porch, entryway and dining room. Clear your hot spots of things that have been set down, put them where they belong.
Hmmm, I just looked on the app and it shows it is the entire week, not just a couple of days like the website states that we will be in zone 1 🤦‍♀️ I'll just take it one day at a time!

Elf I'm sorry to hear about marriage struggles. Is your DH feeling the same?

I have actually just completed my day 1 of not drinking! I was planning on having a glass of wine, but decided to stick to my infused water instead! I did have a few more carbs than I should have, but nothing like the past couple of weeks.
It's almost 9:30pm here, we're almost home from ILs. DS has school tomorrow morning, it didn't dawn on me as I have no work 🤦‍♀️
I'll take a shower tonight and get to bed, I'm going to work on going to bed earlier this year.

Chouxpastryishard · 02/01/2024 04:34

How do I join if I don’t sign up for emails though? My house is a cluttered mess so I really need help. Just not coping on the housework front at all.
