How long would you expect a £70 pure Iinen fitted sheet to last?

I treated myself to a set of pure linen bed sheets for a big Birthday 6 years ago. Holes appeared in the flat sheet by about 2 years of on/off use. I complained to the manufacturer who told me it was my fault for laundering in Persil (optical brighteners) not Ecover and gave me a voucher for a half price replacement. Eventually bought a replacement with voucher and a bottle of Ecover. Next, I confusingly found my feet in a hole in the duvet cover. Contacted the company who offered 30% discount on replacement. Nah, that's throwing good money after bad. Now I find the second sheet is holey. So that's my adventure in linen over, £400 and 6 years later. I expected they would outlive me, like the striped flanelette sheets my Nana bought in the 1950s that still have for emergencies. Maybe I'll switch to them. The bottle of Ecover has lasted longer 🤣

To be honest I wouldn’t expect anymore than 6 years.

I have linen bedding (not as expensive admittedly) of a couple of years old that I only wash on 30 and air dry, but already it’s a lot thinner and faded. I think I maybe have 2 years max left out of it.

Well I wouldn't expect anything I sleep on and rub my feet over to last nowhere near 6 years 😳

Why the need to sleep in linen bed sheets? They seem a lot of hype to me.

Cheap sheets have always outlived expensive for me. We got the loveliest set as a present, washed exactly by the instructions and they were worn out within two years. Ones we’ve bought in penny’s are still going strong 15 years later!!!

Agree, it's plastic that lasts a long time. Linen is luxury not durable. Although I have some high thread count cotton bedding that's still good after 10+ years.

I've had my linen sheets for about 5 years and they are showing no sign of wear at all.

I’ve had my linen for three years, and it’s still good as the day I bought it. I’m just about to invest in a second set Infact. I bought from Piglet in Bed and it was definitely an investment. I’d definitely expect a good deal longer than you’ve had from yours.

I’ve never managed to wear a hole in any sheet. Even my ex with his fiendish, talon-like big toenails never managed it and he wore through socks in weeks.

How are you washing and drying them?

I've got ancient John lewis cotton still going strong after 15yrs. Duvet cover is 25yrs old.

I’ve still got some St Michael vintage M+S bedding from my parents’ from the 70s which is still going very strong. 6 years sounds a bit crap.

I’m very particular to specific cotton types, usually made in Portugal.
Modern cotton especially if from India has changed significantly in the last 20 yrs.
Despite me saying this and paying $$, dh’s heels rubs holes over time :(.
I do get 10+ yrs out of pillow cases and flat sheets.

All of my bedding is linen, some of it is 15+ years old, it gets washed in whatever detergent is going at 60 and often tumble dried on hot. It's all in perfect condition and actually feels better over time as it's supposed to.

I think you've just been unlucky with a bad brand OP.

You don't treat a table cloth the same way as you do a sheet though!!!

but that isn’t slept on nightly with people moving around on it, in contact with body oils, washed as frequently etc.

I've not had fully linen sheets but the set with linen in got holes in after about 4 years of near continual use. I haven't bought linen as I love linen trousers and go through them so quickly I always think of it as really fragile. I buy a high thread count cotton now and they seem to last really well

Really good quality linen sheets that last for ages are eye wateringly expensive and a total pig to iron.

Well..... I don't know about modern linen, but I still have some Italian linen sheets on the go, which were my mother's, with applique and openwork. Still going after 50 odd years, with no special washing for most of that time!

Antique linen is a big thing in Italy.

I would have assumed 5-7 years but had exactly the same experience as you, having used a company often promoted on here by MNHQ. Never tumble dried, washed it in Fairy yada yada yada, but holes after c.18 months.

I tried Secret Linen and think it’s much better quality - I’m 2 years in with two sets that are washed and used interchangeably and it’s still in great nick. What company did you use?

I dunno, I've had Aldi Egyptian cotton bedding for at least 7/8 years and it's going strong. I have had more expensive and thinking about it I rotate the 3 Aldi sets. I would think linen should be as durable?
